TROPICAL LEPIDOPTERA NEWS December 1996 No.4 LEPIDOPTERORUM CATALOGUS (New Series) The new world catalog of Lepidoptera renews the series title The new series (as edited by J. B. Heppner) began already in first begun in 1911. The original catalog series was published by 1989 with publication of the catalog of Noctuidae, by R. Poole. W. Junk Publishers of Berlin, Germany (later The Hague, E. J. Brill Publishers, of Leiden, Netherlands, published this first Netherlands), continuing until 1939 when the incomplete series fascicle in 3 volumes, covering already about a third of all known was deactivated due to World War II. The original series Lepidoptera. Since ATL took over the series, several families completed a large number of families between 1911 and 1939, have been readied for publication. Already this month, Fascicle totalling about 3 shelf-feet of text. Most Microlepidoptera, 48, on Epermeniidae, was published (authored by R. Gaedike, of however, were not covered, as also several macro families like the Deutsches Entomologisches Institut, Eberswalde, Germany). Zoogeography of the Holarctic Species of the Noctuidae (Lepidoptera): Importance of the Bering Ian Refuge

Fennica 2: 157- 173. As a result of published and unpublished revisionary work, literature compi lation and expeditions to the Beringian area, 98 species of the Noctuidae are listed as Holarctic and grouped according to their taxonomic and distributional history. Of the 44 species considered to be "naturall y" Holarctic before this study, 27 (61 %) are confirmed as Holarctic; 16 species are added on account of range extensions and 29 because of changes in their taxonomic status; 17 taxa are deleted from the Holarctic list. This brings the total of the group to 72 species. Thirteen species are considered to be introduced by man from Europe, a further eight to have been transported by man in the subtropical areas, and five migrant species, three of them of Neotropical origin, may have been assisted by man. The m~jority of the "naturally" Holarctic species are associated with tundra habitats. The species of dry tundra are frequently endemic to Beringia. In the taiga zone, most Holarctic connections consist of Palaearctic/ Nearctic species pairs. The proportion ofHolarctic species decreases from 100 % in the High Arctic to between 40 and 75 % in Beringia and the northern taiga zone, and from between 10 and 20 % in Newfoundland and Finland to between 2 and 4 % in southern Ontario, Central Europe, Spain and Primorye. -

The list, comprising 624 species in the families Lasiocampidae, Endromidae, Saturniidae, Sphingidae, Notodontidae, Noctuidae, Pantheidae, Lymantriidae, Nolidae and Arctiidae from the Southern Ural Mountains is presented. The material was collected during 1996–2001 in 10 different expeditions. Dichagyris lux Fibiger & K. T-PVS (2000) 26 - 2 – The Group of Experts on the Conservation of Invertebrates held its 6th meeting in Neuchâtel (Switzerland) on 13 May 2000, in accordance with the terms of reference set up by the Standing Committee. The Standing Committee is invited to : 1. thank the Swiss conservation authorities, the Canton of Neuchâtel and the City of Neuchâtel for the material support for the meeting ; thank the Swiss Centre for Cartography of Fauna for the excellent preparation of the meeting ; 2. take note of the report of the meeting ; 3. examine and, in appropriate, adopt the draft recommendation enclosed on Action Plan for Margaritifera margaritifera (Appendix 4) and and Action Plan for Margaritifera auricularia (Appendix 5) ; 4. when taken decisions on the programme and budget for 2001 to 2003, take into account the following activities : - Strategy on Invertebrate Convservation in Europe ; - Red Book on Odonata ; - Strengthening of Bern Convention website with invertebrate information ; - European Project on conservation of Margaritifera margaritifera ; 5. when deciding on the future of this group, take into account a possible co-ordination with other initiatives on invertebrate conservation, such as the European Invertebrate Survey, which might be asked to play a future role in assessing the Convention on invertebrate issues. -

Summary A total of 1848 noctuid moths of 39 species were collected with Ught traps in the Upper Kolyma River area, north-eastern Siberia, U.S.S.R. (62°N 149°40'E) in the summer of 1987. Twelve Xestia species of all species) known to fly only every second year constituted 79.2% of the catch in the taiga biotopes, 53.2% on mountain tundra and 14.3% on a steppe slope ; catches from the same areas in previous years show that the moths fly ahnost exclusively in odd-numbered years. It is concluded that the strategy is pecuhar for the taiga, owing to the short season and relatively predictable environmental conditions. The distribution of the flight years in North America is consistent with the hypothesis that flight year correlates with Ice Age réfugia, with different flight years on different sides of the Continental Ice Sheet. -

Vanhoihin metsiin erikoistuneet lajit ovat Suomen itärajan Vienan Karjalan erämaa-alueiden tuntumassa selvästi runsaampia kuin Kainuun länsiosassa. Suurimpien rajan- läheisten suojelualueiden lajisto on hyvin samankaltaista kuin Vienan luonnon- metsissä. Kainuun ja Vienan Karjalan vanhoissa metsissä on lukuisia luonto- vaikutus Kainuun vanhan metsän matkailijoita kiinnostavia lajeja, joita ei ole mahdollista havaita etelämpänä. Alueelle on myös tyypillistä itäisten taigalajien esiintyminen. On ilmeistä, että muissakin eliöryhmissä on vastaavia piirteitä. Nämä ovat merkittäviä vetovoima- eläinpopulaatioihin tekijöitä, joiden varaan olisi mahdollista kehittää luontoharrastajille suunnattua erikoistunutta luontomatkailua. Sen perusedellytys on vankka ja monipuolinen luonnon tuntemus, jonka varassa voidaan tarjota tasokkaita palveluja ja houkutella matkailijoita alueelle.
