Meter is the hierarchical framework against which the listener relates melodic complexes on the musical surface, and this metric foundation is key to the listener’s understanding of the musical fabric as a whole. While many theorists have discussed the relationship between musical surface and metric structure in Classical- and Romantic-era music, the rhythmic and structural underpinning of twentieth- century repertoires has received far less attention. In the tonal music of the Common Practice period, meter was relatively stable, but metric structure became increasingly complex in the twentieth century, with repertoires that avoid regularity across musical parameters.

He rejoins the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, where his sensational season-opening concerts wowed the British and German press two years ago, for a coupling of Bartók and Beethoven followed by a special “talk and performance” event, at which he and piano soloist Inon Barnatan join German TV personality Malte Arkona (Oct 20–22). With the same orchestra he conducts a program pairing Mahler with the German premiere of Anders Hillborg’s Second Violin Concerto (Oct 27 & 28). Thus world premieres of new Philharmonic commissions rub shoulders with iconic masterworks and an adventurous opera performance; artistic residencies continue to forge and nurture meaningful musical partnerships; innovative programming explores the ways music can foster global community and positive change; and the conductor and orchestra once again take their vision overseas on their seventh and final European tour together. Meanwhile, as a perennially popular guest of the world’s foremost ensembles, Gilbert returns to the podiums of the Berlin Philharmonic, Munich Philharmonic, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Orchestra of the Lucerne Festival Academy, and Rome’s Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, besides making his staged operatic debut at La Scala.

Doctoral Dissertations. 613. https://opencommons.uconn.edu/dissertations/613 A Wind Ensemble Transcription of Part 1 (the First Movement) of Harmonielehre by John Adams with Commentary Richard Edward Wyman, DMA University of Connecticut, 2014 John Adams, perhaps the most prominent American composer of the last twenty-five years (and reported to be the most frequently performed living composer), has created important repertoire for almost every major musical medium except the Wind Ensemble or Band. Published transcriptions exist of two shorter orchestral works, Lollapalooza (1995, six minutes long), transcribed by John Spinazzola, and Short Ride in a Fast Machine (1986, four minutes long), transcribed by Lawrence Odom, and both of these have become important works in the repertoire. By presenting a transcription of the seventeen-minute long first movement of Adams’s large-scale symphonic work Harmonielehre (1984-1985), this project presents the possibility for wind ensemble performers and their audiences to experience John Adams’s music on a larger scale. Also included is contextual commentary of value to conductors, performers, and scholars of John Adams; this discusses the historical background and the analysis of music relating to Minimalism, post-minimalism, John Adams, and Harmonielehre.

So too were the marching bands in which he played clarinet as a young student. Learning the basic European DU canon in front of the family Magnavox, Adams readily O assimilated it alongside the crazy quilt of American vernacular R music he encountered in the early postwar decades. Duke Ellington is a recurrent inspiration, and Adams’s love of jazz— which returns in unexpected forms, such as the improvisatory NT I “hypermelody” of the Violin Concerto (1993) or the electric violin’s raga-like musings in The Dharma at Big Sur (2003)— was early nurtured by his parents’ activities in jazz groups. As a student at Harvard during the cataclysmic upheavals of the late Sixties, Adams experienced the cognitive dissonance of the arid pronouncements of contemporary serialists when confronted with the fresh, Dionysian inventiveness of this golden age of rock.
