Our Exposition columns offer informed, compelling takes on issues around the movies, from opinions about the topics driving films today to reconsiderations of the movies of yesteryear. Liberace never retired from performing; four months before his death of an AIDS-related illness at age 67, he played 18 sold-out shows in 21 nights at Radio City Music Hall. Soderbergh, on Behind the Candelabra: My Life with Liberace other hand, claims Behind The Candelabra is his last movie. He just turned 50 in January. He first had the idea for a movie about Liberace around the turn of the century, while making Traffic with Michael Douglas. But by the time Soderbergh learned of the book and tracked down the rights, Douglas was fighting throat cancer, delaying the project for several years. When Douglas was healthy enough to return to work, Soderbergh was already Behind the Candelabra: My Life with Liberace his self-imposed retirement. Behind The Candelabra became his grand finale. If things had worked out as originally planned, the film likely would have been released years ago. After a brief scene at a bar, Behind The Candelabra introduces Thorson at work as an animal trainer on a movie set. He can afford to pay Thorson to be a kept man. Liberace has unfulfilled Hollywood dreams as well. Showmanship bemoans the fact Behind the Candelabra: My Life with Liberace he never really made it in Hollywood. Near the end of the film, Liberace is elated to be invited to perform at the Academy Awards. In his mind, the opportunity to play all the Best Original Song nominees is an honor almost as momentous as receiving the award himself. Both Thorson and Liberace, then, are left outside Hollywood looking in. Even as Soderbergh chooses to retire, he can surely relate. His keynote speech at the San Francisco International Film Festival in April garnered massive attention for the blunt way it laid out the harsh Behind the Candelabra: My Life with Liberace of Hollywood accounting. From that speech:. Unfortunately, the most profitable movies for the studios are going to be the big movies, the home runs. Maybe not. Not many. A pretty good number. In the parlance of the finance industry, mainstream movies these days have gotten too big to fail. But it goes further. His artifice has permanently overwhelmed his art. Age is the major motivator in Behind The Candelabra. That one talk show dooms their relationship. It inspires Liberace to get plastic surgery, and to demand that Thorson get plastic surgery too. Getting older ruins their lives. Soderbergh has talked about getting older in interviews as well, and admitted it was a factor in his decision to retire before he lost his his edge. He really fell off there at the end. None of us want to be talked about like that. As Thorson watches the scene unfold, he envisions a different farewell for Liberace, one more befitting his extravagant tastes: Douglas, clad in a sequined tuxedo with an enormous clamshell collar, appears on the stage of a Vegas showroom, surrounded by dancers. Despite his best efforts, though, the truth got out. By refusing to acknowledge his sexuality or his diagnosis of AIDS, Liberace was forced into a goodbye he would have hated. By quitting at age Behind the Candelabra: My Life with Liberace, Soderbergh can choose his own farewell. He can take his bow, then exit stage right, and find other good things to do. Title: Behind The Candelabra Scott Thorsona young bisexual man raised in foster homes, is introduced to flamboyant entertainment giant Liberace and quickly finds himself in a romantic relationship with the legendary pianist. Swaddled in wealth and excess, Scott and Liberace have a long affair, one that Scott eventually begins to find suffocating. Kept away from the outside world by his flashily effeminate yet deeply closeted partner, and submitting to extreme makeovers and even plastic surgery at the behest of his lover, Scott eventually rebels. When Liberace finds himself a new lover, Scott is tossed onto the street. He then seeks legal redress for what he feels he has lost. But throughout, the bond between the young man and the star never completely tears. It's starting to look like is Soderbergh's year. Side Effects and Behind The Candelabra seem Behind the Candelabra: My Life with Liberace be my favourite of his career so far, though that's only relatively, as I'm not a big fan of him. I do have on my to see list coming up soon and I do need to give Traffic another watch before I make any final assessment on him. Although Soderbergh is frequently the director, cinematography and editor on his projects, he may be efficient but he's far too clinical, pushing the audience as an observer that it's difficult to feel emotionally involved in his films. I can't get excited for his half-baked premises that most likely haven't been fulfilled to their potential. However, Behind The Candelabra may be the first film I've seen of his that suits his style ideally. His style is still distant and voyeuristic, but in this bizarre world where Liberace adopts his lover for a son and pays for plastic surgery to make him look like himself, it feels more deliberate Behind the Candelabra: My Life with Liberace keep us at a distance. Instead, the scenes of dramatic conflict, decision and choice Behind the Candelabra: My Life with Liberace played off for jokes and it's really effective, always earning belly laughs with its brilliant one-liners without feeling like it's silly. Perhaps its nervous laughter but it makes for an entertaining Behind the Candelabra: My Life with Liberace interesting film. Michael Douglas is terrific as Liberace. I've never seen him take a character on like this. He's nearly up there with Sean Penn's Milk. It feels like it's been a while since Matt Damon has been in films I've wanted to