December Newsletter December Newsletter December 2014 Message from Julie Paterson, CEO Inside This Issue 1 Message from CEO It has been a very full year and I want to pass on my thanks to all of the centres who have worked alongside the Zone and have been positive, 2 Community Netball enthusiastic and open to ideas and discussions around how we can continue 3 Performance to increase participation numbers as well as focusing on quality programmes that will bring the best benefit to all who are involved in netball. The Zone has 4 Mystics Update also been working very closely with Netball New Zealand in the development of the Whole of Netball Plan, a document that I think will be a fantastic 5 Upcoming Events framework for all strategic planning for netball for the foreseeable future. The WONP will be released at the Netball New Zealand AGM in February. The Northern Mystics are now officially underway with the players contracts beginning for the 2015 season. Debbie Fuller and Noeline Taurua have completed months of planning and preparation and have undertaken the first team building weekend as well – I’m sure you will all be as excited as I am to finally see the team out on court on 2 March 2015. If you don’t have your 2015 membership yet, please make sure you do soon and don’t miss out! I wish you all a safe a happy Christmas and New Year and am looking forward to seeing you all again in the New Year. I hope you all have a well - deserved break and take time to catch your breath and reflect on a job well done over 2014! Julie Paterson CEO DECEMBER NEWSLETTER PAGE 2 Community Netball Holidays – time for rest, relaxation and reflection. Change is a process and needs to be worked through. The biggest consistent challenge we hear from our Centres about the Congratulations to new Junior Netball programme is the parents. So here are some words of wisdom; all winners and “An overemphasis on competition – as opposed to training - makes it easy to nominees that were understand why many parents and coaches measure success in wins and recognised for their losses. Our sports have become far more success orientated and far less hard work and developmentally focussed” John O’Sullivan author of Changing the Game. dedication! “You have to love a sport to play it well, and love grows out of enjoyment.” Golfing great Jack Nicklaus. “Our job as a coach is to enhance players leaving them at the end of the season to be a better, more skilled player than when they started. Win or lose it simply doesn’t matter”. Coaches Talk column in AMI Netball North Harbour’s November 2014 newsletter. So a challenge next year is to collectively focus on our parents who need to review the purpose of sport and work them through the change. So hopefully they at their children are enjoying their netball and developing their fundamental netball skills while having fun. Counties Manukau Sport and their ‘Have a go Days’ have provided an enjoyable experience working with the other codes of sport to deliver quality skill sessions in the Isaiah from Puhinui School schools. The fun and effort the children express no matter what obstacles they may have to overcome, as you can see from Isaiah (Puhinui School) who although is bound to his wheelchair will still partake in all activities. Papatoetoe North School and Sir Edmond Hillary School also took part in the ‘Have a go Days’ and again great to see the level of skill from not just the girls but also the boys who took part. A lot of questions have been asked by the children where can they go to play so Centres get ready here we go for 2015! Netball Active in Schools Programme completed for 2014. A very successful program that was rolled out in June 2014 with 700 students participating from 20 schools across the mid north area. A graduation dinner was held for 12; leadership girls from Northern Wairoa Netball Tracey Spence (NDO) pictured with the Centre. Another successful year coordinated by Leadership Mentor, Simone Matthews. students from Papatoetoe North School Hayley Tipene was awarded the Netball Code Winner for 2014 at the recent Konika Minolta Sport Northland Sports Awards. This capped off an impressive year for Hayley who also won the Far North District Council Sports Awards Netballer of the year, Kerikeri Netball Centre and Whangarei Netball Centre Player of the year. Also congratulations to Aileen Mason for her sporting acknowledgement award from Sport Waitakere, Cheryl Witana for her voulunteer award from Counties Manukau Sport and Maia Wilson for Netballer of the year ASB College Sport and for being a finalist in the Junior Maori Sportswoman of the Year. Congratulations to all other winners and nominees that were recognised for their hard work and dedication to netball throughout the Zone! We want to thank you for your contribution to making netball the sport it is! Anne Nicholson (Junior NDO) with the A big thank you all the Centres for their support throughout this season and students from Sir Edmond Hillary School wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! There is much to be proud of and much work still to be done, which is the nature of our establishment phase. Firstly, there are many to thank and acknowledge for the progress that has been made. None of this would have been possible without the dedication and ongoing support of our staff, centres, sponsors, funding partners, Netball NZ, TTNL and the wider netball community, whether they be players, coaches, umpires, officials or administrators. Ultimately we are all in this together for the benefit and future growth of netball at all levels of the game. On behalf of the NCZ board, we cannot thank you enough for your ongoing contribution. The Haier Pulse enjoyed its most successful year to date in 2013, with some fantastic results on the court in front of packed crowds at our home games. I would like to acknowledge the contribution of our coach Robyn Broughton and her management team to the team’s continued development, along with the players led by their inspirational captain Katrina Grant. Establishing the NCZ board and management team, implementing key recommendations of the Zone working party and setting and implementing a clear strategic direction for the Zone have been a major focus of the Board, as has been finding the right staff, coaches, players and funds to ensure its sustainability.

Netball Northern Zone Map CONTENTS From the Chair and CEO 4 Commercial Partners 6 Community Netball 7 Performance 13 SKYCITY Mystics 16 Results Northern Zone 20 Financials 21 From the CEO & Chair It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the 2015 Annual Report of the Netball Northern Zone. It has been another satisfying year with progress being shown in all aspects of the work we are involved in, from ANZ FutureFerns through to high performance (SKYCITY Mystics) . Netball New Zealand and the five Zones continued to refine our organization’s role and purpose through- out the year. We all have a very high commitment to alignment with the national Whole of Netball plan and linking closely with Netball NZ’s strategies. Targets were set by Netball New Zealand in consultation with each of the zones and focused largely on increasing player participation as well as coach and umpire numbers. We were successful in some areas, but also recognized that targets in some other areas were not realistic, so were able to review these number for the 2016 season. The CEO’s of the Zone and Netball New Zealand continue to have regular meetings as do the Community and Performance team nationally. National Chair meetings are also held twice per annum, usually alongside the CEO meeting. It was a good outcome for the Coach Development role to transition from Netball New Zealand into the Zones earlier this year. We now have very clear lines of accountability for outcomes in this area and we were fortunate to be able to secure Tania Heap with such a wealth of experience in coach development.
