Introduction Abraham Heschel’s masterpiece, The Prophets, inspires a sense of holy envy in those who seek an intimate relationship with God. If the prophets themselves do not stir such an emotion, Heschel’s brilliant insight into their hearts and minds surely will. But for women, the sense of envy may be heightened by the fact that the prophets of the Hebrew Scriptures form a category that largely excludes women. The aim of this paper is to study the female prophets in the Hebrew Bible. Until recently, prophetesses in ancient Israel received little scholarly attention.1 A close examination of the biblical text, as well as the story behind the text, may help modern readers, who stand in front of the text,2 better appreciate the phenomenon. We will begin by defining prophet and prophecy. Then, each of the female prophets named in the Hebrew Bible will be discussed, with attention paid to the ways biblical writers, redactors, and commentators have minimized their impact. Other women in the text who performed prophetic activities will be identified, and this paper will conclude with a personal reflection on female prophecy in ancient Israel. II. What is a Prophet and what is Prophecy? The Hebrew word for prophet is nābî’, from the verb nābā’, “to call.” A nābî’ is one who is called by God. Some of these enemies were those they had not driven out of the Promised Land (such as the Canaanites) and others were their foreign neighbors. The Book of Joshua also shows how our merciful God raised up judges to save them repeatedly in spite of their rebellious ways and idolatry. They usually returned to their evil ways after the death of a judge. In some cases, after a judge freed them from oppression, the judge led them back into idolatry or became a bad example to others with their evil or unwise decisions. -

THE REAL HERO We find the story of Deborah, Barak and Jael in the book of Judges. At this point in time Israel did not have a King governing them. God was supposed to be their King. Unfortunately, the people of Israel quite often would forget about God and would start worshipping the gods of other nations and be in rebellion against God. As a consequence, they would find themselves in much trouble and under the oppression of their enemies. Out of compassion the Lord would raise individuals from each tribe of Israel to deliver them from their enemies, and to establish justice. They were called Judges. The people of Israel were under the oppression of the Canaanites. They were oppressed by King Jabin for 20 years and their situation was very desperate. Judges 4:1-3 When Ehud was dead, the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the Lord. 2 So the Lord sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor. The commander of his army was Sisera, who dwelt in Harosheth Hagoyim. 3 And the children of Israel cried out to the Lord; for Jabin had nine hundred chariots of iron, and for twenty years he had harshly oppressed the children of Israel. Judges 4:4 Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, was judging Israel at that time. 5 And she would sit under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the mountains of Ephraim. DEBORAH THE PROPHETESS Dr. E.M. Ernst, Th.D. BIBLICAL STUDIES Abstract God used many different types of people in the Bible to communicate His message. Most of which he used men, but in some cases He would use a woman. In my search over the past 16 years to hear God’s voice and being told repeatedly that He doesn’t speak to or through women, I am drawn to Deborah. I know that the Almighty speaks to all of His children just as a good father does. Outside of the book of Judges there is not much material on Deborah. Therefore, I had to dig. I will use several different sources including, printed books, on-line sources, and PC based computer programs. Deborah was a prophetess and she did speak for God and led an army into battle. I believe that she, as well as most women can be underestimated resources in the Body of Christ. The biblical context – The Period of Judges With the absence of an earthly king or central government, the tribes of Israel were ruled by gifted leaders raised up by God to meet a particular crisis in their region. From Othniel to Samson, there were twelve judges during a period of seven oppressors. After each period of apostacy, God would exact judgment at the hands of an oppressor. And the Lord handed them over to Jabin, king of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor, and the commander of his army was Sisera, and he lived in Harosheth-Goiim. And the Israelites cried out to the Lord—for [Jabin] had nine hundred iron chariots and he had oppressed the Israelites mightily for twenty years. And Deborah, a prophet-woman, wife of Lapidoth, she it was who judged Israel at that time. The Hebrews were master writers. But they were not overly interested in adjectives and explanation. Character is indicated by what the characters do. The reader must watch for the action words, then use his or her imagination to fill in the gaps. This is challenging for modern readers, who’re used to being told everything! The rigid pattern of the book of Judges is: • Sin • Punishment • Outcry to God • Deliverer Judges 4 is fascinating because although it follows this pattern, it contains a pretty big reversal of expectation: The designated Judge/Deliverer … is a woman! Her gender makes the rigid pattern much more interesting. 1 So far, here’s what we know about our female Judge/Deliverer: Her name is Deborah, which means “bee.” In the Bible, bees are both producers of sweetness and symbols of Divine wrath! “…sweeter than honey, quintessence of bees” – Psalm 19:11b She’s a prophet-woman, ‘ishah nevi’ah. -

A Proposed Chronology of the Judges Era Bruno Kolberg Abstract The judges were the pre-monarchic rulers in Israel. Dating the events of that era, though, is difficult. This is because the periods of oppression and rulership in the book of Judges, when added together, exceed the chronological space available by several decades. That space falls within the longer period of 1 Kings 6:1, which states that Solomon’s temple was founded in the 480th year after the Exodus. Because the time periods do not fit consecutively, those who accept the historical accuracy of both 1 Kings 6:1 and the judges era data conclude that overlapping oppressions and / or rulerships occurred. However, no consensus exists on which oppressors / rulers overlapped and by how much. A chronology of the era is there- fore considered by many to be unattainable. This study proposes a solution based on two guiding principles. First, the six cycles of oppression and deliverance that characterize the era follow consecutively without significant gaps (each cycle heroes a “major judge”). Second, the other leaders in those six cycles (the “minor judges,” Abimelech, Eli, and Samuel) all ruled during periods of oppression. The six cycles therefore fix the chronology of the era.
