March Newsletter March 2015 Message from Julie Paterson, CEO Inside This Issue 1 Message from CEO Hi everyone - another month has flown by and we are already a quarter of the way through 2015! The last two weeks have been particularly busy in our 2 Community Netball office with two home games within seven days. Our first game was well 3 Coach Development attended, and while the second game was never going to be a large crowd - clashing with the last day of the World Cup Cricket final – I was pleasantly 4 Umpire Development surprised at how many did turn up. They all brought their voices and were a very vocal and supportive crowd. It was great to see another win on home 5 Performance ground and we managed to keep the Steel to well under 60 goals, which was 6 Mystics Update a first for them for some time. 7 Upcoming Events The turn-out for the Zone AGM was disappointing, and as we were given late notice of non-attendance, we were unable to field a quorum of the nine centres required, meaning the AGM will have to be scheduled again. We have decided to hold it prior to a home game on 3 May 2015 and official notification of this will be provided this week. We will provide two tickets to the game to delegates who attend the AGM. It was also proposed we amend the constitution to allow attendance by phone or skype to ensure we don’t encounter this unfortunate situation again. Thanks to all of those who did travel long distances and also to those due to poor weather conditions had to sit in traffic for hours - and we are all sorry we couldn’t complete the meeting. I hope you are all geared up for your netball seasons starting soon and I look forward to seeing you at the re-scheduled AGM - if not sooner. AND don’t forget to get along to a SKYCITY Mystics home game - there are only four remaining!! Julie Paterson CEO MARCH NEWSLETTER PAGE 2 Community Netball My first month as Community Netball Manager had been very exciting. In the first week I attended the NNZ council meeting where I was privileged to meet so many of you. Since Tia Winikerei and then I have visited a number of Centres. I have enjoyed meeting and listening to the stories Tania Heap joined us of challenge, enjoyment and growth that makes our game so special. I am still to make my this month at Netball way up to the Far North and one or two centres that are closer to my West Auckland base. Northern Zone In the next few weeks I will be looking for opportunities to come to you and your Centre. In the meantime please contact me with any queries or discussion you have to do with your community and Netball. Tia Winikerei Halberg Awards One of New Zealand’s longest serving umpires and administrators has been awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Halberg Awards in Auckland. Dawn Jones (OBE) has fostered a lifelong interest in Netball and has been involved at both national and international level for more than five decades. Dawn Jones was nominated for the Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of her service to Netball as one of the country’s top administrators and her involvement as a Netball umpire, one of the most Junior Netball Information decorated New Zealand has ever produced. courtside at Taster Days ANZ futureFERNS Pre-season Taster Days and Junior Workshops are underway. With most centres introducing the Year 3 & 4 programme for the first time, time certainly is precious with the additional workshops required for our netball communities. Papakura Netball Centre, Whangarei Netball Centre and the new satellite of Howick Pakuranga Netball Centre in the Maraetai/Beachlands area, “Coast Junior Netball”, have already enjoyed their workshops and Taster Days for the up and coming season. In embracing the ANZ futureFERNS program we share the following quote from page 4 “Changing the Game – The Parent’s Guide to Raising Happy, High-Performing Athletes and Giving Youth Sports Back to Our Kids” by John O’Sullivan Kim Beere Junior Development Officer Pohutukawa Netball Club and Michele Cadman ‘The innocence and joy of American youth sports has been corrupted. Rarely do kids just get President Pohutukawa Netball Club to “play” sports anymore. Instead, they get to “work” sports, a movement caused by the misguided notion that our kids need to specialize early and win at all costs to get that college scholarship and justify the investment made in youth athletics. The romance is gone, the fun is gone, and sports are no longer play. As a result, 70 percent of young athletes are dropping out of organized sports before they reach high school. Some children quit because of financial hardship, others because they acquire other interests, but many children quit because sports is no longer fun.’ Northland Centers are busy planning their competition structures for both Senior and Junior Competitions and it looks to be a cracking year for the North!! Junior workshops at Whangarei Netball Centre Whangarei Netball Centre have hosted a number of coaching modules over the past two months – these included modules for both junior netball and community coach award. We are encouraged by this and look forward to seeing these coaches progress through the coach development pathway. Counties What a busy Month it has been in the Counties Manukau area with Noeline Taurua-Barnett holding a Coaching Session at Papakura Netball Centre, and Y3-4 Students at the Taster Day for Sir Edmond various NNZ Coaching Modules presented locally. Hillary Junior School We have seen a significant increase in popularity with the ANZ futureFERNS program through school netball delivery and the Active in Schools Program. Recently at Redoubt North School we had a family “Have a go Day”. This generated a lot of interest and it was great to see parents participating in the skills sessions and having as much fun as the children. We had our first Taster Day of the year at Sir Edmond Hillary College- Junior School Y3-4 where the children who had participated in the 4 week skill sessions were given the opportunity to be involved in the 5v5 Modified game. This provided a wonderful opportunity for them to display the skills learnt being executed on court. Congratulations to Therese Dixon on receiving The Netball NZ Service Award at the recent NNZ Council/ AGM for your relentless support and countless hours dedicated to Umpiring throughout the years. Coach Development Y3-4 Students at the Taster Day for Sir Edmond I am very excited about my new role as the Netball Northern Coach Hillary Junior School Development Officer.
