“Educate, Equip, and Encourage ourselves and our families through worship and study, and engage our community through discipleship, example and Acts of Kindness, using the unique gifts bestowed on each member of our congregation by the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.”

Kids of the Kingdom—That’s what we are We love the Lord….do we love our (different) neighbor?

Then God said, “Let us make man in our image …… So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. – Genesis 1:26a, 27

Following the calendar of the church year, we just celebrated Holy Trinity Sunday.

It is really impossible to fully understand the concept of the Triune God beyond what God has revealed to us in Scripture regarding the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We are able to distinguish their roles regarding creation, justification and sanctification but we can’t comprehend how they can be different and still be ONE GOD. We pray that God would open our eyes but this will not fully happen until we are in God’s presence in eternity. For now, we hear Jesus when He tells us that we see the Father when we see Him and pray we can simply believe in His words.

The same goes for us as human beings. God created us in their (“our”) image giving us a glimpse into the relationship of the Triune persons of God even as He creates us as male and female. How can we be made in God’s image when we are different but the same?!?! It is hard to comprehend this…rather impossible to humanly know God. But He gives us a glimpse.

As humans, differences are skin deep when it comes to the different nationalities that co- habitate this planet. Yes there are physical differences between men and women but we are all human be- ings. We look different but we are one human race.

So, Christians…we sing the cute songs like “kids of the kingdom” but then treat those who are different than us with ridicule and even contempt. If we believe, as God teaches, that we are ALL HIS CHILDREN, then why do we look down upon people groups that do not look like us?? There is a call for some serious repentance here. Repent. You and me. Repent. We can’t expect the unbelieving world to get it and be all nice with each other. God calls US to be different than the world which means believing differently and acting differently. We are sent into the world to introduce them to Himself by being loving. LOVE ONE ANOTHER.

Satan is causing a major mess because He gets us to pick sides and forget about our true identity as God’s children rather than embrace those who are different.

Here is where we ask for the help of the third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit. We ask Him to help us acknowledge and confess of our sins of division (racial and otherwise). We ask for Him to strength- en our faith and our confidence in our identity as beloved children of God. We ask for His guidance and direction for ways to share and show the love of Christ Jesus so that others would have that same confidence in being a fellow child of God, brothers and sisters in Christ.

How old were you when you found out ______? Ans: Today old!

Honestly, that meme goes for several of the facts that are coming out in the articles surrounding the racial divide. I had not heard of neighborhood redlining. I had never heard about stories where white neighborhoods got the trains to not blow their horns (as much) during the night but no regard was made for black neighborhoods. It never would have dawned on me that families of non-white ethnicity would be re- fused home loans or be given different rates. I know schools are funded by property taxes but didn’t really process that this reality is one of the factors that prohibits funding quality education for those who are poorer. And there are probably lots of other things all these lines that one just learned today on this subject of race. Sorry. Continue pg. 2

‘To Know Jesus and To Make Him Known’ So what can we do to build up everybody and stop dividing each other?

For starters, I invite you to attend the study we will be hosting on Pastor Keith Haney’s book, “One Nation Under God, Healing Racial Divides in America.” See the description below. I am looking into how we can offer this in our current Covid distancing world. When it’s ready and available, please sign up. I encourage you to fit this into your schedule along with online worship.

In addition, we have to put off our selfish individualism and look for ways to build up whole groups of people that are different than ourselves. I don’t have all the answers, but we collectively have to be will- ing to look at ways to do this in our health care, education, banking, etc in America. We have to. We have to start a change that will, hopefully sooner than later, bring about equality that is way more significant than just taking down the “whites only” signage.

Please. Please let us be willing to work together so we can enact meaningful change for those who have been treated far far less than the human beings they are.

My name is David. I love the Lord. I love you. God loves me and He loves you.

Praise to the Father, Praise to the Son, Praise to the Spirit, the Three in One. We love Jesus, we love the Lord. We love Jesus. We love the Lord. (AGPS 150)

Amid divisive rhetoric, violence, riots, and racial tensions, confusion arises— how can Christians tear down the racial walls dividing our country? This division stems from a lack of communication, empathy, and understand- ing. Author Rev. B. Keith Haney, an African American LCMS pastor, encourages everyone to seek answers to racial tensions in the only place where truth and peace can be found—God’s Word. Healing must begin with Jesus. In this downloadable six-session study, you’ll openly communicate and begin the healing process. Healing takes time and effort and can only be accomplished as God changes our sinful human hearts.

Let’s be a nation united—united under God.

