Cheryl Weaver stars as fashion doyenne Diana Vreeland in this one- woman play. The Kansas City premiere is directed by Doug Weaver. FULL GALLOP is a based on the life of Vreeland, who stood at the center of American style for five decades. As editor of Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue magazines, and as a member of the International Café Society, she chronicled the extraordinary people and events of her time. FULL GALLOP is a portrait of this remarkable woman at a turning point in her life. Vreeland has just returned home to New York after four months in Europe—a trip she took after being fired from Vogue magazine. She throws an impromptu dinner party in the hope that a wealthy friend who is invited will bankroll her in starting a magazine of her own. Other friends, however, attempt to persuade her to take a job at the famed Metropolitan Museum of Art. In her distinctive style, once she decides in which direction her life will move, she goes at it “full gallop.” Bob Evans FULL GALLOP previews Friday, January 26 at 7:30pm and Saturday, January 27 at 2:00pm. Official Opening Night is Saturday, January 27 at 7:30pm. The cast and artistic team will hold a talkback following the Thursday, February 1 performance. • Vogue Magazine the Glossy Has Spawned an Industry of Imitators, Two Documentaries, a Major Hollywood Film And, Perhaps Most Enduringly, a Modern Dance Craze
Lookout By the Numbers Vogue Magazine The glossy has spawned an industry of imitators, two documentaries, a major Hollywood film and, perhaps most enduringly, a modern dance craze. Itís also gone through some serious changes over the course of its 121 years in print. In recent years, the fashion bible has traded willowy models for celebrities of all kinds, a trend that reached its apex in April when the left-leaning, Chanel-shaded Brit Anna Wintour (the magazineís seventh editor in chief) decided to put ó gasp! ó a reality star on its cover. But even with young upstarts nipping at its Manolos, the periodical that popularized tights and the L.B.D. continues to thrive under its time-tested principle. • Penelope Rowlands
A Conversation with Penelope Rowlands enelope Rowlands’s biography of Carmel Snow, A Dash of Daring: Carmel Snow and P Her Life in Fashion, Art, and Letters was one of the books that was most valuable to the curatorial team that put together The Women of Harper’s Bazaar, 1936-1958. In became the heavily Post- it noted Bible for all things Bazaar. In a fitting twist, Rowlands used FIT’s copies of Harper’s Bazaar that date from Snow’s tenure for her research, just as the curators did. Because Rowlands, a journalist, was working on a project in Paris, she wasn’t able to attend the exhibition. However, she made time to speak on the phone with one of the curators, Nancy MacDonell, also a journalist, to talk about Carmel Snow, the importance of a good editor in chief, and the current state of fashion journalism. The following is an edited, condensed version of their conversation. Nancy MacDonell: Thank you so much for agreeing to speak with me. Penelope Rowlands: Oh, you're welcome. I was thrilled to hear about the show. As you can imagine, I have a bias towards Carmel and I'm always happy to hear her getting some attention. NM: If someone has heard of any of these three women they've probably heard of Diana Vreeland. I think Carmel Snow was a more gifted editor, but she didn't get the recognition that Vreeland got. PR: Well, that's exactly true, and when I met with Richard Avedon that was one of my Questions, and he’s quoted in the book—that Carmel came along before fashion editors were stars.

Pennsylvania ALEXEY BRODOVITCH ANDmS INFLIIENGE firing the winter of 1969 I had an opportunity to visit Alexey Brodovitch in le Thor, a small, quiet town in the south of France. I had gone there to tell him that the College had wanted to give him a degree and an exhibition, and that we hoped this still might be possible. That first meeting was strange and compelling. Outside that day, there was a clear winter light, and inside his back-lit room, all was shadowed and Brodovitch himself scarcely more than a silhouette, indistinct but also somehow very much a presence. Strained courte- sies in French and English began the visit, but soon gave way to another level of intensity, alwavs just below the surface of what we said. In that simple, lean room, this gaunt and ravaged man. ill and half-paralyzed, anguished by a recent and terrible accident to his son, was by turns gallant and passionate, courteous, friendly and desperately alone. It was impossible to remain aloof from him; he had a way of compelling involvement.

Entry Copyright © 2005, glbtq, inc. Copyright © Stathis Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Orphanos. All Rights Reserved. Horst, a German-born naturalized American society and fashion photographer, created some of the most memorable images of the mid-twentieth century. Horst P. Horst was born Horst Paul Albert Bohrmann on August 14, 1906 in the eastern German town of Weiseenfels-an-der-Saale as the second son of Max Bohrmann and Klara Schönbrodt Bohrmann. His wealthy parents owned a hardware store. A mild case of tuberculosis brought Horst's public school days to an end. He spent a year in a sanitarium in Switzerland in the early 1920s. After briefly studying Chinese in Frankfurt am Main, he worked in an import- export firm as a file clerk. Introduced to the arts by his paternal aunt, Horst longed to find a way into that world. He was particularly fascinated by Bauhaus, a between-the-wars German movement that sought to erase the distinction between the fine and the applied arts. In 1926 Horst enrolled in the Hamburg Kunstgewerbeschule, or School of the Applied Arts, where he hoped to come into contact with Bauhaus artists. Horst's later use of lighting is reminiscent of Bauhaus photographer László Moholy-Nagy. To Horst's delight, noted French architect Charles-Edouard Jeanneret-Gris hired him in 1930 to apprentice at his Paris studio. Known as Le Corbusier and one of the greatest twentieth-century architects, Jeanneret- Gris created the Maison-Domino, a basic building prototype for mass production with free-standing pillars and rigid floors.

A cycle – wHicH began with the exHibition on Carlo Mollino (2018) and continued with that on the work of Man Ray (2019) – providing an opportunity not only to investigate the genius of the great masters, but also to appreciate the different artistic interpretations of the language of pHotograpHy: from arcHitecture to portraiture and from street to fasHion pHotograpHy. Through the CAMERA DOPPIA format, from 28 April to 4 July, the exhibition centre in Via delle Rosine 18 in Turin presents the public with the personal exhibitions Street Life dedicated to Lisette Model and Style and Glamour dedicated to Horst P. Despite the fact that they both started out in the world of photography in Paris in the 1930s, their attitudes towards the subjects they portrayed were completely different: while for the German pHotograpHer His models represented timeless elegance, with classical references and statuesque beauty, the subjects portrayed by the Austrian became caricatures of themselves, emblems of a gawky and decadent society.
