Hospedagem: Atenas 2º dia quinta-feira: Atenas Tour Visita à cidade de Atenas e Acropolis – Após o café da manha, a nossa visita à cidade de Atenas ira mostrar as atrações da cidade, começando com uma volta panorâmica no centro. No caminho iremos ver o Odeão de Herodes Atticus e o Templo de Zeus e em seguida para a praça da Constituição (Syntagma) onde iremos ver a guarda presidencial (Evzonos) na frente do parlamento grego e do Tumulo do soldado desconhecido. Continuando à residência presidencial e o estádio Panathinaikos onde se realizaram as primeiras olimpíadas da era moderna em 1896, originalmente construído em 329aC. A nossa visita à Acrópolis e Parthenon, a grande obra monumental construída em 447aC durante a época de ouro de Péricles e dedicado a Deusa Atena irão deixa los encantados. O resto da tarde é livre para explorar a cidade de Atenas, (Thission, Plaka e Monastiraki), com agradáveis notas da época antiga, tudo localizado ao redor de Acrópolis. Navio sai no final da tarde e navegara a noite para Thessaloniki. A cidade foi fundada por volta do ano 315 aC pelo Rei Cassandro de Macedônia, no local da antiga província de Therma. O Rei Cassandro deu o nome a cidade de sua esposa Thessalonike, meia-irmã de Alexandre o Grande. Ela ganhou seu nome (“vitoria de Thessalia”, do grego: nike “vitoria”) de seu pai Felipe II, para comemorar o seu nascimento no dia de sua vitoria sobre os Focianos, que foram derrotados com a ajuda dos Thessalios cavaleiros, os melhores da Grécia naquele tempo. A cidade que na época Bizantina era co- reinado, segunda em população e prestigio de Constantinopla. A cidade tem monumentos únicos e um passado Bizantino glorioso, com algumas das mais antigas e características igrejas do mundo Cristão, assim como o Museu de Cultura Bizantina que foi premiado com o Premio do Conselho de Museus Europeus de 2005. São Paulo pregou na cidade de Thessaloniki durante os invernos de 49-50 AC e escreveu duas cartas aos antigos Thessalonicos. Thessaloniki é muito mais do que a segunda maior cidade da Grécia, um centro cultural importante, rico em historia, tradições e atrações são apenas alguns dos tesouros da cidade. Ela foi fundada por colonizadores de Thassos no final do 7º século aC, que a chamou de Neapolis (“cidade nova” em grego). Foi uma das colônias que os Thasseus fundaram ao longo da costa, para aproveitar as ricas minas de ouro e prata do território, especialmente as que se encontram perto da montanha Panagion (que foram eventualmente exploradas por Felipe II de Macedônia). Kavala foi a primeira cidade que Apostolo Paulo pisou na Europa após tróia, (Atos 16-11). No 6º seculo bizantino o imperador Justiniano I fortificou a cidade numa tentativa de protegê-la das invasões bárbaras. Nos últimos tempos Bizantinos a cidade foi chamada de Christoupolis (“cidade de Cristo”) e pertencia a Macedônia cujo nome é inicialmente mencionado no começo do 9º século. A cidade também é mencionada na “Vida de São Gregório o Decapolita”. No 8º e 9º século os ataques Búlgaros forçaram os Bizantinos a reconhecer a defesa da área, dando assim uma grande importância a Christoupolis com fortificações e uma notável tropa de defesa. Hospedagem: Cruzeiro | Refeições: Café da manhã, almoço e jantar 7º dia terça-feira: Dikili Dikili é uma cidade litorânea que faz parte da província de Izmir na Turquia e fica do outro lado da ilha de Lesvos (Mytilini). Ao norte de Dikili, existia a antiga cidade Grega chamada Atarneus, a qual se desenvolveu no 4º século aC, quando foi a sede do reino do governo de Heremuias de Atarneus. A cidade foi abandonada pelos habitantes no 1º século AC, possivelmente por um surto de uma epidemia desconhecida. A cidade também é conhecida por muitos por estar associada com a vida de Aristóteles. Após a morte de seu pai, Aristóteles foi cuidado e educado por Proxenus de Atarneus, possivelmente seu tio. Na academia, Aristóteles fez amizade com Hermias, que posteriormente foi o governador de Atarneus. Após o falecimento de Platon, Aristóteles foi morar com Hermias e posteriormente se casou com sua sobrinha Pythia. No final do 1º século, quando Smyrna era uma das sete igrejas da Ásia mencionada no Livro da Revelação, Smyrna teve uma congregação Cristã que foi perseguida pelos judeus da cidade (Revelação 2:9). Ao contrario de muitas outras igrejas, Apostolo João não