All of these are awarded to recognise and celebrate excellence in science. The following document provides guidance on the timeline and eligibility criteria for the awards, the nomination process and our online nomination system Flexi-Grant. Timeline • Call for nominations opens 30 November 2020 • Call for nominations closes on 15 February 2021 • Royal Society contacts suggested referees from February to March if required. • Premier Awards, Physical and Biological Committees shortlist and seek independent referees from March to May • All other Committees score and recommend winners to the Premier Awards Committee by April • Premier Awards, Physical and Biological Committees score shortlisted nominations, review recommended winners from other Committees and recommend final winners of all awards by June • Council reviews and approves winners from Committees in July • Winners announced by August Eligibility Full details of eligibility can be found in the table. Mothers in Science
The aim of this book is to illustrate, graphically, that it is perfectly possible to combine a successful and fulfilling career in research science with motherhood, and that there are no rules about how to do this. On each page you will find a timeline showing on one side, the career path of a research group leader in academic science, and on the other side, important events in her family life. Each contributor has also provided a brief text about their research and about how they have combined their career and family commitments. The Shaw Prize The Shaw Prize is an international award to honour individuals who are currently active in their respective fields and who have recently achieved distinguished and significant advances, who have made outstanding contributions in academic and scientific research or applications, or who in other domains have achieved excellence. The award is dedicated to furthering societal progress, enhancing quality of life, and enriching humanity’s spiritual civilization. Preference is to be given to individuals whose significant work was recently achieved and who are currently active in their respective fields. Founder's Biographical Note The Shaw Prize was established under the auspices of Mr Run Run Shaw. Mr Shaw, born in China in 1907, was a native of Ningbo County, Zhejiang Province. He joined his brother’s film company in China in the 1920s. During the 1950s he founded the film company Shaw Brothers (HK) Limited in Hong Kong. He was one of the founding members of Television Broadcasts Limited launched in Hong Kong in 1967. Mr Shaw also founded two charities, The Shaw Foundation Hong Kong and The Sir Run Run Shaw Charitable Trust, both dedicated to the promotion of education, scientific and technological research, medical and welfare services, and culture and the arts. ~ 1 ~ Message from the Chief Executive I warmly congratulate the six Shaw Laureates of 2014. Established in 2002 under the auspices of Mr Run Run Shaw, the Shaw Prize is a highly prestigious recognition of the role that scientists play in shaping the development of a modern world. Isabella M. Toller et al. found that H. pylori infection damages the genome of host cells, causing breaks in both complementary strands of DNA. The damage triggered DNA repair responses, but pro- longed infection resulted in unrepaired DNA breaks and harmed host cell viability. The findings suggest a possible mechanism for the bacteria’s carcinogenic properties. See the article by Toller et al. on pages 14944–14949. The Royal Society medals and awards Overview The Royal Society has a broad range of medals including premier awards, subject specific awards and medals celebrating the communication and promotion of science. All of these work to recognise and celebrate excellence in science. The following document provides guidance in the eligibility criteria for the awards, the nomination process and online nomination system. Eligibility Awards are open to citizens of a Commonwealth country or of the Irish Republic or those who have been ordinarily resident and working in a Commonwealth country or in the Irish Republic for a minimum of three years immediately prior to being proposed. Three of our premier awards are open internationally and the Milner Award is open to European citizens and residents of 12 months or more. Full details of eligibility can be found in Appendix one. Nominees cannot be members of the Royal Society Council, Premier Awards Committee, or selection Committees. If the award is externally funded, nominees cannot be employed by the organisation funding the medal. Self-nominations are not accepted and members of the selection Committee cannot nominate for their own awards. Nominations are valid for three cycles of the award unless otherwise stated. Nominators are given the opportunity to update nominations in December each year. Projector Quantum Monte Carlo Methods for Linear and Non-linear Wavefunction Ansatzes Lauretta Rebecca Schwarz Trinity Hall University of Cambridge This dissertation is submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Cambridge October 2017 Projector Quantum Monte Carlo Methods for Linear and Non-linear Wavefunction Ansatzes Lauretta Rebecca Schwarz Abstract This thesis is concerned with the development of a Projector Quantum Monte Carlo method for non-linear wavefunction ansatzes and its application to strongly correlated materials. This new approach is partially inspired by a prior application of the Full Configuration Interaction Quantum Monte Carlo (FCIQMC) method to the three- band (p − d) Hubbard model. Through repeated stochastic application of a projector FCIQMC projects out a stochastic description of the Full Configuration Interaction (FCI) ground state wavefunction, a linear combination of Slater determinants spanning the full Hilbert space. The study of the p − d Hubbard model demonstrates that the nature of this FCI expansion is profoundly affected by the choice of single-particle basis. In a counterintuitive manner, the effectiveness of a one-particle basis to produce a sparse, compact and rapidly converging FCI expansion is not necessarily paralleled by its ability to describe the physics of the system within a single determinant. The results suggest that with an appropriate basis, single-reference quantum chemical approaches may be able to describe many-body wavefunctions of strongly correlated materials. Furthermore, this thesis presents a reformulation of the projected imaginary time evolution of FCIQMC as a Lagrangian minimisation. This naturally allows for the optimisation of polynomial complex wavefunction ansatzes with a polynomial rather than exponential scaling with system size. -
