This specific lesson will address the representation of diversity in the children’s educational television show Sesame Street. Overview More than ever, very young children are watching television. They are watching on the weekends, after school, and sometimes even in the classroom as a means of learning. If television is going to play such an important part in the lives of children, it is imperative that parents and educators highlight the television shows that will be the most beneficial for their children to watch. Ideally television shows geared toward young children would be as educational as possible, both in the traditional school sense as well as culturally educational. Since the show’s inception, the creators of Sesame Street have strived to provide both kinds of education. Sesame Street first aired in 1969. The creators of the show developed Sesame Street with the goal of improving school readiness in urban socioeconomically disadvantaged children. Segments highlighted the introduction of letters of the alphabet, numbers, and shapes and colors. But the show was also designed to promote positive images of diversity. The show’s creators hoped that positive media representations of racial and ethnic minorities would not only boost cultural pride and self-confidence, but they would also enhance awareness and understanding.

The original concept of the show was simple: using television to teach young children. Specifically, the show’s creators wanted to help young, disadvantaged children who were at risk of struggling in school. Sesame Street has evolved over these fifty years, but the show’s core objective remains the same. Though income inequality has remained a significant problem in the United States, Sesame Street remains steadfast in providing equal educational opportunities for children.     Why the Cookie Monster should never become the Veggie Monster… A Classical Argument “Can you tell me how to get, how to get to Sesame Street?” Hearing the lyrics and the tune seems nostalgic and reminds us of simpler times: our childhood. While Sesame Street may only be intended for three or four year olds, Jim Henson’s ragtag group of puppets has made a mark on America’s pop culture over the years. We see fashion retailers selling t-shirts with the face of Elmo or Cookie Monster upon them and we have chuckled at the various parody videos of Sesame Street characters on YouTube. However, after such a long legacy, can you imagine if our beloved characters were changed? What if your own child was subjected to the image of Veggie Monster instead of Cookie Monster? In light of recent struggle to fight childhood obesity, many have advocated to change the Cookie Monster character to the Veggie Monster in order to encourage more children to eat healthy. I propose, while their intention may be well mannered, Sesame Street, and more specifically Cookie Monster is not the right avenue to express these opinions and the Cookie Monster should remain the Cookie Monster. While we have only discussed the general popularity of Sesame Street, we have yet to even discuss Cookie Monster, himself.
