A new scientific center has just opened at Singapore’s Science Drive 2: its efforts are focused on revealing nature’s uttermost secrets. The place attracts many young, talented and eccentric physicists, among them some Poles. This summer night is as hot as any other night in the equatorial Singapore (December ones included). Five men, seated at a table in one of the city’s countless bars, are about to finish another pitcher of local beer. They are Artur Ekert, a Polish-born cryptologist and a Research Fellow at Merton College at the University of Oxford (profiled in issue 27 of POLITYKA); Leong Chuan Kwek, a Singapore native; Briton Hugo Cable; Brazilian Marcelo Franca Santos; and Björn Hessmo of Sweden. While enjoying their drinks, they are also trying to find a trace of comprehensive tactics in the chaotic mess of ball-kicking they are watching on a plasma screen above: a soccer game played somewhere halfway across the world. “My father always wanted me to become a soccer player. And I have failed him so miserably,” says Hessmo. His words are met with a nod of understanding. So far, the game has provided the men with no excitement. Their faces finally light up with joy only when the score table is displayed with the results of Round One of the ongoing tournament. Zeros and ones – that’s exciting! This thesis explores nSR100 and its target splicing program as a potential therapeutic target using a conditional knockout allele, nSR100GT. I show that nSR100 protein is effectively depleted in the cortical regions of nSR100GT mutant mice at E17.5, E18.5, and P2 stages, which correlates with phenotypes overlapping with all core behavioral domains of ASD. I show that tamoxifen-mediated rescue in prenatal nSR100GT animals restores nSR100 protein and microexon inclusion levels comparable to those observed in wildtype mice. Collectively my thesis research shows that the nSR100GT mouse strain holds the promise for examining phenotypic effects of nSR100 reactivation in ASD-like mice at different developmental stages, and complimentary models are also to be considered for investigating the therapeutic potential of targeting nSR100 in the context of ASD.     THE ELIE WIESEL FOUNDATION FOR HUMANITY NOBEL LAUREATES INITIATIVE September 9, 2005 TO: Kansas State Board of Education We, Nobel Laureates, are writing in defense of science. We reject efforts by the proponents of so-called “intelligent design” to politicize scientific inquiry and urge the Kansas State Board of Education to maintain Darwinian evolution as the sole curriculum and science standard in the State of Kansas. The United States has come a long way since John T. Scopes was convicted for teaching the theory of evolution 80 years ago. We are, therefore, troubled that Darwinism was described as “dangerous dogma” at one of your hearings. We are also concerned by the Board’s recommendation of August 8, 2005 to allow standards that include greater criticism of evolution. Logically derived from confirmable evidence, evolution is understood to be the result of an unguided, unplanned process of random variation and natural selection. As the foundation of modern biology, its indispensable role has been further strengthened by the capacity to study DNA. In contrast, intelligent design is fundamentally unscientific; it cannot be tested as scientific theory because its central conclusion is based on belief in the intervention of a supernatural agent. Differences exist between scientific and spiritual world views, but there is no need to blur the distinction between the two. Nor is there need for conflict between the theory of evolution and religious faith. Science and faith are not mutually exclusive. Neither should feel threatened by the other. When it meets in October, 2005, we urge the Kansas State Board of Education to vote against the latest draft of standards, which propose including intelligent design in academic curriculum.
