Title: Midland Studio College Nuneaton Author: Department for Education (DfE) Impact Assessment – Section 9 Academies Act Duty 1. Section 9 of the Academies Act 2010 (later as amended by the Education Act 2011) places a duty on the Secretary of State to take into account what the impact of establishing the institution would likely be on maintained schools, Academies, institutions within the further education sector and alternative provision in the area in which the institution is (or is proposed to be) situated. Any adverse impact will need to be balanced against the benefits of establishing the new school. 2. We have carried out an Impact Assessment (see Annex B1) which concludes that the impact on most local schools should be minimal to moderate. One school, Nicholas Chamberlaine Technology College, is at a high general risk of losing a significant number of pupils. It is located less than the average distance travelled to secondary school by pupils in Warwickshire (2.07 miles) so, in principle, is likely to lose more pupils to the new Studio School than schools further away. Additionally, it has attainment below the national average and Ofsted considers that it ‘Requires Improvement’ so parents/pupils may be attracted to an alternative. 3. The school was undersubscribed for entry in 2011/2012 and has an existing surplus of places of 13%. The loss of even a few pupils could exacerbate the existing surplus issue in this school and there could be a significant impact on the school’s overall attainment, viability and ability to improve. However, the secondary school aged population is projected to increase over the next few years so any potential negative impact may be mitigated by an increased demand for secondary school places in the local area. -

Thank you for the help you gave during the inspection and for the time you made available to discuss the actions which have been taken since the school’s previous monitoring inspection. The inspection was the third monitoring inspection since the academy became subject to special measures following the inspection which took place on 23 April 2013. The full list of the areas for improvement identified during that inspection is set out in the annex to this letter. The monitoring inspection report is attached. Having considered all the evidence I am of the opinion that at this time: The academy is making reasonable progress towards the removal of special measures. The academy’s action plans are fit for purpose. The academy may appoint newly qualified teachers, although I would recommend avoiding this in science. This letter and monitoring inspection report will be published on the Ofsted website. I am copying this letter and the monitoring inspection report to the Secretary of State, the Chair of the Interim Governing Body, Director of Children’s Services for Warwickshire, the Academies Advisers Unit and the Education Funding Agency. -

Music in schools: sound partnerships A short survey of music education partnership work in schools 2011–12 This report highlights the benefits and pitfalls of partnership working in music education. It is based on visits to 59 schools by specialist music inspectors between September 2011 and July 2012, together with six further visits to observe good practice. Part A of the report identifies five key actions taken by schools that had developed effective music education partnerships. Part B draws on the good practice seen, by linking to eight good practice case studies on Ofsted’s website. These highlight how the best partnerships have improved provision for music in primary and secondary schools and a special school. The report includes guidance to help schools improve their partnership working in music education, including with the new music education hubs. The report was commissioned by the Department for Education in November 2011 as part of the National Plan for Music Education. Council 15 December 2020 Education (Schools) Capital Programme 2020/21 Recommendations That Council, subject to recommendation by Cabinet: 1) Approves the addition of £16.594 million to the capital programme to deliver the schemes outlined in Section 3. 2) Authorises, subject to the approval of recommendation 1, the Strategic Director for Communities to invite tenders and enter into the appropriate contracts on terms and conditions considered acceptable to the Strategic Director for Resources, or (where the scheme is school-led) to make the necessary funding arrangements for these schemes. 1. Executive Summary 1.1 This report recommends proposals for allocating resources in the Education (Schools) Capital Programme to specific projects set out in Section 3. Some of the proposals include funding from developer contributions. (The proposals and recommendations are due to be considered by Cabinet on 10 December 2020. Any updates from that Cabinet meeting will be presented to Council). 1.2 Where possible, and where economies of scale allow, expansions and building works will also address other factors such as: encouraging infant and junior to become primary, pre-school requirements in an area, providing specialist SEN provision, and any outstanding DDA requirements. 1.3 Proposals to increase the number of pupils admitted at schools across a wide area of Warwickshire are explained within this report. Further information relating to how the Council plans for and anticipates the growth in demand for school places is laid out in the Education Sufficiency Strategy and Annual Sufficiency Update. 1.4 Whilst the issue of sufficiency of provision has to take priority, it is important to ensure that schools that are not expanding are able to continue to operate within their existing accommodation. -

Remote Learning The Midland Academies Trust Approach to Remote Learning (Our Remote Learning Offer) Introduction: This information is intended to provide clarity and transparency to pupils and parents or carers about what to expect from remote education if local restrictions require entire cohorts (or bubbles) to remain at home. This document also outlines details of what to expect where individual pupils are self-isolating. The Trust and its academies remain committed to delivering the full Trust five-year curriculum offer including when pupils are working remotely. The remote curriculum What is taught to pupils at home? Our schools and Trust subject network have developed a plan for curriculum delivery that aligns remote learning to our overall curriculum plan. Pupils learning from home will not be disadvantaged by not being in school. A pupil’s first day or two of being educated remotely might look different from our standard approach, while we take all necessary actions to prepare for a longer period of remote teaching.
