U podstaw działalności Instytutu leży przekonanie o konieczności ba- dań różnorodnych form artystycznej ekspresji, przejawiających się w kul- turach świata, zarówno w sztuce wynikającej z wykształconych systemów estetycznych, jak i będącej wyrazem etnicznej, ludowej i nieprofesjonalnej twórczości. STOWARZYSZENIE SZTUKI NOWOCZESNEJ W TORUNIU (2000–2011) I POLSKIE STOWARZYSZENIE SZTUKI ORIENTU (2006–2011) Początek działalności sięga dnia 28 marca 2000 roku, kiedy zostało zare- jestrowane Stowarzyszenie Sztuki Nowoczesnej w Toruniu (Society of Mo- dern Art). W skład Zarządu weszli: prezes – prof. Jerzy Malinowski, wice- prezes – dr Małgorzata Jankowska, sekretarz – dr Joanna Kucharzewska i skarbnik – Wojciech Romaniak. Stowarzyszenie we współpracy z Zakła- dem Historii Sztuki Nowoczesnej (założonym w 1998) i Pracownią Sztuki Orientu (2002) Wydziału Sztuk Pięknych Uniwersytetu Mikołaja Koperni- ka, zaczęło organizować konferencje naukowe i wydawać serie publikacji w warszawskich i toruńskich wydawnictwach, poświęcone sztuce nowocze- snej w Polsce, a następnie w Europie Środkowej i Wschodniej. W 2002 roku odbyło się I Ogólnopolskie Spotkanie Historyków i Kon- serwatorów Dzieł Sztuki Orientu w Toruniu; ukazały się: pierwszy numer półrocznika Pamiętnik Sztuk Pięknych / Fine Arts Diary w Wydawnictwie Uni- 6 Jerzy Malinowski Historia Polskiego Instytutu Studiów nad Sztuką Świata 7 wersytetu Mikołaja Kopernika w Toruniu, pierwsze tomy z serii Sztuka no- z oczekiwaniami środowisk akademickich – rozszerzyła działalność, obej- woczesna oraz Artystyczny Orient w Wydawnictwie Neriton w Warszawie mując badaniami sztukę Afryki, sztukę bizantyjską i po-bizantyjską, sztukę oraz pierwsza publikacja w warszawskim Wydawnictwie DiG. In order to feasibly simulate these scenarios on a global scale, we need to first determine a few prototypical cities that best represent the entire world, each exhibiting qualities that encompass the group to which it belongs. Our methodology for accomplishing this is centered around machine learning. After collecting and pruning relevant, up- to-date data, we perform dimension reduction and clustering to ultimately generate appropriate prototype cities.

Mo lam refers to an expert of lam singIng who Is routInely accompanIed by a mo khaen, a skIlled player of the bamboo panpIpe. DurIng 1972 and 1973, Dr. ChonpaIrot conducted fIeld studIes on Mo lam in northeast Thailand and Laos with Dr. Terry E. Miller. For many generatIons, LaotIan and Thai villagers have crossed the natIonal border constItuted by the Mekong RIver to visit relatIves and to partIcipate In regular festivals. However, ChonpaIrot and Miller’s fieldwork took place durIng the fInal stages of the VIetnam War which had begun more than a decade earlIer. DurIng theIr fIeldwork they collected cassette recordings of lam singIng from LaotIan radIo statIons In VIentIane and Savannakhet. ChonpaIrot also conducted fieldwork among Laotian artists living in Thai refugee camps. After the VIetnam War ended, many more Laotians who had worked for the AmerIcans fled to ThaI refugee camps. ChonpaIrot delIneated Mo lam regIonal melodIes coupled to specIfic IdentItIes In each locality of the music’s origin. He chose Lam Khon Savan from southern Laos for hIs dIssertation topIc, and also collected data from senIor Laotian mo lam tradItion-bearers then resIdent In the United States and France. These became his main informants.

Urban centres have been the dynamos of growth in India. This has placed severe stress on the cities and concomitant pressure on its transit systems. A meaningful and sustainable mass transit system is vital sinew of urbanisation. With success of Delhi’s Metro System, government is encouraging cities with population more than 2 milion to have Metro systems. Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad are being joined by smaller cities like Jaipur, Kochi and Gurgaon. It is expected that by end of the Twelfth Five Year Plan India will have more than 400 km of operational metro rail (up from present 223 km). The National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council (NMCC) has been set up by the Government to provide a continuing forum for policy dialogue to energise and sustain the growth of manufacturing industries in India. A meeting was organized by NMCC on May 03, 2012 and one of the agenda items in that meeting was “Promotion of Manufacturing for Metro System in India as well as formation of Standards for the same”. In view of the NMCC meeting and heavy investments planned in metro systems, thereafter, Ministry of Urban Development (MOUD) have taken the initiative to form a committee for “Standardization and Indigenization of Metro Rail Systems” in May 2012. The Committee had a series of meetings in June-August 2012 and prepared a Base Paper.
