One of the most important Chilean illustrators of the 20th century. In the 70s his permanent collaboration with Disney began, and he is considered worldwide to be the main artist of the Donald Duck series. Carl Barks (1901-2000), the creator of Duckburg, said on meeting Vicar, "What a pleasure to meet the artist who draws Donald better than I do."
Among many collaborations, in 2007 he participated in a book in homage to Uderzo, the creator of Asterix, on his 80th birthday. Vicar created a fascinating adventure in which Donald travels to the age of the Gauls in a time machine built by Gyro Gearloose.

A celebrated 19th century French painter, who was lucky enough to be successful in his lifetime.
At the age of eight he was enrolled in the Municipal Art School of Lille. At the beginning of his career he seems to have been very influenced by Courbet.
In 1855 the family moved to Paris, where Durand met the critic Zacharie Astruch, who introduced him to Courbet and Manet, with whom he became great friends.
He began a very successful career. In 1861 he participated in the Salon, in 1861 he won the Wicar prize, and used the winnings to install himself in Italy, a decisive move as there he saw Velazquez´ portrait of “Pope Innocent X” which started off his veneration for the painter. In the 1866 Salon he won a medal, which meant that he could travel to Spain, where he stayed for three years. The self portait on show at the Prado comes from this period.
In 1870 he was decorated with the Legion of Honour, and in 1874 Carolus-Duran was at the apex of his success, exhibiting some forty paintings at the “Cercle des Mirlitons” which was a great social occasion.
He received a commission from the State for the Musée du Luxembourg, which is currently kept at the Louvre.
He continued to receive oficial recognition and devoted himself to female portraiture.
In 1889, alongside Meissonier and Puvis de Chavannes he founded the Societé Nationale des Beaux Arts, which, like the Salon, was very liberal, did not award prizes and allowed all artists to exhibit.
In 1904 he became a member of the Academie des Beaux Arts and became Director of the Academy of France in Rome, occupying this position until 1913.
One of his most beautiful paintings "Lady with the glove" is kept at the Musée d’Orsay

Imposing mercury gilt bronze table clock. France. Charles X period, from around 1830.
“Oedipus Rex.”
The magnificent engraving on the sculpture of the expressions on the characters, the greyhounds, the clothing and the marvellously detailed foot of the king is outstanding. It rests on a base which is decorated on the front with two winged Furies flanking a harp and at the sides with two laurel wreaths. It rests on four animal claws. It has two silver faces, one of them marked Lagaillarde Madrid, a dealer and supplier of French works of art who did a lot of work for the Spanish court. In the collection of clocks at the Royal Palace there is a clock with a similar case, but just one face and more simple. Impressive chimes mechanism, and in perfect working order.
