COUNTRY REPORT ON ANIMAL GENETIC RESOURCES OF INDIA DEPARTMENT OF ANIMAL HUSBANDRY & DAIRYING MINISTRY OF AGRICUCLTURE GOVERNMENT OF INDIA Preparation of Country Report on AnGR Training for the preparation of Country Report was provided by the FAO (at Bangkok) to three Scientists viz. Dr. D K Sadana, PS from NBAGR, Dr. A. Batobyal, Jt. Commissioner, GOI and Dr. Vineet Bhasin, Sr. Scientist, ICAR. The NBAGR, Karnal was identified as the Nodal Institute to prepare the draft Country Report. The scientists of the Animal Genetic Resources Division prepared answers to the background questions, collected livestock data from various sources, examined, discussed and compiled the received input. Chief Nodal Officers of the five regions of the country (North, West, South, East and North East) were identified to coordinate the collection of information from the Nodal Officers (Data contributors) from different states of the Country. Three national workshops were organized, two at NBAGR, Karnal and one at UAS, Bangalore.In the National Workshops, the Nodal Officers from different states were given training and guidelines for answering the background questions. Subsequently, the Draft Report was updated with the details received from nodal officers and other data contributors. Despite the significance in decision making process especially for rational resource allocation, recognition of actual burden of dengue, the vulnerability of dengue has been limitedly addressed in many countries including Sri Lanka, due to some in a holistic methodology. Methods: A total of 42 variables (entomological, epidemiological, meteorological parameters, landuse practices and socio-demographic data) of all the 38 Medical Officer of Health (MOH) areas in the districts of Colombo and Kandy were considered as candidate variables for composite index based vulnerability assessment. The Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was used in selecting and setting the weight for each indicator. -

Siddiky* SAARC Agriculture Centre, BARC Complex, Farmgate, Dhaka-1215, Bangladesh ABSTRACT South Asian region is blessed with high diversity of dairy animal genetic resources. The role of dairying in livelihood, nutritional and food security of millions of people living in south Asian countries has been well understood. Among livestock, dairy animal assumes much significance since dairying is acknowledged as the major instrument in bringing about socio-economic transformation of rural poor and sustainable rural development. Dairying provides a stable, year-round income, which is an important economic incentive for the small holder farmers. Dairying directly enhance the household income by providing high value output from low value input besides acting as wealth for future investment. This region is home for about 745 Million of Dairy Animal Populations that accounts 21% of global daily animals. Besides, 25% of world‘s cattle and buffaloes, 15% of the sheep and goat, and 7% of the camel are inhabitant in the region. South Asia is currently producing about 200 Million tons of milk that accounts around 20% of global production despite low productivity of the dairy animals. This study focused the data related to dairying in different countries of the region and situation analyses of input and delivery system for identifying the points of interventions to boosting dairy production and processing. In gist, this study documented the facts about the current dairying in the south Asia and envisages the priorities to make the dairying sustainable and more productive with the aim to cater the inclusive development of dairying in the region. -

The current study aimed to evaluate the climate change induced socio-economic vulnerability of local communities to dengue in Colombo and Kandy districts of Sri Lanka. Methods: A total of 42 variables (entomological, epidemiological, meteorological parameters, land-use practices and socio-demographic data) of all the 38 Medical Officer of Health (MOH) areas in the districts of Colombo and Kandy were considered as candidate variables for a composite index based vulnerability assessment. The Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was used in selecting and setting the weight for each indicator. Exposure, Sensitivity, Adaptive Capacity and Vulnerability of all MOH areas for dengue were calculated using the composite index approach recommended by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Results: Out of 42 candidate variables, only 23 parameters (Exposure Index: six variables; Sensitivity Index: 11 variables; Adaptive Capacity Index: six variables) were selected as indicators to assess climate change vulnerability to dengue. Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) MOH area denoted the highest values for exposure (0.89: exceptionally high exposure), sensitivity (0.86: exceptionally high sensitivity) in Colombo, while Kandy Municipal Council (KMC) area reported the highest exposure (0.79: high exposure) and sensitivity (0.77: high sensitivity) in Kandy. -

THESIS ON THE HISTORY OF CEYLON TEA MONTE HOLSINGER (2002) History of Ceylon Tea is delighted to present an essay on the history of Ceylon tea written by former tea planter Monte Holsinger as a thesis for his Bachelor’s Degree in Management in 2002. This well-researched document comprehensively captures the history of the plantation industry while also touching on the country’s colonial past. HOCT is indeed grateful to Mr Holsinger for making it available to us and our readership. PART ONE 1 OUTLINE OF RECENT HISTORY The Island of Sri Lanka has a heritage rich in culture and rife with conflict. The aborigines of the country bear no relevance in this study and are of more interest to anthropologists and paleontologists, who have postulated that Homo sapiens possibly first set foot on the isle about 500,000 years ago. The more recent history, which is pertinent to this paper, is unfortunately, a combination of myth, legend, folklore, epigraphics and historical records. The historical records do not necessarily embody an unbiased or objective narration of historical events, and may well reflect the historian’s perception, or even be a valediction of the kings and rulers of a given period. Much research has however been done by the students of history in their assiduous search for the truth, and we are the beneficiaries of their diligence. We can now safely assume that these scholarly dissertations have unraveled the past with reasonable accuracy, and we can now rely on this historical perspective on which to predicate this thesis. Sri Lanka, known as Seilan or Ceylon in the days gone by, occupies an enviable geographic location.