tinha nada negativo para falar dela. Ele previu, no entanto, que a perseguição continuaria e os incentivou, “mostra-te fiel ate a morte, e eu te darei a coroa da vida” (Revelação 2:10). A perseguição dos Cristãos continuou ate o 2º século, documentada pelo, martírio de Polycarp, bispo de Smyrna em 155 AC. Após o 7º século aC, a cidade foi governada pelos Lydios, Persas e finalmente conquistada por Alexandre o Grande junto com toda a Anatolia. Desde então todas as cidades litorâneas da Anatólia foram um centro cultural Helenístico. No 2º século aC o império Romano tomou o poder da costa e fez dela a sua principal Capital provinciana dos primeiros anos do Cristianismo. São João o Evangélico, e (de acordo com a tradição da igreja Católica Romana) Maria (Mãe de Jesus), ambos viveram nessa área, que na época foi conhecida como “Ania”. Com o inicio do comercio feito pelos Bizantinos, Venezianos e Genoveses ao longo do litoral, o porto foi reaberto (como Scala Nuova ou Scala Nova), uma fortificação foi feita na ilha, e o centro da cidade passou do morro para o litoral. Após 1086 a área passou no poder da Turquia e os portos do Egeu se tornaram o destino final das rotas das caravanas do oriente. No entanto isso mudou com as Cruzadas e o litoral passou novamente sob o império bizantino. Kusadasi passou para o império Otomano pelo Mehmet I em 1413, quando construíram as paredes da cidade e a caravanserai que é preservada ate hoje. Ela tem se evoluído durante os séculos mas nunca perdeu a sua tranqüilidade fazendo com que seus visitantes retornem freqüentemente na ilha. A importância religiosa de Patmos vem da religião Cristã, pois é o local donde foi dada e registrada à São João uma visão de Jesus conhecida como o Apocalipse. Você pode visitar a “caverna da Apocalipse” em que ele recebeu a revelação e o monastério de São João o Teólogo que agora fazem parte do Patrimônio Mundial da UNESCO. Alem de sua importância religiosa, as suas características tradicionais bem mantidas, oferecem fantásticas praias e restaurantes que proporcionam tranqüilidade a essa empolgante ilha. Syros, uma ilha Grega de Cyclades no mar Egeu. Existem indicações que nos tempos antigos foi habitada pelo Fenícios. A ilha foi o lar do filosofo Ferecydes, o professor de Pitágoras. Na época Bizantina, Samos estava entre o domínio Egeu junto com as outras ilhas de Cyclades. Depois da queda do império Byzantino, na Quarta Cruzada pelos Venezianos e Francos em 1204, Syros permanecera sob o domínio Veneziano ate 1522. Com a fundação do estado Grego, a população católica da ilha foi Helenizada. Porem não houve problemas de integração entre os residentes de Syros, a maioria católicos Romanos, com os novos habitantes recém chegados gregos Ortodoxos. Devido ao domínio Veneziano da Idade Media pra frente, os habitantes tem sido basicamente Católicos. No entanto com a migração de outras ilhas, os Católicos agora constituem por volta de 47% da população, sendo a maioria Gregos Ortodoxos, mas tendo um convívio harmônico e pacifico entre eles. Casamentos entre as diferentes religiões é muito comum em Syros. Although the special appearance of the eggs of the species Phyllium philippinicum, which imitate plant seeds, has received attention in different taxonomic studies, the attachment capability of the eggs remains rather anecdotical. Weherein elucidate the specialized attachment mechanism of the eggs of this species and provide the first experimental approach to systematically characterize the functional properties of their adhesion by using different microscopy techniques and attachment force measurements on substrates with differing degrees of roughness and surface chemistry, as well as repetitive attachment/detachment cycles while under the influence of water contact. We found that a combination of folded exochorionic structures (pinnae) and a film of adhesive secretion contribute to attachment, which both respond to water. Adhesion is initiated by the glue, which becomes fluid through hydration, enabling adaption to the surface profile. Hierarchically structured pinnae support the spreading of the glue and reinforcement of the film. This combination aids the egg’s surface in adapting to the surface roughness, yet the attachment strength is additionally influenced by the egg’s surface chemistry, favoring hydrophilic substrates.

