1 COLLABORATIVE ONLINE RESEARCH PROJECT Consuls of “THE DARDANELLES” and “GALLIPOLI” (Updated Version no: 4 – February 2013) Welcome to a resource being compiled about the consuls and consulates of “The Dardanelles” and “Gallipoli”. This is an ongoing project. In this fourth update, many new details have been added, especially from genealogical sources, and some questions clarified. The information shown here is not complete and may contain errors. For this reason, it may appear rather haphazard in some places. In time, a more coherent narrative will emerge. The project aims to take advantage of the Internet as a source of information and as a means of communication. There is now a vast and increasing amount of information online which allows us access to sources located in various countries. Many sources are quoted verbatim until the content can be confirmed in comparision with other sources. If you are a researcher, family member, or simply interested in some aspect of this topic, you may be able to help by providing additions, corrections, etc., however short. This will help to fill in gaps and present a fuller picture for the benefit of everybody researching these families or this locality. Kaan SAĞ [email protected] • Department of Architecture, Faculty of Architecture, Istanbul Technical University, Istanbul, Turkey Received: January 2015 Final Acceptance: April 2015 Abstract Spurred by the Crimean War (1853-1856), Britain established a post office in Istanbul for the British army, to manage all its military correspondence. Once the war had finished, the British Army Post Office was converted into a civil- ian office. Because the old building was found to be inadequate for the increased business, the Postmaster General of the UK, George Campbell, directed that a new building should be erected. In 1859 the architect and civil engineer, Joseph Nadin designed and managed the construction of the new British Post Office in Galata. The building, which remains standing to this day, was used as the British Post Office until 1895, when it was closed, apparently for political reasons, during the Armenian riots. Afterwards it was converted, initially into a rental property, and from 1905 onwards used as the English High School for Boys. Meanwhile, the British Post Office moved into new addresses in the vicinity of the previous building and opened a new branch office in the Historical Peninsula. This article examines the historical background of the several relocations of the British Post Office in Istanbul and analyses these different office buildings in terms of their architectural designs. Candidate’s signature: Date: 2 Abstract The thesis is a study of the first Greek printing house established in Constantinople in 1627‐1628 by the Greek monk Nikodemos Metaxas, who began his printing venture in London’s Fleet Street in 1625. The aim of the thesis is to explore the history of Metaxas’s press and examine the intricate web of relations behind the establishment and closure of his printing house. The study follows Metaxas’s arrival in London, his printing activities in England, the transportation of the printing device to the Ottoman capital, the books produced in Constantinople and the events leading to the confiscation of the press and its subsequent release. The research is based on published and unpublished material, including the diplomatic reports and the correspondence between English, French, Venetian and Dutch ambassadors, letters exchanged between George Abbot, Archbishop of Canterbury, and Cyril Loukaris, the Patriarch of Constantinople; the letters of Sir Thomas Roe, English ambassador to the Porte, and other contemporary accounts of the event such as those collected by the clergymen Thomas Smith and Antoine Leger; and the extant copies of all printed volumes containing the treatises published by Metaxas in London, Constantinople and Cephalonia between 1624‐1628 and various manuscripts dispersed around the world relating to his publications.
