Creativity: From Potential to Realization (Washington D.C.: American Psychological Association, 2004), pp. 127-151.] The literature comparing artistic and scientific creativity is sparse, perhaps because it is assumed that the arts and sciences are so different as to attract different types of minds who work in very different ways. As C. P. Snow wrote in his famous essay, The Two Cultures, artists and intellectuals stand at one pole and scientists at the other: “Between the two a gulf of mutual incomprehension -- sometimes ... hostility and dislike, but most of all lack of understanding... Their attitudes are so different that, even on the level of emotion, they can't find much common ground." (Snow, 1964, 4) Our purpose here is to argue that Snow's oft-repeated opinion has little substantive basis. Without denying that the products of the arts and sciences are different in both aspect and purpose, we nonetheless find that the processes used by artists and scientists to forge innovations are extremely similar. In fact, an unexpected proportion of scientists are amateur and sometimes even professional artists, and vice versa. Contrary to Snow’s two-cultures thesis, the arts and sciences are part of one, common creative culture largely composed of polymathic individuals. -

In our times both the works and the biographies of the Nobel laureates {NL} are accessible to empirical study. Their biographic materials portray distinguished personalities as real people with their faults and weaknesses. Such biographic studies become available mainly because in our epoch the quality and quantity of psychological observation have increased dramatically. By opening the books of their own life stories, the Nobel laureates invite us to witness the circumstances of their growth and to gain a better understanding of the limits of free will and of "Zeitgeist" dynamics. Assuming that poetry is an even more valuable source of authors' attitudes towards life than their respective autobiographies, the Nobel laureates in Literature who were awarded their prizes explicitly for poetry, constitute the most informative group for biographical research. Furthermore, according to Alfred Nobel's will (1895), the poetry of the laureates should be also "the most outstanding work in an ideal direction." The ability of such laureates to inspire entire societies makes them attractive for historical research. This paper is a pioneer venture into temporology. It seamlessly blends three different types of time: calendar times, the primordial cycles of the elements and the factor of birth-time (the Theta-factor). To make this fusion possible, this essay opens with a brief Introduction written in four parts, each part being a thumbnail sketch of one of the following basic temporal aspects: definitions of time, the four elements, the Effect of the Celestial Twins (ECT) and the model of the Phoenix Clock. -

IMAGINE ALL THE PEOPLE Literature, Society and Cross-National Variation in Education Systems By Cathie Jo Martin Boston University [email protected] (January 2017) INTRODUCTION In light of their nineteenth-century political economies, one wonders why Denmark became a leader in public, mass primary education (1814) and secondary vocational training, while Britain created public mass schooling in 1870 and chose a unitary academic track for secondary education. If industrialization drives educational development, Britain (leading the industrial revolution) should be an innovator in both early mass education and vocational training for skilled workers (Wilensky; Busemeyer and Trampusch), and backward, rural Denmark should be the laggard. Nation-building and social democratic impulses might instead be responsible for small, vulnerable Denmark’s early educational initiatives (Boli et. al.), yet the considerable diversity of Danish education (with its large vocational track) seems at odds with mandates of a universalistic, social democratic welfare state (Telhaug et. Al. 2006, Glenn, 2007). This paper sheds light on the peculiarities of education system development in Britain and Denmark by looking at the association between culture (as manifested in literature) and education policy. I argue that stark cultural differences about the purpose of education and the role of the individual in society mediated British and Danish responses to requisites for expanded education (e.g. nation-building, industrialization, and globalization). Education serves multiple purposes: schooling both develops skills and cultivates citizenship. Moreover, access to an education may be posited as an individual right and mechanism for cultivating individual capacities (for employment or self-growth), or as a collective responsibility to train citizens for societal needs (associated with economy, stability and international security). -

