Reference points are used to index hotel properties in Worldspan. All reference points are classified as one of the types listed here. Each reference point is also given a reference point name and a reference point code. Reference point codes can be city codes, airport codes, or special codes for specific locations or attractions.

A reference point is mandatory to display a hotel list, hotel availability or even hotel detail. If a reference point is not specified in availability or detail displays, Worldspan defaults to the city code used in the initial list entry.

City and airport codes are three-character codes. Locations or attractions are four to six characters . Let’s talk a little bit about city and airport codes.

The hotel list display includes the reference point name that the system decoded using YYZ. CA is the country code for Canada, and is preceded by C to indicate it is a country code.

Cities and airports are obviously the most common reference point types used in hotel list entries.

The hotel list entry can also be made using the distance and direction option. The entry HL3/DD-2 accesses a hotel list of properties within two miles of the temple.

Let’s talk a little about the codes in this reference point list. The three-character code SKG in this list is a city code for Thessaloniki (Thessalonica in American English). The rest are four to six- character reference point codes for attractions, universities and other reference point types.

Reference point codes are used to display area lists and hotel lists. Let’s look at HELP HRP for entries using reference point codes.

You can probably see this isn’t a bad way to look up city codes, either. And instead of searching through an entire list of reference points starting with F, we’ve narrowed it down by requesting reference points starting with FLO. We could also use an entire reference point name.

So in addition to all the sights of Florence, within 100 kilometers, or 62 miles of Florence, day trips can be made to the towns of Siena, Pisa, Bologna and Rimini. These options do not always work with smaller cities, but are helpful for large tourist destinations where the reference points have been indexed well and distance and direction has been calculated.
