Assistant Coach 2013/14 ANZ Championship Season Position Assistant Coach 2013/14 ANZ Championship Season Position Description Reports to: Netball Northern Zone High Location: Must be based in Performance Manager Auckland Employee Name: Date: PURPOSE: The Northern Mystics Assistant Coach is a vital component of the Northern Mystics coaching team and is primarily be responsible for assisting the Northern Mystics Head Coach in preparing the team for the 2014 ANZ Championship. The role will be for a period of approximately 7 months from the beginning of December 2013 until the conclusion of the ANZ Championship, mid June 2014 (see Schedule A) RELATIONSHIPS: External Internal Committees/Groups HPSNZ providers Netball Northern Zone CEO Zone HP Advisory Group Media Netball Northern Zone High Zone Board Sponsors Performance Manager Northern Mystics Selection Centre coaches Northern Mystics Coach Panel Northern Mystics Skills Coach Northern Mystics Operations Manager Northern Mystics Performance Analyst Northern Mystics Physiotherapist Northern Mystics Media Manager Northern Mystics Squad & training partners Zone Rep coaches DIMENSIONS AND AUTHORITIES: Staff Reporting Paid Volunteer Expenditure - Budgeted Contractual Authority Northern Mystics Assistant Coach KEY RESPONSIBILITIES While the Northern Mystics Coach has overall responsibility for the selection, preparation, coaching and performance of the Northern Mystics Team and Squad, the Assistant Coach will be part of the Northern Mystics coaching unit and be required to work with and support the Northern Mystics Coach in the following areas: 1. To contribute to the planning and development of effective, creative programmes and training sessions that help to ensure the individual players in the Northern Mystics Team and Squad are technically, physically and mentally prepared to perform at elite level. 2. To work with the Northern Mystics Coach and Performance Analyst to utilise coding technology (Gamebreaker or Sportscode Elite) to accurately analyse and identify key opposition players, teams and strategies as well provide key data for the Northern Mystics team and individual players. 3. To contribute to the development and implementation of astute game tactics and strategies necessary for the Northern Mystics to be successful against each opposition. 4. To plan & implement appropriate training sessions as agreed with the Northern Mystics Coach that target development of agreed skills and tactics. 5. To provide input into the selection of the starting 7 and substitutions to enhance the on court performance 6. Assist the Northern Mystics coach in match debrief and player feedback processes 7. Assist the Northern Mystics coach and Netball Northern High Performance Manager to conduct regular player reviews throughout the season and also end of season player reviews. 8. Full overview and direction provided for players 11, 12, 13, 14 and the wider squad. 9. Monitor weekly player progressions in all training areas. In addition, the role of Assistant Coach will include the following responsibilities: 10. To work with the HPSNZ Support Services team to oversee the effective provision of support services for the Northern Mystics squad and training partners. 11. To work with the Northern Mystics Coach and Netball Northern Zone High Performance Manager to contribute to the development of HP plans, policies and protocols in the zone. 12. To work with Northern Mystics coach, Zone High Performance Manager and HPSNZ Coaching Team personnel to keep up to date with coaching developments, sports science research, teaching skills and techniques in netball and sport generally and to identify and plan a professional development training programme. The Assistant Coach will report to the Northern Mystics Coach on all operational and management matters including programme planning, trainings, player feedback, HPSNZ support personnel and administrative matters. The Assistant Coach is ultimately accountable to the Netball Northern High Performance Manager who is responsible for the development and implementation of the Zone High Performance Plan and programmes. The Assistant Coach is expected to act in a professional manner and build relationships with umpiring personnel, media, sponsors, funders and other Netball Northern Zone and ANZ Championship personnel. Leadership Can assist with the establishment of the team vision, values and performance culture & standards that align with the goals of the Netball Northern Zone HP plan as it is being developed Assists with ensuring the Northern Mystics squad maintains an appropriate standard of discipline off the court. Demonstrates interpersonal skills including: o Being approachable and available to players and team management. o Listens well, demonstrates empathy, is attentive to and understands the views of others. o Is open to feedback both positive and negative o Resolves interpersonal differences in a constructive manner. Is positive, confident & decisive under pressure o Maintains focus and control in pressure situations o Maintains relationships under pressure situations o Remains positive even after disappointments o Remains calm and confident with ability to make objective, quick and good decisions in pressure situations Demonstrates a commitment to professional development as a coach 2. Experience, Has coached at New Zealand Championships, Age Group Coaching & Championships, (minimum Under 21 level) or a NNZ national Specialist side for a minimum of 2 years. Knowledge Demonstrates a very good level of understanding of the technical and tactical requirements of each playing position and area of court. Assists with the selection of the starting line and substitutions for each game that are consistent with individual and team performances Assists with managing & developing player performances in competition and training by: o Creating an environment that supports players to remain confident and focused throughout the training and competition. Competency Descriptors o Assisting to provide activities and practices that enhance the player’s technical, tactical and decision making development while also helping players to be able to adapt and change within the training and competition environment. o Assistance with developing & practicing game strategies to enhance strengths of own team and expose weaknesses in opposition teams. o Encouraging players to set individual training and competition goals Encourages leadership in players and for them to have input into, and take ownership of their development and their performance Uses technology and appropriate data to improve performance Can provide recovery expertise to players. Competency Descriptors 3. Planning & Assistance to ensure training sessions are well structured, Organisation maximizing usage of time and resources available. Assistance with the compilation of written player profiles for various stages of the programme. Assistance with the integration all aspects of sports science into training programmes. Has a process to review coaching and implement improvements and changes when required. Completion and submission of reports to the Zone HP Manager as and when required. 4. Communication Ability to communicate consistently, openly and honestly in ‘one on one’ situations with players and team management within the team environment and also externally. Can give and receive constructive feedback to enhance performance of self and others. Ability to communicate clearly, complex or technical ideas, tactics and strategies and also ensure ‘buy in’ from players. Competency Descriptors 5. Building Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with, relationships, and is accessible to the Northern Mystics Team Management & Brand / Profile Support Services, Netball Northern Zone Board, CEO & staff. Assist with ensuring that players and management understand the importance of the players being considered role models, and that the brand and profile of the players, management, Northern Mystics team and Northern zone are portrayed positively in the media and publicly. Accessible to and acts in a professional manner when working with the Media. Shares best practice coaching experiences with other Zone and Centre Coaches as appropriate or when required. Establishes and maintains professional working relationships with umpires Schedule A Northern Mystics training schedule Northern Mystics team trainings are scheduled to start on December 2, 2013. Refer to training schedule. The Assistant Coach will also be expected to assist with small group skill sessions, however there is flexibility on the timing of these, and will be scheduled after consultation. The Assistant Coach will be required to facilitate 2-3 skills sessions per week and attend team training sessions which will be run by the Head Coach. Remuneration and/or reimbursement of expenses This will be a part time paid position. Remuneration will be discussed at the time of appointment Bona fide expenses incurred will be reimbursed (refer to the Northern Mystics Netball Policy for reimbursement of expenses) Professional development: The successful applicant may also (on request) receive professional development by way of provision of relevant courses/information sessions, as they relate to this position. Coach Appointment Criteria To be eligible for appointment as the Assistant Coach of an ANZ Championship team, Netball New Zealand & the NZ Netball Players’ Association must be satisfied

    Independent Director – TTNL Limited (known as the ANZ Championship) About the ANZ Championship The ANZ Championship was launched in 2008 as a successor to the Commonwealth Bank Trophy in Australia and the National Bank Cup in New Zealand.
