A Glimpse of history

Vytautas Magnus University’s origins are closely linked to the interwar and the moods of freedom and the cultural renaissance that prevailed at the time. The university’s inception coincided with the birth of Lithuanian Statehood. Having declared the country’s political independence on February 16th in 1918, the key f igures of Lithuanian enlightenment considered it a high priority task to establish a Lithuanian university. Four years later, after the reorganization of the Program of Higher Education, the University of Lithuania was opened in Kaunas. During the interwar period, it remained the only Lithuanian school of The Soviet government closed Vytautas Magnus University down in higher education. VMU joins the project Campus Europae and becomes a member of the Baltic Sea Region University Network (BSRUN). 2008 – The Baltic Graduate School for Social Sciences and Humanities is founded by the consortium of Tallinn University, University of and Vytautas Magnus University. 2009 – Vytautas Magnus University celebrates the 20th anniversary since its reestablishment. 2010 – The 90th anniversary since the founding of the Program of Higher Education in Kaunas. 2011 – Vytautas Magnus University marks the Czesław Miłosz year, commemorating 100th anniversary since the poet’s birth and organizing a number of celebratory events. 2012 – The university marks the 90th anniversary since its establishment. Since the establishment of the university in 1922, 66 distinguished people have been awarded the Honorary Doctor’s degrees. Honorary titles have been granted to the Presidents, Signatories of the Independence Act, poets and writers, scientists and other individuals who have greatly contributed to the history of Lithuania and the university.
