WELCOME Dear Camarada Friends, 25 years….I am taking a pause to let that sink in and feel the tidal wave of gratitude for our musical community in San Diego—thank you with all of my heart. It has been my pleasure and an amazing journey to bring stellar chamber music experiences to all of you. It seems I have always been a creator of experiences in some fashion. My parents set the example of connecting people and hosting events for me from an early age—and I grew up fostering a passion for building community through music. In high school I organized all of my girlfriends into a choral octet. I picked the music, rehearsed them, accompanied them on piano and found “gigs” for our performances. The truth is my inspiration to form this ensemble in the beginning was purely to get out of band rehearsal! I couldn’t bear the slow pace or the conductor! In the end, we had a blast—some performances better than others—and it cemented our lifelong friendships. As I look forward to Camarada’s 25th season, I am in awe of the incredible line-up of musicians and composers. As I have mentioned before, Co-Artistic Director Dana Burnett and I dream up these concerts by starting with one piece of music or a theme—and then follow the thread and continue to shape the programs until they feel just right. Dana and I both love this process—it is where the magic begins. Our goal is to create experiences that offer an oasis in your busy world, connection to your community and a continuing celebration and education of culture from around the world. Our 25th Anniversary Season is more exciting than ever! All season long we will celebrate with special events, new programming and guest artists. Stay tuned! In deep gratitude, Beth Beth Ross Buckley Powering the transition to 4K video over-the-air and 5G Look for Dolby AC-4, HDR and Internet integration in your next TV receiver Camarada was established 25 years ago in 1994 when Beth had a chance encounter with the great composer Arnold Schoenberg’s grandson, Randall, who invited Beth and her husband, Dave, to a very special concert featuring the music and art of Schoenberg the following evening. This synchronistic meeting and subsequent concert launched Camarada! Beth was so inspired that evening in Vienna, she set out to create a chamber group that would have its own mission, unique culture and fill music aficionados’ hearts with joy. Mary Barranger and Ann Chase joined Beth in founding Camarada in 1994, beginning with several performances of Pierrot Lunaire by Arnold Schoenberg. Camarada has grown from a few concerts a year to a thriving non-profit with five unique concert series and 10–20 outreach concerts a year featuring our talented local and visiting world renown guest artists. CAMARADA RELIES ON YOU—OUR KEY DONORS & PATRONS—IN ORDER TO FULFILL OUR MISSION. Ticket and program sales only cover half of our annual expenses. CAMARADA’s intimate performances and unique community of audience, artists and music are only made possible by donations, sponsorships and grants. Hybridity and Identity in the Pan-American Jazz Piano Tradition by William D. Heller, PhD Hybridity and Identity in the Pan-American Jazz Piano Tradition William D. Scott, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2019 The term Latin jazz has often been employed by record labels, critics, and musicians alike to denote idioms ranging from Afro-Cuban music, to Brazilian samba and bossa nova, and more broadly to Latin American fusions with jazz. While many of these genres have coexisted under the Latin jazz heading in one manifestation or another, Panamanian pianist Danilo Pérez uses the expression “Pan-American jazz” to account for both the Afro-Cuban jazz tradition and non-Cuban Latin American fusions with jazz. Throughout this dissertation, I unpack the notion of Pan-American jazz from a variety of theoretical perspectives including Latinx identity discourse, transcription and musical analysis, and hybridity theory.

Meter is the hierarchical framework against which the listener relates melodic complexes on the musical surface, and this metric foundation is key to the listener’s understanding of the musical fabric as a whole. While many theorists have discussed the relationship between musical surface and metric structure in Classical- and Romantic-era music, the rhythmic and structural underpinning of twentieth- century repertoires has received far less attention. In the tonal music of the Common Practice period, meter was relatively stable, but metric structure became increasingly complex in the twentieth century, with repertoires that avoid regularity across musical parameters.
