Email: [email protected] September NewsleƩer ANZ futureFERNS ANZ futureFERNS Netball Fesval Day Our inaugural Zone Fesval Day was kindly hosted by Netball Waitakere this year. The morning was fun and friendly for our young players and their families. It was fabulous having our very own famous local netball star Cat Latu from the SKYCITY Myscs hanging out with the players. The players got to play with Irene Van Dyk at one of the many acvity staons, play the new 4 v 4 or 5 v 5 games and graffi a message to the Silver Ferns on a banner. Many thanks to Cory Nicholls our new Zone rep for the NNZ Youth Advisory Group, who spent his day as Basil the squirrel for Mother Earth. Although it was a sell‐out (all 200 free registraons allocated) prior to the event, unfortunately not all 200 turned up on the day. Parcipants travelled from Dairy Flat to Takanini and all went home with happy memories, autographs from their netball stars and a bag full of goodies. Special menon to our local SKYCITY Myscs sponsors The Hits and VitaSport who supported the day. Thank you to Eleanor Simmons, Tabitha Winter and the wider community from Netball Waitakere who made this day so special for the children. We expect most people aending would be from their neighborhood and trust this event should raise the profile of their netball programmes and also of their wonderful facility. As quoted by one father “I’ve never been inside here before although I have driven past many mes, it is amazing!”. We now have our own Zone ANZ futureFERNS signage for other similar events. Please contact Sarah Brierly our Office Administrator for bookings to use the ANZ futureFERNS banner, 2 x A‐frames and 2 x tear drop flags. Dr. Craig Harrison – Director Athlete Development AUT Millennium We were privileged to have Craig present to us during the ANZ futureFERNS Workshop at the Zone Centre Forum. Craig is well qualified with a PhD 2014 and MPhEd 2006 specializing in Exercise Physiology and Exercise Science with his parcular interest in Youth Athlete Development. He is well respected in his field and has personal experience with Netball as the husband of Anna Harrison. Craig shared his professional research, findings and beliefs with us. He complimented the rule changes NNZ has introduced in the ANZ futureFERNS programme to date. His message included: player centered, fun, enabling self‐improvement, providing a compeve environment to play hard in smaller team sized games and to do to the best within a social context. “An athlete must first be immersed in the fundamentals to have any potenƟal to reach a high level of skill”. He commented that sport at the High Performance level was now all about entertainment and that unfortunately the commercialisaon of our game had brought in the ‘win at all costs’ approach at all levels. Craig encouraged us to believe in what we are doing. Investment in skills and competence which increases confidence in young players will benefit our children, more than a coach centered short term approach with a focus on winning. For more informaon and to receive his weekly blogs please go to www.autmillennium.org.nz 2015 Player parcipaon Survey As the second year of the new programme draws to a close, NNZ is keen to hear from the parents of the parcipants about their views.