watch and with this and Behind the Candelabra: My Life with Liberace, I've forgotten how reliable a lead he is. The characters inhabit a flashy world, but its kept on the costumes and sets which are incidental more than anything and the style of the film is kept subtle, besides a great choice of swooping cameras. It does have its flaws with nearly soap opera-esque structure and conflict but my expectations were very low so this is a pleasant surprise. I think I even prefer it to Side Effects. When I first learned that this book existed I was pissed that I didn't know about it years ago. Then I worried it was no longer in print, after a quick check on Amazon I had a "praise Jaysus! I was filled with a joyous glee that warmed my heart. I imagined Thorson's story to be a magical waterfall of sleaze that would flow down a sparkling mountain of garbage and at the summit of this mountain of trash would be a beautiful rainbow. An When I first learned that this book existed I was pissed that I didn't know about it years ago. And over that rainbow there would be a diamond encrusted unicorn with a lush mane of gold wearing sequined hot pants flying high in the sky. And then, and then I read the book. I was suddenly stranded in an arid wasteland of beige and a dull off white. Thorson forgot the golden rule in tell alls, you actually have to tell it in order to sell it. Thorson's story is a boring story of a man done wrong by a chicken hawk. The not so shocking revelations include the fact Liberace liked them young, he had an out of control libido, a penile implant and that he wore a wig. Gay man please. No one cares about that. We don't even care about his compulsive spending, gift giving and house buying. What we want to know more like just me what strange sex acts did he want you to do? Was Liberace into golden showers? Did he enjoy an occasional hot lunch? How about a Cleveland steamer, dirty sanchez, a rusty trombone or a pearl necklace. This is what Enquiring minds want to know again I know just me. HBO please don't let the trash loving public down the way Thorson did. I know that you can dig lower than this Thorson character can stoop. May 21, Mediaman rated it it was ok. The HBO movie made me want to read this ahead of time and it's hard to know what in the book could possibly be used in a film--there is almost nothing to the story. The "author" Scott Thorson supposedly Liberace's male lover but the forced writing style is that of the co-author mindlessly goes through the excesses of his life with Liberace Behind the Candelabra: My Life with Liberace nothing really happens. Lee gets jealous of Scott hanging out with people like Michael Jackson so Lee demands that Scott never leave his eyesight. Lee arranges Scott's plastic Behind the Candelabra: My Life with Liberace without asking Scott if he's willing to do it. Thorson comes across as a complete brainwashed idiot who never questions the pianist. The couple doesn't have a single serious disagreement until late in the book Behind the Candelabra: My Life with Liberace Thorson gets hooked on drugs after his forced plastic surgery which was to prepare him to be adopted as Liberace's son! Even with such bizarre events the book is written at a snails-pace because, like Liberace, Thorson doesn't really want to reveal anything beyond the surface. We gain Behind the Candelabra: My Life with Liberace little insight into the star or his boyfriend. The book does give the gay community a pretty bad name and also implies that Liberace had deep ties to the Mafia. Too bad there weren't more specifics to really turn this into something worth reading. Scott Thorson did a decent job of explaining what type of life style Liberace lived. Some time he rambled on about other people. I have read other books about famous people and have come to the conclusion that many of them are very troubled people. They have money to live the great life but are very lonely people and have some very sick life styles. Liberace had a very permissive life style and paid the price for it. And it was a very high price--his life. The book is filled with examples of how Scott Thorson did a decent job of explaining what type of life style Liberace lived. The book is filled with examples of how he took chances with his life. I am sure that the book did not even scratch the surface of how is life was. He has a great gift and many people were able to hear it. I was fortunate to see him on TV a few times to hear how great he was. The book was choppy in some places and would change time frames. It did not stick to one time line. I have not seen the movie on HBO yet but would like to see how it compares to the book. I am glad I read Behind the Candelabra: My Life with Liberace book but I do not think I will read it again. View all 6 comments. This is a well- written book. Thorson and his ghost-writer did a great job. The behind-the-scenes story of Liberace is captivating with lots of action and excess. I knew little about Liberace going in and Behind the Candelabra: My Life with Liberace book serves as a great introduction to the man and his life. Thorson starts the book off well, playing the narrator instead of choosing sides. I have found in my life few times when things are both offensive and boring. They seem opposite emotions. As the frequency of our arguments increased, so did my drug usage. With the wisdom Behind the Candelabra: My Life with Liberace hindsight I realize that my drug habit caused some of the difficulty between us. Thorson details a life spun out of control, culminating in him being holed up for two days doing drugs with a gun! And then two pages later says: Meanwhile, Lee was back in Palm Springs, Behind the Candelabra: My Life with Liberace that I now represented a serious danger to his health and happiness.
