The Spanish-American The Spanish- American War April 25 1898- August 12, 1898 Causes of War • Cuban independence – Under Spanish rule – Rebellion b/c of lack of reforms (1895) under leadership of Jose Marti (had been exiled to US. With others who planned and trained Cuban troops before war) – Americans were sympathetic to Cuban independence and wanted to protect their SUGAR interests General Weyler Y Nicolau – To quell rebellion, Spain sent General Valeriano Weyler Y Nicolau (the Butcher) • Got name in Ten Years War (1868-1878) b/c of ruthless suppression. • Rounded up peasants and put into concentration camps! Thousands died of starvation and disease. Response to Weyler • Brutality of Weyler angered Americans and the press sensationalized the stories of atrocities • Weyler was recalled by the Spanish Government. Causes of War • Imperialism –Manifest Destiny – United States had the right to expand its territory. –The media supported this idea The Media • William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer promoted manifest destiny and war. • Published sensational stories (mostly lies) about Cuba calling for the U.S. to take the Cuban side. – Yellow Journalism CALLS FOR WAR • Pres. McKinley didn’t want to intervene • 1897 asked Spanish if US could help negotiate to end conflict, if not solved US would intervene The USS Maine • Sent to Havana to protect U.S. citizens in Cuba. • Underwater explosion (Feb. 15 1898) destroyed Maine and killed 266 soldiers. • Papers blamed the Spanish and the national battle cry became – “Remember the Maine!” The USS Maine Declaration of War • Even though Spain had agreed to a peace plan President McKinley asked Congress to grant the U.S. permission to intervene in Cuba. • He said it was “in the name of humanity.” • April 20 1898 Congress recognized Cuba’s independence and agreed to send U.S. Military to secure it. Fighting in Cuba The Caribbean Theater • • U.S was unprepared for war in Cuba. (Army worse than Navy) • Soldiers had little training and bad/no supplies. (wool uniforms…) • Conditions unsanitary and more killed by disease not fighting Blockade of Cuba • Needed to cut supplies off from Spain. Then Spain could not maintain itself. • Spanish Navy had to be destroyed Santiago • Aim was to take the area north of Santiago. • This would allow the U.S. to aim guns down on the Spanish. • Had to capture El Caney and San Juan Hill • El Caney was taken with one U.S. division (Video Clip) San Juan Hill • Theodore Roosevelt led a Calvary unit known as the Rough Riders (about 1,000 men) volunteers • The men had to charge Kettle Hill to San Juan hill and flanked the Spanish fortification. • They had to do this on foot b/c their horses had not been shipped to Cuba. Roosevelt called the day of the battle – the greatest day of his life. Rough Riders on San Juan Hill The Philippines The Pacific Theater • The Philippines was a Spanish colony and the U.S. had to wipe out naval bases on this Island as well as Cuba • Roosevelt cabled Commodore George Dewey to attack the Philippines if the U.S. went to war. • On May 1 1898, Dewey’s fleet sailed into Manila Bay, and destroyed the Spanish fleet within hours. Battle of Manila Bay • • A Filipino rebellion against the Spanish had • been in progress when Dewey landed in Manila. • Dewey used the rebels, led by Emilio Aguinaldo to help him defeat the Spanish on land Emilio Aguinaldo Defeat and Peace Treaty • The Spanish surrendered in the Philippines on August 14 1898 and in Cuba on July 17, 1898. • Peace treaty was signed on December 10, 1898 in Paris Cuba Conditions of Peace • Spain leaves Cuba under temporary U.S. control. –U.S. could not take over Cuba b/c of Teller Amendment, which in order for the U.S. to declare war it was prevented from taking over Cuba –McKinley took steps to keep Cuba in US control Cuba Conditions of Peace • Platt Amendment (Orville Platt) • Cuba could not make any treaty with another nation that would weaken its independence • Cuba had to allow the US to buy or lease naval stations in Cuba • Cuba’s debts had to be low • US had right to intervene and protect Cuba independence • Spain ceded Puerto Rico, and Guam to the U.S. PUERTO RICO • How to govern Puerto Rico? – 1900 congress passed Foraker act – Puerto Rico have small elected gov’t but governor and executive council appoint. By US pres. Who had final say in everything (protectorate) – Puerto Rican’s not Amer. Citizens (supreme court rule) so not same rights as citizens – Later 1917 granted them American citizenship and more political freedom/control Conditions of Peace • Spain gave up the Philippines in return for a U.S. payment of $20 million. The Philippines • Debate on annexation of the Philippines –For annexation: Filipinos were not ready for self-government and if the U.S. did not help some other European country would. –Against annexation: region was not vital to U.S. interests and was against principles of democracy U.S. maintained military presence in the Philippines • Tensions intensified with U.S. troops and Filipino rebels • War with Filipino rebels lasted more than 2 years – very bloody • Filipino troops used guerrilla warfare to battle the U.S. Results of Filipino insurrection • 200,000-600,000 Filipinos died (most b/c of disease and famine) • Fewer than 5,000 U.S. soldiers died. • Revolt was subdued in 1901 when rebel leader Emilio Aguinaldo, swore allegiance to the U.S. • Philippines gained independence from the U.S. in 1946 (July 4) Results of War • Ended Spain’s colonial Empire • The U.S. emerged as a world power and a military power • U.S. established rule in the Philippines • 5400 American soldiers died –400 in battle –And the rest from disease and food poisoning Sites • http://www.spanam.simplenet.com/ • http://encarta.msn.com/find/Concise.asp?ti= 03A9F000 • http://lcweb.loc.gov/rr/hispanic/1898/ • http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/events/s panam/eve-pge.htm .

