WELCOME

Dear Participants:

Welcome to the 2014 International Workshop on Tethyan Orogenesis and Metallogeny in Asia (IWTOMA) and Cooperation among Institutions of Higher Education!

In order to strengthen the economic ties and expand regional cooperation among countries in Asia and Europe, Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed in 2013 to build a “Silk Road Economic Belt” and “21st Century Maritime Silk Road” , which calls for in-depth cooperation in all fields among countries along “one belt and one road”(OBAOR). In response to President Xi’s proposal we have organized this workshop to investigate the possibilities of such cooperation in the Earth Sciences among countries in the Tethyan domain. Needless to say, cooperation among countries and institutions will be the focus and major aim of our workshop.

During the workshop, participants will have many opportunities to exchange the latest research results on tectonic evolution and metallogeny along the Tethyan domain (OBAOR), whilst exploring methods for greater cooperation in higher education, talent training and scientific research in Earth Sciences related fields. We will also emphasize win-win benefits of platform building, particularly in countries along the Silk Road Economic Belt and the Maritime Silk Road.

This workshop is scheduled to run from October 11, 2014 to October 16, 2014. The first 3 days will be spent at CUG, and will include the Pre-Conference excursion, invited keynote speeches, oral presentations and laboratory visits; the remaining 3 days will be spent in the on a post-conference tour and other activities. We thank all Conveners and the Scientific Committee for having devised a very interesting program and hope you will enjoy and benefit from these academic discussions and excursions.

We are looking forward to welcoming all of you to China University of Geosciences (CUG), Wuhan!

Tuesday-Thursday (14th -16th October): Field Trip

The Three Gorges region located in the western Province, records almost complete marine deposition from the Late Neoproterozoic to the Mesozoic in South China. Marine Cryogenian-Ediacaran stratigraphy as well as Ordovician, and Permian-Triassic successions are well exposed in this region. On this field trip, we will focus on the Cryogenian-Ediacaran sections that include two Global Stratotype Sections and GSSP Points for the Early-Middle Ordovician and the Late Ordovician Hirnantian together with a Permian-Triassic deep shelf facies section (the Daxiakou section),and we will be able to visit a Proterozoic ophiolite section at Dengcun, and the .
