  • A Proposed Chronology of the Judges Era
A Proposed Chronology of the Judges Era Bruno Kolberg Abstract The judges were the pre-monarchic rulers in Israel. Dating the events of that era, though, is difficult. This is because the periods of oppression and rulership in the book of Judges, when added together, exceed the chronological space available by several decades. That space falls within the longer period of 1 Kings 6:1, which states that Solomon’s temple was founded in the 480th year after the Exodus. Because the time periods do not fit consecutively, those who accept the historical accuracy of both 1 Kings 6:1 and the judges era data conclude that overlapping oppressions and / or rulerships occurred. However, no consensus exists on which oppressors / rulers overlapped and by how much. A chronology of the era is there- fore considered by many to be unattainable. This study proposes a solution based on two guiding principles. First, the six cycles of oppression and deliverance that characterize the era follow consecutively without significant gaps (each cycle heroes a “major judge”). Second, the other leaders in those six cycles (the “minor judges,” Abimelech, Eli, and Samuel) all ruled during periods of oppression. The six cycles therefore fix the chronology of the era. And the LORD sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, that reigned in Hazor; the captain of whose host was Sisera, which dwelt in Harosheth of the Gentiles." Joshua had burned Hazor and defeated its king Jabin a century before (Joshua 11). The Canaanites have retaken and rebuilt it. The name Jabin, "the discerning," may possibly have been a standing name or title of the Canaanitish kings of Hazor, as Abimelech was of the kings of the Philistines Harosheth.—The name means “wood-cutting.” The town could have been named from the fact that Sisera made the subject Israelites serve as “hewers of wood” in the cedar- woods and fir-woods of Lebanon. Possibly these woodcutters, armed with axes and hatchets, formed the soldiers of Barak's army. "Harosheth" is the same Hebrew word used to describe the cutting and carving craftsmanship of Bezalel, who designed the utensils of the Tabernacle (Exodus 31:5). Possibly this is a spiritual type of God using Sisera and Jabin as a tool to craft or work on them, to bring Israel to repentance and transform them back into the kind of a people who could be used by God - living stones in a spiritual temple.

PITWM VERSE BY VERSE JUDGES 4:1-10 LESSON: DEBORAH AND BARAK —June 4, 2017 INTRODUCTION: Chapter 3:12-31 1Eglon, king of Moab, with his own people and aided by the Amalekites crossed the Jordan, seized Jericho and compelled the Jews to pay tribute (3:12-13). The Amalekites were nomads of the desert who were fierce fighters. Ehud, a Benjamite, the second judge of Israel, brought a tribute to Eglon which was probably in the form of agricultural produce (3:14). He had carefully planned the assassination of the king by sneaking in a 14 inch dagger (3:15-16). Pretending to have a secret message from God for the king, he aroused the kings’ curiosity and secured a private audience with him. Ehud approached the king as if to reveal the message, but drew the dagger and buried it in the kings’ belly, leaving him to die on the floor. The fat in his belly closed in over the dagger, so, it couldn’t be seen or pulled out. Ehud escaped to Seirath (3:17-26). Finally, the servants unlocked the king’s door, only to find King Eglon dead on the floor. When Ehud had gotten to Mount Ephraim, he sounded the trumpet for his people, asking them to follow him, for the Lord had delivered their enemy Moab into their hand. Ehud mustered a small army and engaged the Moabites in a surprise attack. 10,000 able-bodied and all men of valor were slain; none escaped under the hand of Israel. The result was a great victory for Israel.

  • DEBORAH and JAEL JUDGES 4 Lesson # 31 BIBLE REFERENCE
This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-SA DEBORAH AND JAEL JUDGES 4 Lesson # 31 BIBLE REFERENCE: (The book of Judges) BOOK OF STUDY: Judges Season of Study: Season of Bringing the Savior into the world HISTORY The book of Judges belongs to the history section of the Old Testament. Judges is a period in the Season of Bringing the Messiah into the world. The book is believed to be authored by Samuel, the last Judge and the first prophet in Israel. 1 The book covers a period of approximately 430 years in the history of Israel as a people. There was no national leader during the time of the Judges, such as Moses and Joshua. Leadership was local from each tribe as needed, with God raising up leadership to address problems arising among individual tribes. Without a national leader the Children of Israel were required to depend solely upon the Almighty. During the period of the Judges, we witness the worse in men, but also the (Amazing) grace and love of God for His people. The period of the Judges not only allows us to witness the failure among the people of God, but also the faithfulness of the God who chose them to bring the Savior, or Messiah, into the world. INTRODUCTION Strong women have always figured into the plan of the Almighty. It has been said at times, “God used women only when there were no men to carry out God’s intended purpose.” However, that is not necessarily true! The lesson for the morning, disclosing women at the forefront of God’s work in Israel’s occupation of the land of Canaan, will show that these women are not there because of the scarcity or lack of males being present and available.
