Studies that have been conducted to determine how best to make this transformation have not offered a comprehensive methodology or model that has proven useful. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between the practices of military leadership teams and organizational innovation in historic and highly successful military commands, specifically in the World War II Pacific theater of operations, to gain insights into how current and future leadership may influence innovation. The research examined historical documents, leader accounts, and scholarly literature on innovation. Through this case study, insights were gained into how current and future leadership may influence the transformation into innovative organizations through their practices. -

Tokarev hroughout history, despite the influence of Alfred Thayer Mahan’s concepts, continental European and Asian navies have had a simple choice to make: Teither to create a balanced fleet to engage another balanced fleet at sea and defeat it in one or more “decisive battles” or to take an “asymmetrical approach,” creat- ing an “unbalanced” navy, able to prevent the enemy from achieving sea control and to keep one’s own vital sea lines of communication (SLOCs), if one has any, untouched by the enemy’s naval forces. In the case of Russia, the era of a blue-water, balanced navy ended with defeat in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–1905. Russia did not lose the capability to build capital ships, nor did the context for their employment evaporate. -

These tiny Pacific islands were the focus of a brutal struggle between the Japanese Imperial Navy and the U.S. Pacific Fleet. The U.S. victory here ended Japan's seemingly unstoppable advance across the Pacific and began a U.S. offensive that would end 3 years later at the doorstep of the home islands. This lesson plan is based on the National Historic Landmark file "World War II Facilities at Midway" and historic accounts of the campaign. The lesson can be used in U.S. history, social studies, and geography courses in units about World War II. -

Bernard W Peterson Oral History Monologue BERNARD W. PETERSON: After I came back from the hangar deck that leads outside, 20 millimeter guns were on the starboard side, just after the superstructure. One the guns had sustained light damages from a direct hit on the bomb of a diving bow and the bomb when the plane exploded just above our superstructure. And the debris had sprinkled down everybody -- just rained down from a higher altitude than normal, and I was able to take a position and we shot down a couple of Vals that they credited us to. The assistant gunnery officer of the Enterprise, his name was Elias Mott, M-O-T-T. Very fine man, and I was in fairly close contact with until the end of his life. And he died several years ago, probably 1988 was (inaudible) contact. (inaudible) we were fairly close, because I met his formerly Torpedo Six -- former commander [Glen Massey?] who became Torpedo Three. Mott and Massey had been at Annapolis graduating classmates, and so there was, he had quite an association with our Torpedo Three, and later interrogated all of us that participated from the Sixth Squadron, the Sixth Company, when they were making up their post-battle assessment of just how many planes attacked, and just how many planes were shot down, and so forth. So 1 it was quite an air action, of course. And probably about 39 Jap dive bombers actually attacked the Enterprise. And we were officially credited with 15, and the supporting ships, mainly the North Carolina, which was the only one in service out there, got credited with some of the cruisers, others got partial credits. -

We Are Still One Fleet: U.S. Navy Relations with the British, Canadian, and Australian Navies, 1945–1953 DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Corbin Williamson Graduate Program in History The Ohio State University 2015 Dissertation Committee: Dr. John Guilmartin, Advisor Dr. Peter Mansoor Dr. Robert McMahon Dr. John Hattendorf Copyright by Corbin Williamson 2015 Abstract In the aftermath of World War II, the U.S. Navy broke with its traditional avoidance of peacetime alliances by building close ties with the British, Canadian, and Australian navies. This fundamental shift in American naval policy occurred between 1945 and 1953. Drawing upon their close connections with the U.S. Navy during the war, the British and Canadians in particular built a web of connections within the U.S. consisting of naval representatives in Washington as well as liaison and exchange officers. Beginning in late 1946 the British, Canadian, and American militaries agreed to standardize their procedures, doctrine, and equipment. However, the failed efforts to create a common sonobuoy showed that standardization of concepts would occur before standardization of weapon calibers. To that end the three navies wrote common communications and tactical publications that by 1952 allowed their ships to operate together on short notice. These publications were written by the Canada-United Kingdom-United States (CANUKUS) Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Working Group, a hitherto little known organization that worked to standardize ASW doctrine and equipment between the three fleets. In addition, the British and American anti-submarine training schools, in Ireland and Key West respectively, began hosting visits by ASW ships and aircrafts from each other’s fleet beginning in 1947. -

The Wildcat, he wrote, was “pitifully inferior in climb, maneuverability and speed”. Fortunately for the US Navy, the carrier fighter it needed to defeat the more nimble Zero-sen made its first flight just 22 days later at the Grumman factory in Bethpage, Long Island. The F6F Hellcat, as it became known, was considered to be the finest carrier fighter of World War II. Superior in speed, rate of climb and maneuverability to the F4F Wildcat, ruggedly built and with a powerful engine and heavy armament, the Hellcat wrested air superiority from the vaunted Zero-sen within a few months of entering combat towards the end of 1943, establishing an ascendancy over its Japanese rival that it retained until the end of the war in the Pacific. The duels between the Hellcat and the Zero-sen during 1943–44 represented a remarkable reversal of fortune. The Mitsubishi fighter had dominated the skies over Asia and the Pacific during the first year of combat that followed the attack on Pearl Harbor, outperforming most Allied fighters and meeting its match only when Allied pilots adopted tactics that negated the Zero-sen’s superior maneuverability. -
