AMERICAN BIRDS welcomesthe submissionof articles and photographsfor publication. Our major areas of interest are the changing distribution, population, migration, and rare occurrence of the avifauna of North and South America, includingMiddle America and the West Indies. We solicit articles on problemsin field identification,in our "Site Guide" seriesof birding locales, in our "Centers of Learning" seriesthat profiles institutionsconcerned with .

ARTISTS AND PHOTOGRAPHERS--AMERICAN BIRDS is now ableto publishmore pagesof illustrative material, both in color and black-and-white.We welcome submissionof photographic essaysor seriesof topicalinterest, high quality singlephotographs of significance,transparencies of gaintings in color, as well as line or wash drawings that can be used in an illustrative or even decorativemanner. We would like to hear from (with a sampleor two) artistswho might be willing to illustratearticles for us. As usual,documentary photographs will be used,when spacepermits, in our ChangingSeasons and RegionalReport sections. For a "Work in Progress"column, we welcome noticesof researchprojects seeking field reports or other collaboration;we publishadvance notices of importantconventions, meetings, symposia, seminars, and conferences. All submissionswill be carefully considered, but authors consideringmajor submissionsshould correspondwith the editorsfirst. AMERICAN BIRDS publishespapers of a technicalnature but only when written in a less-than-technical,easily readable style: i.e., no complicated equations, lengthytables, or complexgraphs. Major articlesshould be limitedto 3000words; exceptions may be agreed upon after consultation.All material submittedshould be original, and previously unpub- lished. Manuscriptsshould follow acceptedrules of format andstyle, be typewritten, double-spaced, on white paper, with generousmargins. Photographs should be glossyblack-and-white or transpar- encies, clearly marked with author's name and address. We require the original typescript and one carbon copy. All manuscriptswill be acknowledged,but authorsmust recognize that a backlog exists which may entail delayedpublication after acceptance.Manuscripts are refereedbefore acceptance.
