Framing the genesis of innovative building processes and techniques within the context of Rome’s early expansion, he traces technological change in monumental construction in long-established urban centers and new Roman colonial cites founded in the 2nd century BCE in central Italy. Mogetta weaves together excavation data from both public monu- ments and private domestic architecture that previously have been studied in isolation. Highlighting the organization of the building industry, he also explores the political motivations and cultural aspirations of patrons of monumental architecture, reconstructing how they negotiated economic and logistical constraints by drawing from both local traditions and long- distance networks. By incorporating the available scientific evidence into the development of concrete technology, Mogetta also demonstrates the contributions of anonymous builders and contractors, shining a light on their ability to exploit locally available resources. marcello mogetta is a Mediterranean archaeologist whose research focuses on early Roman urbanism in Italy. He conducts primary fieldwork at the sites of Gabii (Gabii Project) and Pompeii (Venus Pompeiana Project), for which he has received multiple grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Loeb Classical Library Foundation, the AIA, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council. He coordinates the CaLC-Rome Project, an international collaboration that applies 3D mod- eling and surface analysis to the life cycle of ceramic vessels from the Esquiline necropolis in Rome. -

Dam 1 Dam A dam is a barrier that impounds water or underground streams. Dams generally serve the primary purpose of retaining water, while other structures such as floodgates or levees (also known as dikes) are used to manage or prevent water flow into specific land regions. Hydropower and pumped-storage hydroelectricity are often used in conjunction with dams to generate electricity. LORRIO ALVARADO** Resumen: Estudio de la evolución de Segobriga desde un castro celtibérico originario del siglo VI a.C. documentado por materiales hallados en las excavaciones, hasta su transformación en oppi- dum en el siglo I a.C., que se relaciona con la destrucción de Contrebia Carbica en las Guerras Sertorianas. El 15 a.C. Augusto le dio estatus de municipium romano y se emprendió una esplén- dida política urbanística bajo la que se observan tradiciones celtibéricas. Por ello, Segobriga cons- tituye uno de los mejores ejemplos conocidos de romanización de una ciudad celtíbero-romana. It was a Celtiberian hill-fort of the VI century BC, documented by the materials found in layers of the Roman town. This hill-fort lasted till it became an oppidum after the destruction in the Sertorius War (c. 74 BC) of the nearby oppidum of Contrebia Carbica (capital of the Carpetania region). Augustus transformed Segobriga in municipium in the 15 BC, which undertook a monumental city- planning policy. Thereafter, Segobriga constitutes one of the best examples of a Celtibero-Roman town, but keeping some Celtiberian traditions under its Roman structure. (Marc Bloch, Apologie pour l'histoire [Paris 1952] 73) While the range of occupations attested for residents of the city of Rome has been the subject of several studies,1 considerably less attention has been focused upon jobs in the provinces. This disparity may be due partly to an understandably greater interest in the imperial capital than in peripheral regions, but also and perhaps chiefly to the fact that the columbaria of Rome provide convenient, "closed" samples of inscriptions from a single city within limited chronological bounds, whereas the epigraphic evidence (which is by far the largest segment of testimony)2 for provincial jobs, being scattered over vast geographical tracts and extensive periods of time, is far less diagnostic. An analysis of the epitaphs from a single provincial city would in most cases yield only a handful of jobs, while an attempted study of a chronologically restricted sample would be considerably impeded by our inability to date closely the majority of the inscriptions. For better or worse, then, all the inscriptions of a province or region should be studied as a whole, preferably in constant comparison with avail- able literary and iconographie evidence, and the provincial historian may thereby hope to reap a large selection of job titles from his chosen bailiwick.3 32 33 The present paper examines the types of jobs attested for the residents of Spain from the advent of the Romans in the late third century B.C. -

HOLDING BACK TIME: HOW ARE GEORGIA'S HISTORIC DAMS UNIQUE RESOURCES? by MARK MOONEY (Under the Direction of Wayde Brown) ABSTRACT Much of what we recognize as modern, urban, industrialized Georgia can be credited to the availability and development of water power. Historic dams, originally through direct mechanical drives and later through electrical generation and transmission, provided significant impetus for the growth of the state. Additionally, the scale, scope, effort, and ingenuity involved in the construction of large dams makes them awe inspiring structures. Despite their contribution to our culture, and the complex context surrounding their construction, dams are often overlooked as historic resources. This thesis studies historic dams from around the country to establish a context for examining Georgia's own dams. How are they unique resources, deserving of a discrete set of tools for preservation? Four Georgia dams are evaluated and suggestions are made based on the conclusions found. Mess A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Department of Architectural History In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Architectural History May 2014 Cammy Brothers __________________ Sheila Crane __________________ John Dobbins __________________ ii ABSTRACT Infrastructure has always played an important role in urban planning, though the focus of urban form is often the road system and the water system is only secondary. This is a misconception as often times the hydraulic infrastructure determined where roads were placed. Architectural structures were built where easily accessible potable water was found. People established towns and cities around water, like coasts, riverbanks, and natural springs. This study isolates two aqueducts, the Aqua Traiana and its Renaissance counterpart, the Aqua Paola. Both of these aqueducts were exceptional feats of engineering in their planning, building techniques, and functionality; however, by the end of their construction, they symbolized more than their outward utilitarian architecture. Within their given time periods, these aqueducts impacted an entire region of Rome that had twice been cut off from the rest of the city because of its lack of a water supply and its remote location across the Tiber. The Aqua Traiana and Aqua Paola completely transformed this area by improving residents’ hygiene, building up an industrial district, and beautifying the area of Trastevere. This study -

This study tackles a review for the concrete arch-dams’ design process, from a dual sustainability/safety management approach. Sustainability is evaluated through a design optimization for dams´ stability and deformation analysis; safety is directly related to the reduction and consequences of failure risk. For that, several scenarios about stability and deformation, identifying desirable and undesirable actions, were estimated. More than 100 specific parameters regarding dam-reservoir-foundation-sediments system and their interactions have been collected. Also, a summary of mathematical modelling was made, and more than 100 references were summarized. The following consecutive steps, required to design engineering (why act?), maintenance (when to act) and operations activities (how to act), were evaluated: individuation of hazards, definition of failure potential and estimation of consequences (harm to people, assets and environment). -
