  • A Critical Summary of Observations, Data and Hypotheses
TThhee SShhrroouudd ooff TTuurriinn A Critical Summary of Observations, Data and Hypotheses If the truth were a mere mathematical formula, in some sense it would impose itself by its own power. But if Truth is Love, it calls for faith, for the ‘yes’ of our hearts. Pope Benedict XVI Version 4.0 Copyright 2017, Turin Shroud Center of Colorado Preface The purpose of the Critical Summary is to provide a synthesis of the Turin Shroud Center of Colorado (TSC) thinking about the Shroud of Turin and to make that synthesis available to the serious inquirer. Our evaluation of scientific, medical forensic and historical hypotheses presented here is based on TSC’s tens of thousands of hours of internal research, the Shroud of Turin Research Project (STURP) data, and other published research. The Critical Summary synthesis is not itself intended to present new research findings. With the exception of our comments all information presented has been published elsewhere, and we have endeavored to provide references for all included data. We wish to gratefully acknowledge the contributions of several persons and organizations. First, we would like to acknowledge Dan Spicer, PhD in Physics, and Dave Fornof for their contributions in the construction of Version 1.0 of the Critical Summary. We are grateful to Mary Ann Siefker and Mary Snapp for proofreading efforts. The efforts of Shroud historian Jack Markwardt in reviewing and providing valuable comments for the Version 4.0 History Section are deeply appreciated. We also are very grateful to Barrie Schwortz (Shroud.com) and the STERA organization for their permission to include photographs from their database of STURP photographs.

Between 1930 and 1940 the population increased by nearly 50% from 77400 in 1930 to 111800 in 1940. New cities formed as the population grew including the incorporation of Belmont, Menlo Park and Woodside in 1927. Increasing transportation needs were answered by the opening of Mills Field (San Francisco Airport) in 1927 and the building of the San Mateo Hayward Bridge in 1929. The Great Depression was one of the reasons for an increase in population. Whereas previously immigrants might be likely to settle in San Francisco neighborhoods, now the lack of jobs and high rents led them to relocate to the peninsula. With much of the county still unincorporated it was still possible to find a strip of land and put up an inexpensive dwelling.

  • The Holy Face of Jesus
25 THE HOLY FACE OF JESUS ANSELME LONGPRÉ In his study on the glory of God, (La Gloire et la Croix, II, 3, pp. 408-10.) Hans Urs von Balthasar considers the "face" in the light of Scripture. He wrote that "face" signifies the whole person, and is indeed that person's self-expression manifest to others, offering itself to be discovered. In the Face of God the glory is so intense that a direct vision of it would be fatal to man, and yet we see in the Old Testament how ardently Israel yearned to see God's Face. The suppliant seeks the Face of God and begs him not to hide it (Psa 27:8). Now, the glory of God shone in the face of Christ (II Cor 4:6); "Who sees me, sees the Father" (Jn 14:9). And if, at present, we "do not yet see Him as He is" (I Jn 3:2), it is not because Jesus' human face conceals the divine, but because we see only imperfectly; we cannot yet see God as we are seen by Him (I Cor 13:12). The Holy Face of Jesus and the Holy Spirit "In principle," von Balthasar continues, "there is no longer a veil between our face and the glorious face of God." This is explained by St. Paul ((I Cor 3:6, 4:6), who contrasts the glory of the Mosaic Law, which was letter and stone, to that of the Gospel, which is Spirit. The "letter and the stone" were an intermediary, a veil, preventing the Face-to-face between God and man.

  • Report of the Editor of the Journal of Finance for the Year 2012
THE JOURNAL OF FINANCE • VOL. LXVIII, NO. 4 • AUGUST 2013 Report of the Editor of The Journal of Finance for the Year 2012 KENNETH J. SINGLETON, EDITOR BRUNO BIAIS and MICHAEL ROBERTS, CO-EDITORS I AM HAPPY TO report that 2012 was another good year for the Journal of Finance. We received 1,276 submissions, of which 1,147 were new manuscripts. The number of new submissions was virtually unchanged from 2011. There were 129 resubmissions, slightly below the 138 in 2011. Note that the Journal of Finance no longer counts “style” revisions in the official revision count, which explains the sharp drop in resubmissions after 2008. In 2012, the Journal published 60 articles, written by authors whose primary affiliations include 73 different institutions. Table I details the number and timing of submissions received throughout the year. The primary affiliations are summarized in Table II, which reports the number of authors per institution (where an article with n authors is counted as 1/n articles for each author’s institution). The institutions with the most Journal authors last year were the University of Chicago, Oxford University, and the University of Texas at Austin. The Journal’s visibility and impact remain extremely high. As shown in Ta- ble III, articles published in the Journal were cited 18,293 times in all journals during 2011, a total that ranks first among business and finance journals and third among all economics journals (behind the American Economic Review and Econometrica). Our one-year impact factor (cites during 2011 to articles published in 2009 and 2010, divided by the total number of articles published in those two years) is 4.22 (up from 3.76 in 2009), which ranks second among business and finance journals and fourth among all economics journals (up from seventh in 2009).

History of the Mount St. Alphonsus Retreat Center 1001 Broadway (Route 9W) PO Box 219 Esopus, NY 12429-0219 Before the Redemptorists built Mount St. Alphonsus in 1904, the land was owned by Robert Livingston Pell. Said to be the greatest fruit farm in the country, it was known for its apples and grapes, which were shipped to European markets. Pell developed a species of apples, the Newton Pippin, grown in an orchard of more than 25,000 trees. The Pell Coat of Arms included a pelican piercing its own breast to feed its young, an ancient symbol of the Eucharist. The Redemptorist community, still growing at the turn of the century, looked at property in New York, Connecticut and Pennsylvania before settling here. In 1903, they paid $57,000 for the property. The Redemptorist order bought a quarrying operation in Port Deposit, MD, to produce the granite, used in this building. Construction of the original building began in 1904 and was finished in 1907. The wing on the south end was added in later years. The property has expanded to the present 412 acres on the Hudson River. Redemptorists used the building as a seminary for the training of priests. After initial formation at St. Mary's in Northeast, PA, for six years, students made a year-long long Novitiate in Ilchester, MD, and then spent six years here at Mount St. Alphonsus. The property contained many buildings in earlier times when cattle, horses, pigs, chickens and crops that included corn, potatoes, apples and grapes were raised. The wine used for Mass was made on the property.