The Patriots fired upon the Britons as they crossed and received heavy fire in return. Almost immediately upon his arrival at the river bank, General Davidson took a rifle ball to the heart and fell from his horse; his soaked corpse was found late that evening. Although Cornwallis’ troops took heavy casualties, the combat did little to slow their progress north toward Virginia.

This history makes the Philippines a kind of imperial artifact. Like all nation- states, it is an ineluctable part of a global order governed by a set of shifting power rela­ tionships. Such shifts have included not just regime change but also social revolution. The modernity of the modern Philippines is precisely the effect of the contradictory dynamic of imperialism. The Spanish, the North American, and the Japanese colonial regimes, as well as their postcolonial heir, the Republic, have sought to establish power over social life, yet found themselves undermined and overcome by the new kinds of lives they had spawned. World War II in the Philippines The Legacy of Two Nations©2016 By Bataan Legacy Historical Society Several hours after the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the Philippines, a colony of the United States from 1898 to 1946, was attacked by the Empire of Japan. During the next four years, thou- sands of Filipino and American soldiers died. The entire Philippine nation was ravaged and its capital Ma- nila, once called the Pearl of the Orient, became the second most devastated city during World War II after Warsaw, Poland. Approximately one million civilians perished. Despite so much sacrifice and devastation, on February 20, 1946, just five months after the war ended, the First Supplemental Surplus Appropriation Rescission Act was passed by U.S. Congress which deemed the service of the Filipino soldiers as inactive, making them ineligible for benefits under the G.I. Bill of Rights. To this day, these rights have not been fully -restored and a majority have died without seeing justice. But on July 14, 2016, this mostly forgotten part of U.S. history was brought back to life when the California State Board of Education approved the inclusion of World War II in the Philippines in the revised history curriculum framework for the state. This seminal part of WWII history is now included in the Grade 11 U.S. history (Chapter 16) curriculum framework. The approval is the culmination of many years of hard work from the Filipino community with the support of different organizations across the country.

