Netball Northern Zone Newsletter February 2016 Message from Julie Paterson Inside this issue The 2016 year has got off to a very busy start for the all of us at the Northern 1 Message from CEO Zone. The SKYCITY Mystics season starts on 1 April, and the team have had 2 Community Netball two pre-season games already. The NZ based pre-season event starts on 18 3 Coach Development March at The Trusts Arena, with the formal ANZ Championship season launch 4 Performance being held prior to that. The SKYCITY Mystics season launch is on 10 March as well. 5 Mystics Update In addition to this the BEKO National League launches this month, and the team has been selected and is well underway with training. A formal announcement of the Northern Zone team competing in this league will be made once all members have been approved by Netball NZ. We have also been working hard to support some centres with governance and structural changes as well as spending time working through the regional netball facility strategy. Its also AGM season and we have ensured that a representative from the Zone attends all AGM’s, as well as preparing for our own! While it is a busy time it has been great to see so many positive AGM’s and so many positive and committed people continuing to work hard for their sport. The first SKYCITY Mystics game is on 1 April, so if you haven’t already bought your membership, please do so— and remember Centres get a great rate for corporate hospitality if you wish to host your sponsors or special guests at games.

It has been another satisfying year with progress being shown in all aspects of the work we are involved in, from ANZ FutureFerns through to high performance (SKYCITY Mystics) . Netball New Zealand and the five Zones continued to refine our organization’s role and purpose through- out the year. We all have a very high commitment to alignment with the national Whole of Netball plan and linking closely with Netball NZ’s strategies. Targets were set by Netball New Zealand in consultation with each of the zones and focused largely on increasing player participation as well as coach and umpire numbers. We were successful in some areas, but also recognized that targets in some other areas were not realistic, so were able to review these number for the 2016 season. The CEO’s of the Zone and Netball New Zealand continue to have regular meetings as do the Community and Performance team nationally. National Chair meetings are also held twice per annum, usually alongside the CEO meeting. It was a good outcome for the Coach Development role to transition from Netball New Zealand into the Zones earlier this year. We now have very clear lines of accountability for outcomes in this area and we were fortunate to be able to secure Tania Heap with such a wealth of experience in coach development.

March Newsletter March 2015 Message from Julie Paterson, CEO Inside This Issue 1 Message from CEO Hi everyone - another month has flown by and we are already a quarter of the way through 2015! The last two weeks have been particularly busy in our 2 Community Netball office with two home games within seven days. Our first game was well 3 Coach Development attended, and while the second game was never going to be a large crowd - clashing with the last day of the World Cup Cricket final – I was pleasantly 4 Umpire Development surprised at how many did turn up. They all brought their voices and were a very vocal and supportive crowd. It was great to see another win on home 5 Performance ground and we managed to keep the Steel to well under 60 goals, which was 6 Mystics Update a first for them for some time. 7 Upcoming Events The turn-out for the Zone AGM was disappointing, and as we were given late notice of non-attendance, we were unable to field a quorum of the nine centres required, meaning the AGM will have to be scheduled again. We have decided to hold it prior to a home game on 3 May 2015 and official notification of this will be provided this week. We will provide two tickets to the game to delegates who attend the AGM. It was also proposed we amend the constitution to allow attendance by phone or skype to ensure we don’t encounter this unfortunate situation again. Thanks to all of those who did travel long distances and also to those due to poor weather conditions had to sit in traffic for hours - and we are all sorry we couldn’t complete the meeting.

  • November Newsletter
November Newsletter November 2014 Message from Julie Paterson, CEO The Northern Zone has been consulted with at a number of levels Inside This Issue regarding the Whole of Netball Plan (WONP) with Netball New Zealand. It was great to see numerous centres attend the consultation evening held 1 Message from CEO some weeks ago and further refinement has happened through the CEO 2 Community Netball national group meeting as well as the Community Netball and Performance Netball national meetings. The finished product will be released at the NNZ 3 Umpire Development Council Meeting in February in Christchurch and I am sure you will all be as 4 Performance impressed as I have been with the clarity of strategy and prioritization as well as the really strong drive for alignment of the netball delivery system. 5 Mystics Update 6 Upcoming Events Following on from this the Netball Northern Zone Board have recently drafted an updated strategic plan. The initial strategy implemented in 2013 was a very useful starting document, and we achieved a large number of the goals and objectives. With the WONP underway and the priorities in the plan starting to take shape, it was timely to update the Zone strategy and ensure that our priorities and timeframes were aligned with Netball NZ. We will be discussing the high points of the strategy at the Zone AGM in March. It is also really pleasing to see the number of quality athletes being selected in to the Northern Zone training squad again this year – well done to you all. An exciting new programme is also underway for coach development and 13 coaches have been selected for the newly established Zone Performance Coach programme.

Netball Northern Zone Newsletter July 2016 Message from Julie Paterson Inside this issue Yesterday saw the final game of the ANZ Championship play out. It was fiercely 1 Message from CEO fought game, but of course disappointing that once again there was no NZ team 2 Community Netball playing. I have loved every minute of being involved in this Trans-Tasman 3 Coach Development competition but also recognise that it hasn’t achieved the targets initially set, 4 Umpiring especially around increasing broadcast numbers in NZ and new $$ from Australia. 5 Performance The new NZ elite competition has secured ANZ as the naming right sponsor 6 Mystics Update which is fantastic news for our sport, and our own SKYCITY Mystics sponsors are also very positive about the new competition. I am looking forward to seeing the New Zealand style of game-play be re-energised and am also very confident that the development structure that now sits under our Elite Competition will have a very positive impact on the depth and quality of players for our future. We are very excited to appoint Helene Wilson as our Head Coach for 2017. We have been fortunate to continue to have CAP programme support to allow Helene to take a full-time role in our zone. This will allow for strong continuity and connection with all of the programmes for coach and athlete development leading to the SKYCITY Mystics. Helene and I are working through player contracting now, and are required to have a team of 10 named by early September. We will keep you all posted! Best wishes to you all as you come towards the latter end of your season, I hope the wet weather hasn’t impacted too much ! Julie Paterson, CEO Netball Northern Zone July Newsletter 2016 Community Netball Manager It’s been a very wet and windy month of netball, both regionally and nationally.
