It gives you an insight into the strong net- work between research institutions, universities and research companies and it portrays the core competencies in our region: amongst them aero- space, road and rail technology, optical and metrological technologies, microproduction, communication technology as well as the use of re- newable raw materials. Being the centre of the most research intensive region in Europe and an international research location puts Braunschweig into an excellent position. Not only EU statistics underline this outstanding position, but it is also confi rmed again and again by studies and ranking tables. We primarily owe these advantageous conditions to the large number of scientifi c institutions which are linked together in the ForschungRegion Braun schweig e.V. (Research Region Braunschweig e. V.). Furthermore, our Dr. Gert Hoffmann city is the heart of the most important industrial region of Lower Saxony: Mayor of Braunschweig more than 500 high tech companies are based in this region and provide an innovation potential which is second to none. Amongst them are glob- al companies such as Volkswagen, Intel or Siemens that are cooperating closely with local research institutions. Braunschweig was named Germany‘s “City of Science 2007”, a title Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr. h. c. Jürgen Hesselbach which has contributed lastingly to Braunschweig becoming even more Chairman of ForschungRegion distinguished as a research location and which gave an important im- Braunschweig e. Land price diffusion across borders – The case of Germany Aaron Grau, Martin Odening, and Matthias Ritter Land market regulations are often justified by the assumption that activities of foreign and non- agricultural investors drive up prices in domestic land markets. However, empirical knowledge about the dynamics of agricultural land prices across borders is sparse. Using the German reunification as a natural experiment, we study the effect of the former inner German border on the dynamics of agricultural land prices in East and West Germany. We apply a land price diffusion model with an error correction specification to analyze spatial agricultural land markets. A novel feature of our model is its ability to distinguish price diffusion within states and across state borders. We provide evidence for a persistent border effect given that the fraction of spatially integrated counties is larger within states than across the former border. Moreover, we observe non-significant error correction terms for many counties along the former border.

In order to obtain this overview, I (1.) briefly introduce the University of Helmstedt in its specificity, focusing on the chairs of mathematics. (2.) I consider in detail who the professors were who held the chairs of mathematics, what their education, scientific activity, publications and teaching were, and who the scholars were with whom they collaborated. Finally, (3.) I provide an outline of the academic network of Helmstedt mathematicians. This case study is part of a wider project on the mathematical research and teaching in early modern German universities and on the (national and international) networks of mathematicians (or scholars of disciplines related to mathematics, like cosmology, physics and natural philosophy).
