Not to Be Possessed by Possessions

“Vanity of vanities! All is vanity!” (Ecclesiastes 1:2). Vanity is more than an excessive love of one’s appearance; it also means emptiness. From the experience of Qoheleth, who authored the Book of Ecclesiastes, much of what we long for in life does not really satisfy. They still leave a void in the hu- man person, one that only God can fill. According to St. Augustine of Hippo, “Our hearts are restless, Lord, until they rest in you.”

In today’s gospel, a man in the crowd asked Jesus to intervene in the dispute in his family over in- heritance. Jesus used the occasion to teach a great lesson that one’s life is not made secure by what one owns, even when one has more than one needs. This is an important lesson to learn. Using a parable, Jesus de- scribed how foolish it is to become possessed by one’s possessions. The farmer in the parable had so much wealth that he became possessed and obsessed by what he owned. He felt he was secure because of his possessions. He forgot about others around him who needed just a little of what he stored in his barn to survive today. Jesus condemned this behavior and called the man a “fool” for forgetting God, in whom his life is most secured. When the final hour came, the man had nothing to hold on to; he was empty. It is not what we have, but who we are that matters!

Jesus did not condemn material possessions or riches in themselves; rather, he wants us to set our hearts on what real- ly matters. Instead of storing up treasure for ourselves, we are to share whatever we have with others, make their lives better, and thereby store up treasures in heaven. The gospel reminds us that nothing we own really belongs to us. God gave us certain gifts, talents, treasures, and our time so that we can share them with others. They are not meant to be stacked away in storage but to be used. The more we use them, the more we gain in return.

The second reading from Colossians reminds us where our true life is and who we really are. Our life is in Christ, who is everything and in everything. Jesus is the answer to all the questions that we may have, and if Jesus cannot answer such a question, maybe it is the wrong question to ask. Therefore, our love for Christ must surpass other kinds of love. If we are to have a secure life, we must look up to Christ and shun all forms of evil desires.

“How to Plan a Catholic Funeral” is organized by our Adult Faith Formation department to help individuals and fami- lies plan for Christian burial. The three-Wednesday series will be held on August 17th, 24th, and 31st at 7PM each night in Room 215 of the Education Building (school). The death of a loved one is often very painful, and when you add the confusion of not knowing exactly what to do regarding the funeral liturgy, it could be even more overwhelming. Shar- ing your plans with your loved ones is an important way of getting them ready for the ultimate goodbyes of life. The sessions will include coping with grief, planning the funeral liturgy, and working with funeral homes. This event is open to all parishioners and friends outside the parish. A dispute over inheritance is still common even in today’s soci- ety. Having a will or last testament is a great way to mitigate against such disputes when we are no more. If you already have one, it is also good to update it from time to time, and if you do not have one, it would be good to make one.

Congratulations to Ryan Rivera, our parishioner who has been accepted as a seminarian of the Archdiocese of Galves- ton-Houston. He will begin his seminary formation and discernment on August 13th at St. Joseph Seminary, Coving- ton, Louisiana. Ryan has been involved in many ministries in the parish for a long time. He was an altar server and later graduated to be a Master of Ceremony (MC). He is also a sacristan and involved in our youth ministry. He was a Columbian Squire and now a Knight of Columbus. Ryan’s love for the Church and his faith has kept him focused on God’s will in his life. His work as a part-time night receptionist for the parish ends this week so that he can prepare himself for the seminary. We wish Ryan well as he goes to St. Joseph Seminary in Covington, LA this fall. St. Mary Magdalene, home to Ryan Rivera, owes him our prayers, love and support on his journey to the Catholic priesthood. So, let us pray for him and more vocations in our parish and our archdiocese. May God raise more men and women to answer the call to the priesthood and religious life and also to the permanent diaconate.

Have a very blessed week!!