S. de Medeiros1 & Cassandra G. Extavour1,2* Over the course of evolution, organism size has diversified markedly. Changes in size are thought to have occurred because of developmental, morphological and/or ecological pressures. To perform phylogenetic tests of the potential effects of these pressures, here we generated a dataset of more than ten thousand descriptions of insect eggs, and combined these with genetic and life-history datasets. We show that, across eight orders of magnitude of variation in egg volume, the relationship between size and shape itself evolves, such that previously predicted global patterns of scaling do not adequately explain the diversity in egg shapes. We show that egg size is not correlated with developmental rate and that, for many insects, egg size is not correlated with adult body size. Instead, we find that the evolution of parasitoidism and aquatic oviposition help to explain the diversification in the size and shape of insect eggs. Our study suggests that where eggs are laid, rather than universal allometric constants, underlies the evolution of insect egg size and shape. Size is a fundamental factor in many biological processes. The size of an 526 families and every currently described extant hexapod order24 organism may affect interactions both with other organisms and with (Fig. 1a and Supplementary Fig. 1). We combined this dataset with the environment1,2, it scales with features of morphology and physi- backbone hexapod phylogenies25,26 that we enriched to include taxa ology3, and larger animals often have higher fitness4.

COOLEY AND BENET SALWAY IGENERAL I.i General Introduction The aim of this quinquennial survey remains the same as its predecessor, as for the most part does the format, though the team is regrettably reduced by one.1 With an eye to the study of the Roman world, we hope to signal the most important newly published inscriptions, signicant reinterpretations of previously published material, new trends in scholarship, recent studies that draw heavily on epigraphic sources, and noteworthy developments in the various aids to understanding inscriptions (both traditional printed material and electronic resources). In the context of this journal, the geographical range and chronological scope reect the contours and history of the Roman state from its beginnings down to the end of the seventh century. As such, not only does the survey naturally take in Greek as well as Latin texts, but also epigraphic material in other languages relevant to the Roman world.

Ancient Alexandria was built by the Greek Macedonians. Ptolemy started the dynasty and in thirty years completed the first lighthouse, and the grand library and museum, which functioned as a university with an emphasis on science, known as “The Alexandrian School”. Scholars attended as “the birthplace of science” from all over the ancient world. Two of the most eminent were Euclid, the father of geometry, and Claudios Ptolemy, writer of The Almagest, a book on astronomy. These are the oldest surviving science textbooks. Herein there are stories about scientists, poets and religious philosophers, responsible for influ- encing the western mind with their writings. Modern Alexandria was rebuilt in 1805 by multiethnic commu- nities who created a successful commercial city and port with an enviable life-style for its inhabitants for 150 years. In 1952 the Free Officers of the Egyptian Army masterminded a coup to free the country from the monarchy and British domination. In 1956 the socialist regime under Colonel Gamal Abdel Nasser closed the Suez Canal, resulting in the Anglo-French-Israeli invasion. This outburst of Egyptian nationalism and military revolution by this understand- ably anti-Western regime included the confiscation of property belonging to foreigners and the subsequent mass exodus of business and artisan classes that hitherto had made the city so successful. The author was an eye-witness to these events and he sets out the polit- ical errors and failures of both Egyptian and Western leaders.

They represent the deliberative and forensic styles re- spectively. The third category recognized by the ancients, epideictic oratory, is represented in this volume by the Funeral Speech and the Erotic Essat/. Such compositions were not designed to persuade the hearers but to delight them and confirm them in sentiments already endorsed by habit and tradi- tion. The Erotic Essay is usually called a speech, but is supposed to have been read from a written copy to a small select group. The Prooemia or Exordia are closely^ related to the Public Orations. They comprise fifty-six paragraphs intended for use as introductions to speeches before the Council or Assembly. Of the six Letters five are addressed to the Council and Assembly and contain matters of public interest ; they also belong, there- fore, ^^'ith the Public Orations.
