The Evolution Pathways, Dynamics and Perspectives of Ningbo-Zhoushan Port (China)
From a feeder port to a hub port: the evolution pathways, dynamics and perspectives of Ningbo-Zhoushan port (China) Abstract: This paper analyses the spatio-temporal evolution of Ningbo-Zhoushan port growing from a feeder port to a hub port finding the historical pathways followed by its expanding in terms of container throughput capacity and total traffic. The dynamic mechanism of evolution is the results of economic globalization, containerization and its natural endowments in channel and terminal depths. Analysis of the traffic evolution and its underlying dynamics suggest 3 periods in the development processes of container transport in Ningbo-Zhoushan: (1) adoption period (1986-2000) in which the main dynamics is the impact of the Chinese ‘Open Door policy’; (2) acceleration period (2001-2008) in which the dynamics is related of the mainland China’s entry into the WTO; (3) peak growth period (2009-now) in which the dynamics is impacted by the anti-crisis strategy against the financial and economic crisis in 2008. We analyse the perspectives of Ningbo-Zhoushan port. ARIMA model is employed to forecast the container traffic in the coming future; about after 2026, the throughput in Ningbo-Zhoushan port would reach about 49 million TEU which would be approximately equal to that of Shanghai port. The resultant port development would exemplify a model of spatial distribution such as a multi-layered gateway hub. In the respect of growth potential, Ningbo-Zhoushan port possesses excellent coastline resource suitable for deep-water berthing, bonded port policy and free trade zone policy. Geographical position, service level, hinterland economic level and government will support its perspectives. -

AGORA | | RESEARCH LETTER Time to sputum culture conversion and treatment outcome of patients with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis: a prospective cohort study from urban China To the Editor: Sputum culture plays an important role in monitoring treatment response in patients with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB), and sputum culture conversion is a clinical tool used to predict therapeutic efficacy [1]. Monthly culture monitoring is essential for earlier detection of treatment failure in patients with MDR-TB. More sensitive signals of nonresponse would further avoid adverse outcomes [2]. Evidence exists suggesting that sputum culture conversion after 2 months of treatment may be an early predictor of treatment success in patients with MDR-TB [3, 4]. Although sputum culture conversion has been used substantially in clinical settings, few prospective cohort studies have investigated its efficacy after different durations of MDR-TB treatment, and no studies have been performed in China or India [5, 6]. We evaluated whether 2-, 3-, 6- or 24-month culture conversion predicted treatment success in patients with MDR-TB. The study was conducted in four cities (Xuzhou, Lianyungang, Zhenjiang and Nantong) in Jiangsu province, China. Xuzhou and Lianyungang, both located in the north of Jiangsu province, are economically underdeveloped areas with a higher TB burden while Zhenjiang, situated in the south, is a relatively rich city with a lighter TB burden, and Nantong, located in the middle of Jiangsu, is a middle-income developed city with a moderate TB burden [7]. All patients with MDR-TB were enrolled consecutively between December 2011 and March 2014. Patients with MDR-TB were identified at the time of diagnosis by regional reference laboratories using traditional drug sensitivity tests (DST), as previously described [8]. -

How did China achieve this rapid growth? What have been its key drivers? And, most important, can China sustain the incredible success? While policy makers, business people, and scholars continue to debate these topics, one thing is clear: the numerous special economic zones and industrial clusters that emerged after the country’s reforms are without doubt two important engines of China’s remarkable development. The special economic zones and industrial clusters have made crucial contributions to China’s economic success. Foremost, the special economic zones (especially the first several) successfully tested the market economy and new institutions and became role models for the rest of the country to follow. Together with the numerous industrial clusters, the special economic zones have contributed significantly to gross domestic product, employment, exports, and attraction of foreign investment. The special economic zones have also played important roles in bringing new technologies to China and in adopting modern management practices. However, after 30 years’ development, they also face many significant challenges in moving forward.