Jewish Nobel Prize Laureates
Jewish Nobel Prize Laureates In December 1902, the first Nobel Prize was awarded in Stockholm to Wilhelm Roentgen, the discoverer of X-rays. Alfred Nobel (1833-96), a Swedish industrialist and inventor of dynamite, had bequeathed a $9 million endowment to fund significant cash prizes ($40,000 in 1901, about $1 million today) to those individuals who had made the most important contributions in five domains (Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature and Peace); the sixth, in "Economic Sciences," was added in 1969. Nobel could hardly have imagined the almost mythic status that would accrue to the laureates. From the start "The Prize" became one of the most sought-after awards in the world, and eventually the yardstick against which other prizes and recognition were to be measured. Certainly the roster of Nobel laureates includes many of the most famous names of the 20th century: Marie Curie, Albert Einstein, Mother Teresa, Winston Churchill, Albert Camus, Boris Pasternak, Albert Schweitzer, the Dalai Lama and many others. Nobel Prizes have been awarded to approximately 850 laureates of whom at least 177 of them are/were Jewish although Jews comprise less than 0.2% of the world's population. In the 20th century, Jews, more than any other minority, ethnic or cultural, have been recipients of the Nobel Prize. How to account for Jewish proficiency at winning Nobel’s? It's certainly not because Jews do the judging. All but one of the Nobel’s are awarded by Swedish institutions (the Peace Prize by Norway). The standard answer is that the premium placed on study and scholarship in Jewish culture inclines Jews toward more education, which in turn makes a higher proportion of them "Nobel-eligible" than in the larger population. -

‘Living So Far from Words’: Intertextuality, Trauma and the Post-Shoah World in Medbh McGuckian’s Blaris Moor Shane Alcobia-Murphy In Unoriginal Genius, Marjorie Perloff argues that ‘citationality, with its dialectic of removal and graft, disjunction and conjunction, its interpenetration of origin and destruction, is central to twenty-first century poetics’.1 The ‘unoriginal genius’ is both the maker and unmaker of texts: while s/he participates in the active critique, revision, subversion and/or appropriation of past works, such a de-creative praxis is balanced and motivated by the desire to create new forms. Thus, the adoption of the quoting text as a model of cultural production is now not confined to a Dadaist abjuration of the representational possibilities of art, nor is it simply the attempted embodiment of the chaos of modernity within a non- signifying practice; rather, it is also an attempt to be original. But Perloff’s provocative title reminds us that, within poststructuralist thinking, it is acutely difficult to attribute ‘originality’ to any author since their cultural products are, by definition, intertextual: they are ‘woven entirely with citations, references, echoes, cultural languages […] antecedent or contemporary, which cut across it through and through in a vast stereophony’.2 Roland Barthes argues, for instance, that all words accrue meanings and connotations, and that a text is merely ‘a fabrication of quotations, resulting from a thousand sources of culture’.3 Yet the ‘unoriginal genius’ is not cabined and confined to some inhibitive prison-house of language: intertextuality, for them, is not just the inherent condition of writing; rather, it is also a fully embraced practice. -

Danish Nobel Laureates in Literature With Special Emphasis on Johannes V. Jensen by Erik M. Christensen Religion, Philosophy, and Art are related. Sometimes more than other. They are so much in family, in fact, that they are able to become one. This may even happen without being intended or even realized, but we also have, in Western civilization, instances where the artist very clearly meant his work to represent a unity of Religion, Philosophy, and Art. The greatest known instance of this is, of course, Dante Alighieri's poem La Divina Commedia (ca. 1307- 1320), the story of his wandering through Purgatory, down to Hell, and up to Paradise where his ideal love for Beatrice allows him to unite with God. If you are the reader Dante intended you to be, you will at the end of The Divine Comedy be convinced that Religion, Philosophy, and Art are very much in family and certainly able to become one. -

Society of Young Nigerian Writers Jeppe Aakjaer Jeppe Aakjaer (1866-1930), Danish writer, a leading regional and social-protest author from the Jutland peninsula, who is read today as a lyric poet rather than as a novelist. The novel Vredens børn, et tyendes saga (Children of Wrath: A Hired Man's Saga, 1904) helped bring some small improvements for rural workers. Rugens sange (Songs of the Rye, 1906) is his best-known work. He became known as the Danish Burns because his work somewhat resembles that of the Scottish poet Robert Burns. Hans Christian Andersen Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875), Danish author, whose fairy tales have been translated into more than 80 languages and have inspired plays, ballets, films, and works of sculpture and painting. Born in Odense, he suffered from poverty and neglect during his childhood, and when he was 14 years of age he ran away to Copenhagen. There he worked for Jonas Collin, director of the Royal Theater, until Collin raised money to provide him with an education. Andersen had poetry and prose published and plays produced beginning in 1822. His first success was “A Walk from Holmen's Canal to the East Point of the Island of Amager in the Years 1828 and 1829” (1829), a fantastic tale imitative of the style of German writer E.T.A. Hoffmann. Andersen's first novel, The Improviser (1835; translated 1845), was well received by critics, and his first book of fairy tales was published the same year. Andersen traveled extensively in Europe, Asia, and Africa and continued to write novels, plays, and travel books, but it was his more than 150 stories for children that established him as one of the great figures of world literature.
