The Society’s Site Announcements of the Individual European National Rheological Societies Time period March to August 2013 The international bimonthly journal Applied Rheology offers all European rheological societies an extended platform for communication with their members and other rheologists. Two special issues of Applied Rheology each year provide a number of pages dedicated to announcements from rheological societies. These may be a meeting announcement for the mem- bers of your society, an activity supported by your society, address changes, etc. In addition there will be also some space reserved for individual announcements. The motivation behind this offer is to collect the announcements that are usually transmitted to us by individual members of the national societies or conference organizers and then printed throughout the year in Applied Rhe- ology. Strict deadlines for providing information to be printed in these special issues are February 1st and August 1st, respectively. We are able to offer sending these special issues – which as usual con- tain scientific contributions, patents, conference calendar and conference reports, buyers guide, news – to all members of your community at a very reduced rate, or even without extra charge, depending on the current agreement between your society and Applied Rheology. The meeting of this young society was well supported by the interna- tional rheological community with current and past presidents of Rheological Societies as plenary speakers. The speakers and topics of the five plenary lectures were Crispulo Gallegos “Rheological Aspects of Swallowing and Dysphagia”, Gerry Fuller “Biofilms at Fluid-Fluid Interfaces”, Peter Fisch- er “Surfactant Solution and Instabilities”, Jeffrey Giacomin “Viscous Heating in Large Amplitude Oscil- latory Shear”, and Paul Slatter “Rheological Characterisation Using Free Surface Flows”. The confer- ence was sponsored by: AEL Mining Services and Anton Paar. On 12 September a Rheology short course was held where all the plenary speakers except Prof Slatter participated and which was attended by 26 people. We wish to express our gratitude to the individuals and organizations that have con- tributed to the success of the conference. Organising committee with the plenary speakers. The organizing committee was coordinated by Ahmed Allal (IPREM). As implicitly stated in the title of the conference, the program emphasized problems where the pres- ence of interfaces and confinement affects the rheology and the local dynamics. Four invited lectures were given by Frédéric Restagno (Laboratoire de Physique des Solides, Orsay; “Nanorheology of graft- ed polymer chains in the dry or swollen states”), François Boué (CEA, Saclay; “Reinforcement from nanoparticles in a polymer matrix: what we can learn about interfacial effects on the chains by scat- tering and mechanical measurements”), Frédéric Pignon (Laboratoire de Rhéologie, Grenoble; “Struc- ture and flow of colloids near membranes during ultrafiltration”) and the 2012 laureate of the Mau- rice Couette Award, Lionel Choplin (Institut Polytechnique de Lorraine, Nancy; “Systemic rheology”). The 48th Annual meeting will be organized in Nantes on the topic “Models and rheology” by Paco Chinesta and Guy Della Valle (28 – 30 October, 2013). I Young Rheologists meeting 2012 Every two years, the GFR organizes a meeting dedicated to young scientists. The 2012 meeting was organized by Guylaine Ducouret, from ESPCI ParisTech in Paris. The meeting was held in St Rémy lès Chevreuse on March 21–23. The 27 Ph.D. students who attended the meeting gave oral talks or par- ticipated to the poster session, covering topics as diverse as food products processing, polymer melts and block copolymers, suspensions, nanocomposites, granular flows. The presentations stimulated interesting and deep scientific discussions among the young participants. Four invited talks were giv- en by senior invitees: Guy de la Valle, Dimitris Vlassopoulos, Henri van Damme and Michel Cloitre. A special evening session was devoted to exchanges with young engineers from various companies (Total-Bostik, Schlumberger, St Gobain, and IFP Energies Nouvelles) about recruitment and careers. The participants also had the opportunity to visit the research and development centre of St Gobain at Aubervilliers. The GFR presently considers opening future meetings to a broader European audi- ence. I Awards The GFR Maurice Couette Award distinguishes a member of a public research institution in France for outstanding contribution to the science of rheology. The award is sponsored by Anton Paar, Malvern, TA Instruments, and Thermo Fisher Scientific, in rotation. The GFR also awards the Best PhD thesis Prize and the Best Poster Award to a student selected at the poster session of the Annual Meet- ing. The GFR supports the registration fees of its student members who participate to the Annual European Rheology Conferences. I Publications The GFR publishes the review “Rhéologie” which proposes news and original articles twice a year. The review is edited by Ahmed ALLAL and Bruno VERGNES. It is accessible to registered members on line at the GFR website. The GFR also edits a short magazine RHEOMAG and specialized books. The book, enti- tled “Rhéologie avancée: Méthodes et Caractérisation”, will appear in December 2012 (A. Pontin et J-L Grossiord Eds, EDP Sciences, Paris).
