Performance Coach 2018 ANZ Premiership Season Position Description Reports to: Netball Northern Zone High Location: Auckland Performance Manager Contract Fixed Term Part Time (Dec 2017 to August 2018) PURPOSE: The SKYCITY Mystics Performance Coach will primarily be responsible for assisting the SKYCITY Mystics Head Coach in preparing the team for the 2018 ANZ Premiership. The role will be for a period of approximately 8 months from the beginning of December 2017 until the conclusion of the ANZ Premiership, in late August 2018. RELATIONSHIPS: External Internal Committees/Groups HPSNZ providers Netball Northern Zone CEO Zone HP Advisory Group Media Netball Northern Zone High Zone Board Sponsors Performance Manager Northern Mystics Selection Panel Centre coaches SKYCITY Mystics Head Coach Northern Zone Elite Performance Northern Mystics Strength & Programme Advisory Panel Conditioning Coach SKYCITY Mystics Operations Manager SKYCITY Mystics Performance Analyst SKYCITY Mystics Physiotherapist SKYCITY Mystics Media Manager SKYCITY Mystics Squad & training partners Northern Zone Elite Performance Programme Leads Northern Zone Performance Coaches Northern Mystics Performance Coach KEY RESPONSIBILITIES While the SKYCITY Mystics Head Coach has overall responsibility for the selection, preparation, coaching and performance of the SKYCITY Mystics Team and Squad, the Performance Coach will be part of the SKYCITY Mystics coaching unit and be required to work with and support the SKYCITY Mystics Head Coach in the following areas: 1. To contribute to the planning and development of effective, creative programmes and training sessions that help to ensure the individual athletes in the SKYCITY Mystics Team and Squad are technically, physically and mentally prepared to perform at elite level. 2. To work with the SKYCITY Mystics Head Coach and Performance Analyst to utilise coding technology to accurately analyse and identify key opposition athletes, teams and strategies as well provide key data for the SKYCITY Mystics team and individual athletes. 3. To contribute to the development and implementation of astute game tactics and strategies necessary for the SKYCITY Mystics to be successful against each opposition. 4. To plan & implement appropriate training sessions as agreed with the SKYCITY Mystics Head Coach that target development of agreed skills and tactics. 5. To provide input into the selection of the starting seven and substitutions to enhance the on- court performance. 6. Assist the SKYCITY Mystics Head Coach in match debrief and athlete feedback processes. 7. Assist the SKYCITY Mystics Head coach and Netball Northern High-Performance Manager to conduct regular athlete reviews throughout and at the end of the competition season. 8. Monitor weekly athlete progressions in all training areas. In addition, the role of Performance Coach will include the following responsibilities: 9. To work with the SKYCITY Mystics Head Coach and Netball Northern Zone High Performance Manager to contribute to the development of HP plans, policies and protocols in the zone. 10. To work with SKYCITY Mystics Head Coach, Zone High Performance Manager and HPSNZ Coaching Team personnel to keep up to date with coaching developments, sports science research, teaching skills and techniques in netball and sport generally and to identify and plan a professional development training programme. The Performance Coach will report to the SKYCITY Mystics Head Coach on all operational and management matters including programme planning, trainings, athlete feedback, HPSNZ support personnel and administrative matters. The Performance Coach is ultimately accountable to the Netball Northern High-Performance Manager who is responsible for the development and implementation of the Zone High Performance Plan and programmes. The Performance Coach is expected to act in a professional manner and build relationships with umpiring personnel, media, sponsors, funders and other Netball Northern Zone and ANZ Premiership personnel. Experience, • Has coached at BEKO National League, New Zealand Championships, Coaching & Age Group Championships, or a NNZ national side for a minimum of 2 Specialist years. Knowledge • Demonstrates a very good level of understanding of the technical and tactical requirements of each playing position and area of court. • Assists with the selection of the starting line and substitutions for each game that are consistent with individual and team performances. • Assists with managing & developing athlete performances in competition and training by: o Creating an environment that supports athletes to remain confident and focused throughout the training and competition. o Assisting to provide activities and practices that enhance the athlete’s technical, tactical and decision-making development while also helping athletes to be able to adapt and change within the training and competition environment. o Assistance with developing & practicing game strategies to enhance strengths of own team and expose weaknesses in opposition teams. o Encourages athletes to set individual training and competition goals. • Encourages leadership in athletes and for them to have input into, and take ownership of their development and their performance. • Uses technology and appropriate data to improve performance. • Can provide recovery expertise to athletes. Planning & • Assistance to ensure training sessions are well structured, maximizing Organisation usage of time and resources available. • Assistance with the compilation of written athlete profiles for various stages of the programme. Competency Descriptors • Assistance with the integration all aspects of sports science into training programmes. • Has a process to review coaching protocols and implement improvements when required. • Completion and submission of reports to the Zone HP Manager as and when required. 4. Communication • Ability to communicate consistently, openly and honestly with athletes and team management within the team environment; and other key stakeholders. • Can give and receive constructive feedback to enhance performance of self and others. • Clearly articulate complex and technical ideas, strategies and tactics. • Encourages ‘buy-in’ from athletes. 5. Building • Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with, and is relationships, accessible to the SKYCITY Mystics Team Management & Support Brand / Profile Services, Netball Northern Zone Board, CEO & staff. • Assist with ensuring that athletes and management understand the importance of the athletes being considered role models. • Assist with ensuring the brand and profile of athletes, SKYCITY Mystics team and Northern Zone are portrayed positively in the media and publicly. • Is accessible to and acts in a professional manner when working with the Media. • Shares best practice coaching experiences with other Zone and Centre Coaches as appropriate or when required. • Establishes and maintains professional working relationships with umpires. .
