Epiphany of the Lord, January 6, 2019

Following the star

My dear people of God, welcome to the New Year 2019. I pray that we will all experi- ence the blessings and joy of the Lord during this year. We celebrate the feast of the Epiphany of the Lord today when the Lord revealed himself to all nations. Jesus Christ who was born a Jew but whose mission is for all peoples revealed himself to the Gen- tiles represented by the Magi from the East. The story of the magi is found only in the gospel of Matthew. It described how they saw a star and had intuited that something new and unique has happened. The Magi from the east were well known as astronomers and interpreters of omens and dreams. They were conscious of the world around them as they identified different stars and their movements. They noticed something unusual about a particular star and decided to search for its meaning. Their knowledge was not complete, but they decided to go in search of the full knowledge and truth. This led them to a little village of Bethlehem where they found the newborn Jesus Christ, the Messiah, the Word that became flesh for our salvation.

In order for the Magi to follow the star, they had to let go of many other comforts, including their fa- miliar world. They had to endure untold hardships on their way, yet they did not allow the star to get away from their sight. The star led them to Jesus, the prince of peace. When they found Jesus, they felt fulfilled and they paid homage to Jesus and presented gifts to him. Tradition has it that the magi were three kings. If they were kings, they surely recognized in the baby Jesus someone more important than them, a King that is more than other kings and so they paid him homage. This was unlike Herod who not only did not recognize the supremacy of Christ but perceived Jesus as an enemy. Herod was self-cen- tered and selfishness that he became brutal, killing innocent children in his quest to destroy Jesus.

We are all looking for fulfillment in life. We are on a journey to fulfill our dreams, our vocations. On this path, the ‘star’ that appeared at the beginning may soon begin to fade and we may start to lose hope. The magi for a while lost the star or rather, they did not see clearly where the star was leading them. They got confused and had to ask questions as they progressed on their journey. As they asked questions, they also reflected on what they were experiencing. They were single-minded and refused to be put off by difficulties and trials. We are to imitate them. Our doubts must not make us lose faith, but rather we are to press on and find the star again. A fulfilled life is not without hardship and difficulty. The Magi experienced had dif- ficulties along the way but because they were focused, they found the Christ. They presented gifts to Jesus, but they were the one who received the most important gift knowing Jesus as the King. As we dream and strive to achieve our goals, we ought to think of the common good rather than just our individual selfish interests. The person who destroys others in other to succeed brings destruction on himself or herself.

On this First Sunday of the new year 2019, we reset our dreams and aspirations with a renewed hope in the Morning Star, Jesus Christ. Let us follow the star with renewed strength, determination, and faith. We pray that we will always feel God’s closeness to us this new year and always. May the year 2019 be a Year of Fulfillment for all of us, Amen!

Visit the Elementary portion of the parish website for lots of important information and fun extras: http://www.st-mm.com/elementary. We continue Big Idea Two: How does Jesus teach us to live a moral life? How does Jesus teach us to live a moral life? Our topics include the Ten Commandments, Jesus’ Great Commandment, Conscience Formation, Making Good Choices, and the Beatitudes. Please help your children to understand that the Commandments were given to us to help us get to Heaven. When we obey God, we come to know, love, and serve Him in this world for eternal happiness in the next.

Breaking Open the Word for Families for The Feast of the Epiphany By Ginger Herrington Reading 1: Isaiah 60:1-6 Lord. Every nation on Earth will adore You. The prophet Isaiah foretold the advent of the Messiah Who comes to the Holy Land. His splendor is so great that people from all over the world come to adore Him. Today we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany, when the Three Kings came to pay homage to a baby in a manger. These kings read the holy writings of many nations and read the signs of the times; they were prepared for the coming of the Messiah. Although this Feast marks the end of the Christmas Season, we should emulate those wise kings of old: read the Scriptures, read the signs of the times, and be prepared for Jesus when He comes to us in prayer, in the sacraments, and at the end of time. The glory of the Lord shines upon us; rejoice! Reading 2: From the Letter of St. Paul to the Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6. The Holy Spirit revealed that Gentiles and Jews are both co-heirs of the promise. God promised Abram that from him a “great nation” would come forth. God called Abram to leave his hometown of Ur and travel to an unknown destination to worship the One True God. Abram obeyed God’s call in faith. He knew nothing of this “new” God and did not know where he was going, but he trusted God, Who speaks directly to the heart. When Abram was 99 years old, God changed his name to “Abraham”, meaning “father of many nations.” God kept His promise, and Isaac was born when Abraham was 100 years old and his wife was 90! With God, all things are possible. Isaac was the “child of the promise”, and we are all “children of the promise” since we have Abraham as our “father in faith”: we believe even though we have not seen Jesus Christ with our physical eyes. We are members of the same Body of Christ; we are co-partners through the Gospel. Celebrate our Faith! Gospel: Matthew 2:1-12. The magi did Him homage, opened their treasures, and offered Him gifts. The Three Kings, also known as magi or wise men, searched honestly and diligently for God with a pure motive; and when they found Him, they worshipped Him and offered their treasure to Him. Herod, too, wanted to know about the newborn Messiah, but not with a good motive: he wanted to kill Him; Herod did not find Jesus. When we find Jesus, let us offer Him our treasure: love, praise, thanksgiving, and perseverance in good deeds. Wise men still seek Him; let us be counted among the wise. Our Pope speaks: "When we listen to the Word of God, we obtain the courage and perseverance to offer the best of ourselves to others." – Pope Francis.