Jubilee Year of Mercy

“You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you” (Luke 12:20). Hardly sounds like mercy! Unlike some contemporary rich folks, there is no indication of lying, stealing, or cheating in Jesus’s parable. The rich man made a living, not a killing. Why does Jesus name him “fool”? First, because of presumption. Five times in nine verses, the rich man declares, “I shall.” God’s not in charge here, I am! Second, selfishness—four times, “my/myself.” No God, no neighbor; he talks to himself, about himself: my possessions, my productivity, my plans! So, instead of chasing “treasure for ourselves,” Jesus and Pope Francis’s Jubilee Year of Mercy bid us grow “rich in what matters to God” (12:21), namely, the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. Give food, drink, clothing, and healing; visit the imprisoned; bury the dead. Heal with Jesus’s own gentleness the doubt, ignorance, and sins of others; comfort, forgive, be patient; and pray for the living and dead.

August 31 How to work with a funeral home, what to expect and how to plan.

Death comes to us all, though it is not something we frequently like to think about. The loss of a loved one is one of the most difficult experiences in human life. In this series, we will learn ways to deal with grief and loss, as well as how to make the necessary arrangements in advance so we are prepared. Our faith in the resurrection gives us hope; these presentations will also give us practical information we need to cope and prepare for a funeral during such a time of sor- row.

By popular demand, we reprise this series again this year. There is no cost, and all are invited. RSVP is very much appreciated. [email protected] 281-446-8211

Help Someone Become Catholic! Ivana T. Meshell, Director of Adult Faith Formation

We always have 8-10 persons at a time inquiring into the Catholic Faith. Must they make this journey alone?

RCIA is the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. It is the process by which people become baptized or make a Profession of Faith in the Catholic Church and complete the sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist.

“For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. But how can they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how can they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone to preach? And how can people preach unless they are sent? As it is written, ‘How beautiful are the feet of these who bring [the] good news!’ But not everyone has heeded the good news; for Isaiah says, ‘Lord, who has believed what was heard from us?’ Thus, faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the word of Christ.” — Romans 10:13 – 17

St. Paul exhorts us to share the Good News with all who seek a relationship with Christ. Being a part of RCIA is one way to respond to this call to evangelize. Each of us is called to share our faith with those who seek it. Fr. Al- fonso Navarro, a well-known evangelist from Mexico, once said, “Scripture tells us, ‘…beautiful are the feet,’ (not the seat) of those who share the Good News.” We need people who will help bring the Good News of Jesus Christ to those who very much want to hear it.

So, who can serve as a Sponsor or Team Member? Sponsors and Team Members are active Catholics who walk the journey of faith with persons who have decided to become Catholic. You don’t have to know everything about your faith; you simply have to be willing to offer support and help in various ways, according to your time and abilities. Please consider:

• Have you received the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist? • Do you regularly practice your faith? Do you want to grow in your own faith and spirituality? • Are you friendly? Do you care about people? • Do you want to serve but cannot commit indefinitely? • Would you like to take part in enlightening conversation about the history, teachings and spirituality of our Church? • Are you willing to receive the training and support you need to serve as a sponsor or team member?

WE PROMISE you will always get the training you need. We will never ask you to do something you can’t do, don’t want to do, or don’t have the time to do.

What are you asking me to do? You should be able to participate in our Tuesday evening sessions of Breaking Open the Word and catechesis (instruction) as often as your time and availability allows. Your commitment is flexible; we meet about 30 times a year, but you do not have to attend every week.

• Sponsors Most of this duty is be a friend. Get to know your candidate. Pray for him or her. Occasional- ly attend Mass together or maybe have breakfast at the parish after Mass. Call your candidate at least a cou- ple of times a month to see how they are doing. Help your candidate get what he/she needs, and let them know that there’s nothing we can’t figure out by simply working together! • Team Member (some people do both!); there are various tasks from setup and hospitality to being on a prayer team, leading portions of the sessions, sitting with candidates and having informal conversations about faith. We need greeters, teachers and people who work in the background. • Children’s Team Each year, we have about 15 children between the ages of 8-16 who are preparing to become Catholic. We often need people to help us do retreats and run the children’s sessions. It’s hard to find team members because the children’s parents are often in RCIA, too.

Visit a session see what it is like! Most Tuesdays in McGivney Hall (old Baptist Church) at 7:00 pm. Our first team meeting of the season is August 9. Our first session (but not our last!) begins on August 16. Contact Ivana or Ginger for more information: [email protected] * 281-446-8211 * www.st-mm.com P. 12
