The mega-production chronicles the epic and deadly struggle for power among several families that has overtaken the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. Who will take over the throne during season three? Could it be Robb Stark? Daenerys Targaryen? Jon Snow? Or will the cruel King Joffrey hold on to the throne? Similarly, the highly acclaimed series Boardwalk Empire, created by Emmy® award-winning screenwriter Terence Winter of “The Sopranos” and produced by Academy Award® and Emmy® award-winning director Martin Scorsese, will also return for a fourth season. Returning comedy series include Girls, a refreshing chronicle following the adventures of four New York girlfriends in their twenties after college. Also coming back for a second season is Veep, centered on former Senator Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), who becomes Vice President of the United States only to discover that the job is nothing like she expected. Also returning for a second season is the original drama series TheNewsroom, starring Jeff Daniels and created by Oscar® and four-time Emmy® award winner Aaron Sorkin, which takes a behind-the-scenes look at a high-rated cable-news program at the fictional ACN Network, focusing on the on- and off-camera lives of its acerbic anchor, their newsroom staff and their news-division boss. After an intense fifth season, True Blood returns sexier and scarier than ever, mixing romance, suspense, mystery and humor for a wild and entertaining ride. Enlightened, which is returning for a second season, follows the story of an ambitious executive at a global conglomerate, who returns to her fractured life after a humiliating public breakdown and is determined to lead a more enlightened existence. Treme, which returns for a fourth and final season, follows the people of New Orleans who continue to rebuild their lives, their homes and their culture in the aftermath of the 2005 hurricane. In this article we will explore how HBO came to legitimatise a contemporary television culture through producing distinct divisions ad infinitum, framed as being rooted outside mainstream commercial television production. In creating incessant divisions in genre, authorship and aesthetics, HBO incorporates artistic norms and principles of evaluation and puts them into circulation as a succession of oppositions— oppositions that we will explore throughout this paper.

Lescure and Yep: Queering Aging: Dialectical Analysis of Mediated Representations Teaching Media Quarterly Volume 3, Edition 2 (Spring 2015): Queer Media Queering Aging: Dialectical Analysis of Mediated Representations of Sexuality Overview and Rationale With a focus on aging sexual minorities, a population often overlooked by both queer theory and mediated representations, this classroom activity invites students to critically examine the intersection of queerness and television. First, students will get a brief introduction to queer theory and dialectical thinking. Second, students will view the made-for-television HBO film Behind the Candelabra. Third, students will engage in a queer dialectical analysis of the intersection of queerness and aging in the TV program. Influenced by poststructuralism, critical theory, feminism, and cultural studies, queer theory provides an open theoretical system to view, understand, and analyze social relations (Berlant & Warner, 1995; Jagose, 1996; Yep, 2003). More specifically, queer theory is both a conceptual model and a set of analytical tools to deconstruct power relations (i.e., the ways power functions and operates in our relationships) and the violence of normativity (i.e., the potentially harmful effects of social norms on bodies, identities, and communities) (Yep & Schönfeldt-Aultman, 2012).

  • Ruth Prawer Jhabvala's Adapted Screenplays
Absorbing the Worlds of Others: Ruth Prawer Jhabvala’s Adapted Screenplays By Laura Fryer Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of a PhD degree at De Montfort University, Leicester. Funded by Midlands 3 Cities and the Arts and Humanities Research Council. June 2020 i Abstract Despite being a prolific and well-decorated adapter and screenwriter, the screenplays of Ruth Prawer Jhabvala are largely overlooked in adaptation studies. This is likely, in part, because her life and career are characterised by the paradox of being an outsider on the inside: whether that be as a European writing in and about India, as a novelist in film or as a woman in industry. The aims of this thesis are threefold: to explore the reasons behind her neglect in criticism, to uncover her contributions to the film adaptations she worked on and to draw together the fields of screenwriting and adaptation studies. Surveying both existing academic studies in film history, screenwriting and adaptation in Chapter 1 -- as well as publicity materials in Chapter 2 -- reveals that screenwriting in general is on the periphery of considerations of film authorship. In Chapter 2, I employ Sandra Gilbert’s and Susan Gubar’s notions of ‘the madwoman in the attic’ and ‘the angel in the house’ to portrayals of screenwriters, arguing that Jhabvala purposely cultivates an impression of herself as the latter -- a submissive screenwriter, of no threat to patriarchal or directorial power -- to protect herself from any negative attention as the former. However, the archival materials examined in Chapter 3 which include screenplay drafts, reveal her to have made significant contributions to problem-solving, characterisation and tone.