An ordained pastor for over 20 years, Rev. B. Keith Haney is the Mission Faciliator for the Northern Illinois District of the LCMS. He has served multi-ethnic urban congregations in Detroit, St. Louis, and Milwaukee for over 13 years. In January 2016, he started to write a blog to encourage believers in their faith journey and non-believers to explore difficult faith issues. The discussion on race in America has grown out of an increased awareness that there were few voices speaking God’s truth and hope into the racial tension. This Bible study along with his blog are opening doors to have that authentic and honest conversation.

Greetings in Christ our Lord!

These past few months we have all been through many kinds of turmoil--emotional, financial, and perhaps even spiritual. The leadership at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church has endeavored to do all possible to keep our mission of “Knowing Jesus and making Him known” while adhering to practices that keep us all safe and well. Though we’ve had to resort to new technologies by presenting our worship over the internet, we have not missed a single service! The purpose of this letter is to let you know how we will continue to observe safe practices in the coming months.

If you are unable or uncomfortable joining us in person, the weekly prerecorded service on YouTube will continue. Private Holy Communion will be available just inside the front door on Sundays from 11:00 a.m. until noon and on Mondays from noon until 1:00 p.m. Alternatively, Pastor Dave would be honored to bring Holy Communion to your doorstep. Please let us know what else the people of Beautiful Savior can do to serve you.

For a while the church and worship services are going to be a bit different than we’ve been used to. We ask that each worshipper bring his or her own face covering, as we do not have the resources to provide them. Though worship will begin at 9:30 a.m. we ask that you consider arriving a few minutes early to allow an orderly entry. If the weather allows, our front doors will be wide open to allow you to enter without touching the door. During inclement weather, a dedicated greeter will open the front door for you in order to welcome you to worship. (The rear doors will be locked.) We ask that you take jackets, coats, and other personal items with you into the sanctuary. Bulletins will be distributed by an usher who is wearing a face covering and gloves. Please take your seat immediately, one family to a pew, keeping safe social distancing in mind. We will have every-other pew closed off to maintain a safe distance between congregation members. Studies have shown that singing out loud spreads water droplets at a much higher level than merely speaking, so hymns will not be sung aloud. However, musical accompaniment will be played, so the congregation members can silently reflect on the lyrics provided in the bulletin. Attendance registration books will not be passed, nor will the offering plate. During the service, Pastor Dave will consecrate the bread and wine for Holy Communion, but it will not be distributed until after the service.

At the conclusion of the service, an usher will dismiss one pew at a time to maintain safe distances. As you leave, please drop any offerings in the plate at the rear of the sanctuary. Communion will be distributed in the narthex as you exit, using a strict safety protocol with masks, gloves, and disinfectant. Unfortunately, right now coffee, treats, and after-service fellowship will not be possible. Please exit through the front door, refreshed in the limitless hope that we receive from our loving Savior.

Only time will tell how long these measures will be in place. We may find that we need to make modifications and adaptations to our plans as circumstances dictate. We pray fervently that these measures will keep us all safe and healthy until the crisis has passed. After all, we want to spread the love of Christ, not the COVID-19 virus!

Yours in Christ, The Governance Board and the Elders

May 13, 2020

Dear Friends of LAMP,

You have been in my prayers, and I thank God for each of you. Things have changed so rapidly in the past few months with a worldwide pandemic and economic uncertainty. I pray your faith has given you peace, and that God has blessed you in the midst of this. I know that you, your families and your church have been impacted. We are sensitive to what this may mean for you.

Through faith in Jesus, we know the hope we have for eternity. We are striving to share that hope with those that need it most now.

We are carefully following the restrictions and recommendations of all government, health authorities, First Nations bands and communities. They are so vulnerable because they live in overcrowded homes and lack access to hospitals and supplies.

With concern regarding the spread of the COVID-19 virus, we will respect the people we serve, which means we don’t know when we will be able to travel to the North. LAMP will not be able to provide VBS this summer in the communities we have served for years.

Fortunately, our volunteer and staff missionaries have long-term relationships in every community, and we will not stop sharing the love of Christ with these people.

LAMP’s staff and volunteers are staying connected with our northern friends. In addition to phone calls, emails and messaging, some other ways this is being done is by sharing a link to our home church's sermons, the sending of "care" packages, and reading a devotion on the air for a northern community's radio station (safely by phone over the miles.)

We will keep them in our prayers always, and we ask you to pray with us. Our friends in the North, who are like family, know we are committed to them. They see and feel Christ’s love in us.

Our help and your support is needed now. We will continue to do good, with your help, as God calls us to do. We trust in the Lord knowing what we do in faith will bring him glory. “Trust in the Lord, and do good; so you will dwell in the land and enjoy security.” Psalm 37:3 (RSV)

Yours in Christ,

Ron Ludke Executive Director