    War Crimes in the Philippines during WWII Cecilia Gaerlan When one talks about war crimes in the Pacific, the Rape of Nanking instantly comes to mind.Although Japan signed the 1929 Geneva Convention on the Treatment of Prisoners of War, it did not ratify it, partly due to the political turmoil going on in Japan during that time period.1 The massacre of prisoners-of-war and civilians took place all over countries occupied by the Imperial Japanese Army long before the outbreak of WWII using the same methodology of terror and bestiality. The war crimes during WWII in the Philippines described in this paper include those that occurred during the administration of General Masaharu Homma (December 22, 1941, to August 1942) and General Tomoyuki Yamashita (October 8, 1944, to September 3, 1945). Both commanders were executed in the Philippines in 1946. Origins of Methodology After the inauguration of the state of Manchukuo (Manchuria) on March 9, 1932, steps were made to counter the resistance by the Chinese Volunteer Armies that were active in areas around Mukden, Haisheng, and Yingkow.2 After fighting broke in Mukden on August 8, 1932, Imperial Japanese Army Vice Minister of War General Kumiaki Koiso (later convicted as a war criminal) was appointed Chief of Staff of the Kwantung Army (previously Chief of Military Affairs Bureau from January 8, 1930, to February 29, 1932).3 Shortly thereafter, General Koiso issued a directive on the treatment of Chinese troops as well as inhabitants of cities and towns in retaliation for actual or supposed aid rendered to Chinese troops.4 This directive came under the plan for the economic “Co-existence and co-prosperity” of Japan and Manchukuo.5 The two countries would form one economic bloc.

    Spanish colonialism in The Philippines Portugese explorer Ferdinand Magellan successfully led the European expedition to Philippines in the service of the King of Spain. On 31 March 1521 at Limasawa Island, Southern Leyte, as stated in Pigafetta's Primo Viaggio Intorno El Mondo (First Voyage Around the World), Magellan solemnly planted a cross on the summit of a hill overlooking the sea and claimed for the king of Spain possession of the islands he had seen, naming them Archipelago of Saint Lazarus . The invasion of Philippines by foreign powers however didn’t begin in earnest until 1564. After Magellan's voyage, subsequent expeditions were dispatched to the islands. Four expeditions were sent: Loaisa (1525), Cabot (1526), Saavedra (1527), Villalobos (1542), and Legazpi (1564) by Spain. The Legazpi expedition was the most successful as it resulted in the discovery of the tornaviaje or return trip to Mexico across the Pacific by Andrés de Urdaneta . This discovery started the Manila galleon trade 1, which lasted two and a half centuries. In 1570, Martín de Goiti having been dispatched by Legazpi to Luzon 2, conquered the Kingdom of Maynila (now Manila ). Legazpi then made Maynila the capital of the Philippines and simplified its spelling to Manila . His expedition also renamed Luzon Nueva Castilla . Legazpi became the country's first governor-general. The archipelago was Spain's outpost in the orient and Manila became the capital of the entire Spanish East Indies . The colony was administered through the Viceroyalty of New Spain (now Mexico) until 1821 when Mexico achieved independence from Spain. After 1821, the colony was governed directly from Spain.

However, the events of 1898 to 1914 brought a sense of national unity throughout the seven thousand islands that made the Philippine archipelago.     Khoshbin 1 THE HIDDEN WAR INJUSTICE IN THE WAKE OF THE PHILIPPINE-AMERICAN WAR BY BRODERICK (ROCKY) KHOSHBIN UNDERGRADUATE THESIS Submitted to Department of History in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences as part of an undergraduate research program University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2020 Urbana, Illinois Faculty Advisor/Mentors: PROFESSOR AUGUSTO ESPIRITU, ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR PROFESSOR KRISTIN HOGANSON, DIRECTOR OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES Khoshbin 2 Abstract: This thesis describes the United States’ campaign in the Philippines and the atrocities that occurred there and tells the story of how those atrocities were hidden, marginalized, and forgotten in the years after the war. I will show how this was not a natural process, that the Philippine- American war was not passively misunderstood or forgotten. Instead, I will show how misinformation and the suppression of the truth was an orchestrated effort by imperialist politicians and military officials to control the narrative, justify their decisions and protect their policies. Specifically, this thesis will analyze the hearings before the Committee on the Philippines, which was tasked with investigating the reports of atrocities, as well as the military courts-martial after the war. Analysis of that bias and partisanship reveals that the hearings were more of a vindication than an investigation, and the courts-martial were more of a search for an excuse than a search for justice. This thesis will explain the precedents of military misconduct and political manipulation that were established by how United States politicians and military officials dealt with the atrocities that occurred during one of the United States’ first overseas imperialist occupations.
