Percorsi interpretativi e scelte traduttive di una ‘parola fantasma’ Marina Buzzoni (Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia, Italia) Abstract Under the most common interpretation, Old English hwæt, the very first word of the epic poem Beowulf, is to be considered as an interjection (e.g. Lo!). After discussing two theoretical posi- tions that depart from this traditional assumption, i.e. the exclamative hypothesis (Walkden 2013) and the pragmatic marker hypothesis (Brinton 1996, 2017), this study aims at taking into considera- tion the hermeneutical and translational implications of the aforementioned theories. It will also be claimed that a virtuous synthesis of the two positions is not impossible; therefore, new translations of ancient texts are called for, in which such synthesis can be pursued. Taking as its primary starting point Anglo-Saxon England the evidence of the Old English verse tradition, supported by linguistic and archaeological evidence and contemporary compar- ative material, the paper draws together contemporaneous and modern insights into the nature of feasting as a social medium. The roles of the ‘lord’ and ‘lady’ as community leaders are examined, with particular regard to their position at the epicentre of radiating social relationships. Finally, the inverse importance of the mead- hall as a declining social institution and a developing literary construct is addressed. Ó 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. The term ‘mead-hall’ is no longer current among English-speakers; it is used here as a shorthand notation for the Germanic customs and observances surrounding the consumption and distribution of food and drink in a ceremonial setting, the giving and receiving of honorifics and rewards, and the establishment of a communal identity expressed through formal relationships to a pair of individuals whom we may call the ‘lord’ and ‘lady’. It further relates to a set of traditions concerning hospitality offered to strangers, informal entertainment and the maintenance of wider social relationships. -

Sample Answer: Grendel’s Mother takes revenge on the Thanes of Heorot because they did not pay the wergild for Grendel’s death, which is usually done to prevent a retaliation. After Beowulf mortally wounds Grendel, the monster returns to returns to his lair to die, presumably in front of his mother, which sends her into a vengeful rage. Amodio I Affective criticism, as it has been practiced over the last few years, has come to focus upon the reader’s (or audience’s) subjective experience of a given literary work.1 Rather than examining the text qua object, affective criticism (like all subjective criticism) has abandoned the objectivism and textual reification which lay at the heart of the New Critical enterprise, striving instead to lead “one away from the ‘thing itself’ in all its solidity to the inchoate impressions of a variable and various reader” (Fish 1980:42).2 Shifting the critical focus away from the text to the reader has engendered 1 Iser, one of the leading proponents of reader-based inquiry, offers the following succinct statement of the logic underlying his and related approaches: “[a]s a literary text can only produce a response when it is read, it is virtually impossible to describe this response without also analyzing the reading process” (1978:ix). Iser’s emphasis on the reader’s role and on the constitutive and enabling functions inherent in the act of reading are shared by many other modern theorists despite their radical differences in methodologies, aims, and conclusions. See especially Culler (1982:17-83), and the collections edited by Tompkins (1980) and Suleiman and Crosman (1980). 2 The New Criticism has generally warned against inscribing an idiosyncratic, historically and culturally determined reader into a literary text because doing so would lead to subjectivism and ultimately to interpretative chaos. -

Bartz: Beowulf: God, Men, and Monster Emily Bartz Beowulf: God, Men, and Monsters The central conflict of the Anglo-Saxon epic poem Beowulf is the struggle between the decentralising and supernatural ways of the ancients (Shield Sheafson, Grendel, and Grendel‟s Mother) and the centralising and corporeal values of the modern heroes (Hrothgar, Beowulf, and Wiglaf.) The poet traces a definitive move away from the ancient‟s pagan heroic values to his own Christian heroic values. However, as in the poet‟s contemporary culture, certain pagan traditions, such as familial fidelity, persist in Beowulf due to their compatibility with Christian culture. The poet‟s audience, the Anglo-Saxons, honoured their pagan ancestors through story telling. The Christian leadership discouraged story telling since the Anglo-Saxons‟ ancestors were pagans and thus beyond salvation. -

The sword is the supreme weapon of warriors in the poem. A distinctive characteristic of the sword, unlike other weapons and armour, is its frequent personification: exceptional swords are called by their own personal names, almost as if they were agents. The fact that Hrunting and Naegling fail to help Beowulf in battle is a further reason to examine the role of swords. Every occasion in which a sword appears in Beowulf has been examined and categorised, according to its function. The chief functions of the sword are the sword-as-treasure, the sword-as-gift, the sword as battle weapon, and the kin-killing sword. The two former are symbolic functions of the sword-motif, in which they represent honour and heroic deeds as well as their value in the world. The practical functions of the sword in battle are presented in the latter two roles, which emphasise rather the negative side of the sword in the poem: the instrument and token of revenge, and the wicked use of the sword in kin-killing. The kin-killing theme is displayed throughout the poem in many family feuds. The practical function of the sword in battle links it to the kin-killing theme, especially after the repeated mention of Cain early in the poem. -

In “Old English Ecologies,” I apply the relatively new critical perspectives of ecocriticism and place- based study to the Anglo-Saxon canon to reveal the depth and changeability in these literary landscapes.
