Engelbrecht Department: Department of Geography,Geoinformatics and Meteorology Faculty: Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences University: University of Pretoria Degree: Master of Science in Meteorology Summary Cut-Off Lows (COLs) are certainly amongst the most important synoptic-scale rain producing weather systems in South Africa. Rainfall associated with COLs is usually widespread, while about 20% of COLs are associated with heavy rainfall. Both these attributes of rainfall associated with COLs are important to agriculture. Widespread rainfall secures good grazing potential, while heavy rainfall not only contributes largely to maintaining dam levels that are needed for irrigation, but also to flooding and erosion. Agriculture in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa is predominantly rain-fed, while agricultural activities that depend on irrigation are mostly located along the western coastal belt of the province. Despite of the fact that all COLs do not pass directly over the Eastern Cape Province, most of them appear to have a direct or indirect influence on the rainfall of the province, and in turn, impact on agricultural production and even the economy. In this study, the contribution of COLs to rainfall over the Eastern Cape Province is investigated. In order to achieve this, a climatology of COLs for the period 1979 to 2009 (31 years) was constructed by utilizing the National Centers for Environmental Prediction-National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCEP-NCAR) reanalysis data to create 6-hourly contour images of geopotential heights and air-temperatures at the 500 hPa pressure level. All COLs that occurred over South Africa bounded by 200S to 400S and 00E to 500E from the day they started (at the formation of a closed low pressure system) until the day they ended (at the disappearance of the closed low pressure system), and that were cold cored, were considered as potential COLs in this study. In addition, low level circulation maps obtained from the South African Weather Service’s (SAWS’s) daily weather bulletins were used to ensure that the defined COLs were indeed extending from the 500 hPa pressure level to the land surface. Daily rainfall totals from 22 well-distributed weather stations over the Eastern Cape Province were used to determine the contribution of COLs to the rainfall over the province. iii © University of Pretoria It was found that 64% of COLs that lasted for more than 24-hours over the study domain had an influence on the total rainfall over the Eastern Cape Province. Monthly frequency distribution of COLs reveal that April and May had the highest occurrences, while December and January have the least occurrence. Long-term seasonal frequencies distributions of COLs show the highest occurrence during March-April-May (MAM) with the least occurrences during December-January-February (DJF). Most COLs lasted for 2-4 days over South Africa and the Eastern Cape Province for the study period of 31- years. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 62 (3): 441–465. The latest Triassic is notable for coinciding with the dramatic decline of many previously dominant groups, followed by the rapid radiation of Dinosauria in the Early Jurassic. Among the most common terrestrial vertebrates from this time, sauropodomorph dinosaurs provide an important insight into the changing dynamics of the biota across the Triassic–Jurassic boundary. The Elliot Formation of South Africa and Lesotho preserves the richest assemblage of sauropodomorphs known from this age, and is a key index assemblage for biostratigraphic correlations with other simi- larly-aged global terrestrial deposits. Past assessments of Elliot Formation biostratigraphy were hampered by an overly simplistic biozonation scheme which divided it into a lower “Euskelosaurus” Range Zone and an upper Massospondylus Range Zone. Here we revise the zonation of the Elliot Formation by: (i) synthesizing the last three decades’ worth of fossil discoveries, taxonomic revision, and lithostratigraphic investigation; and (ii) systematically reappraising the strati- graphic provenance of important fossil locations. We then use our revised stratigraphic information in conjunction with phylogenetic character data to assess morphological disparity between Late Triassic and Early Jurassic sauropodomorph taxa. Our results demonstrate that the Early Jurassic upper Elliot Formation is considerably more taxonomically and morphologically diverse than previously thought.

Johannesburg, 2013 i ii ABSTRACT A thorough description and cladistic analysis of the Antetonitrus ingenipes type material sheds further light on the stepwise acquisition of sauropodan traits just prior to the Triassic/Jurassic boundary. Although the forelimb of Antetonitrus and other closely related sauropododomorph taxa retains the plesiomorphic morphology typical of a mobile grasping structure, the changes in the weight-bearing dynamics of both the musculature and the architecture of the hindlimb document the progressive shift towards a sauropodan form of graviportal locomotion. Nonetheless, the presence of hypertrophied muscle attachment sites in Antetonitrus suggests the retention of an intermediary form of facultative bipedality. The term Sauropodiformes is adopted here and given a novel definition intended to capture those transitional sauropodomorph taxa occupying a contiguous position on the pectinate line towards Sauropoda. This study explores aquatic macroinvertebrate biodiversity of the southern Great Escarpment in South Africa. Species assemblages and the environmental variables of each site were sampled from first order streams across five different mountain blocks along the Great Escarpment. Additionally, mitochondrial DNA of three mayfly species (Afroptilum sudafricanum, Demoreptus natalensis and Demoreptus capensis), commonly occurring in the study area, was analysed to compare the genetic diversity between habitat specialist and habitat generalist species.

    UNIVERSITY OF THE WITWATERSRAND FACULTY OF HUMANITIES SCHOOL OF SOCIAL SCIENCES DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY COAL CAPITAL: THE SHAPING OF SOCIAL RELATIONS IN THE STORMBERG, 1880-1910 PhD PAT GIBBS 330289 Supervisors: Professor Phillip Bonner Dr Noor Nieftaqodien Professor Anne Mager Port Elizabeth 2014 i Abstract This thesis is an analysis of the interaction of a variety of communities that coalesced around the coal fields in the environs of the town of Molteno in the Stormberg mountains, during the late Victorian period and the first decade of the 20th century. An influx of mining and merchant capitalists, bankers and financiers, skilled miners and artisans from overseas and Thembu labourers from across the Kei River flooded into what had been a quasi-capitalist world dominated mainly by Afrikaner stock farmers, some English farmers and Thembu and Khoi sharecroppers and labourers. It also examines the brief life-span of a coal mining enterprise, which initially held out the hope of literally fuelling South Africa’s industrial revolution, and its relationship with the economically and socially significant railway, which it drew into the area. This capitalisation of an early capitalist zone on the northern border of the Cape has demanded an analysis of the intersecting economies of mining, farming and urbanisation as well as of the race, class and ethnic formations generated by this interaction. In delineating the day-to-day minutiae of events, this thesis seeks to reveal a microcosmic view of the fortunes and identities of the associated communities and to present a distinctive, regional study of a hitherto unknown and early aspect of South Africa’s mineral revolution.
