Please reserve your seat. Professor Peter Schwerdtfeger, MEng (Aalen) MSc PhD (Stuttgart) Habil (Marburg) FRSNZ FNZIC "Everything is relative," says Albert Einstein, and we chemists are learning it the hard way! Albert Einstein is well known as a physicist, so why should chemists be interested in his work? The famous Einstein formula E=mc2 lead to the unification of two fundamental laws, the law of mass conservation in chemistry (A. Lavoisier and M.W. Lomonossow, 1789) and the even older law of energy conservation in physics (G.W.Leibniz, 1676). Einstein must have known about this for sure. But what he did not know, and not even P.A.M. Dirac. who unified quantum theory with special relativity, would have guessed it, is that valence electrons of the heavy elements in the Periodic Table are strongly influenced by relativistic effects, changing substantially their underlying chemistry and physics. Only very recently have we learned that the rather unusual chemistry of gold, when compared to its lighter congener copper or silver, is due to relativistic effects. Hence Albert Einstein can now be celebrated by chemists as well. Bill Evans and Oscar Peterson. He sometimes dashes off zingy right-hand splashes that flow into pretty runs and rivulets of intricate notes; this skilled player doesn't eschew playfulness. Mike Wofford has performed with Shelly Manne, Lee Konitz (music director for Sarah Vaughan), Harry “Sweets” Edison, Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis, and Zoot Sims (pianist and music director for Ella Fitzgerald until her retirement in 1992), Kenny Burrell, Benny Golson, Art Farmer, Charlie Haden, Slide Hampton, Clifford Jordan, and Ray Brown, among many others. He is one of the most outstanding jazz pianists of our time. As a special feature the concert will include a tribute to the music of Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Jobim.
