MODULE - V Indian Painting Painting, Performing Arts and Architecture Notes 11 INDIAN PAINTING hen you go to the market or to a museum you will find many paintings, wall hangings or work done on terracotta. Do you know that these paintings have Wtheir origin in ouir ancient past. They depict the life and customs followed by the people of those times. They also show how the kings and queens dressed or how the courtiers sat in the royal assembly. Literacy records which had a direct bearing on the art of painting show that from very early times painting both secular and religious were considered an important form of artistic expression and was practised. This need for expression is a very basic requirement for human survival and it has taken various forms since prehistoric times. Painting is one such form with which you may have been acquainted in some way or the other. Indian painting is the result of the synthesis of various traditions and its development is an ongoing process. However while adapting to new styles, Indian painting has maintained its distinct character. “Modern Indian painting in thus a reflection of the intermingling of a rich traditional inheritance with modern trends and ideas”. The attention to the development of tourist facilities was given from the 3 Plan Period onwards, Early in 1950 the executive part of tourism organization came into being with the appointment of a Tourist Development Officer. He was assisted by some of the existing staff of Home (Transport) Department. In 1960-61 the Assistant Secretary of the Home (Transport) Department was made Director of Tourism ex-officio and a few posts of assistants were created. Subsequently, the Secretary of Home (Transport) Department became the ex-officio Director of Tourism. Two Regional Tourist Offices - one for the five North Bengal districts i.e., Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, West Dinajpur and Maida with headquarters at Darjeeling and the other for the remaining districts of the State with headquarters at Kolkata were also set up. The Regional Office at KolKata started functioning on 2nd September, 1961. The Regional Office in Darjeeling was started on 1st May, 1962 by taking over the existing Tourist Bureau of the Govt. of India at Darjeeling. The tourism wing of the Home (Transport) Department was transferred to the Development Department on 1st September, 1962. Development. Commissioner then became the ex-officio Director of Tourism. Subsequently, in view of the increasing activities of tourism organization it was transformed into a full-fledged Tourism Department, though the Secretary of the Forest Department functioned as the Secretary, Tourism Department. -

ABSTRACT Gitanjali written by Rabindranath Tagore (and the English translation of the Corresponding Author: Bengali poems in it, written in 1921) was awarded the Novel Prize in 1913. He Dr. Tinni Dutta called it Song Offerings. Some of the songs were taken from „Naivedya‟, „Kheya‟, „Gitimalya‟ and other selections of his poem. That is, the Supreme Being is complete only together with the soul of the devetee. He makes the mere mortal infinite and chooses to do so for His own sake, this could be just could be a faint echo of the AdvaitaPhilosophy.Tagore‟s songs in Gitanjali express the distinctive method of philosophy…The poet is nothing more than a flute (merely a reed) which plays His timeless melodies . His heart overflows with happiness at His touch that is intangible Tagore‟s song in Gitanjali are analyzed in this ways - content analysis and dynamic analysis. Methodology of his present study were corroborated with earlier findings: Halder (1918), Basu (1988), Sanyal (1992) Dutta (2002).In conclusion it could be stated that Tagore‟s songs in Gitanjali are intermingled with beauty and eternity.A frequently used theme in Tagore‟s poetry, is repeated in the song,„Tumiaamaydekechhilechhutir‟„When the day of fulfillment came I knew nothing for I was absent –minded‟, He mourns the loss. This strain of thinking is found also in an exquisite poem written in old age. -

D. Scholar on the Films of Rituparno Ghosh. His area of interest includes Gender and Queer Studies, Nationalism, Postcolonialism, Postmodernism and Film Studies. He has already published some articles in prestigious national and international journals. Abstract The paper would focus on the cultural nationalism that the Indians gave birth to in response to the British colonialism and Ghosh’s critique of such a parochial nationalism. The paper seeks to expose the irony of India’s cultural nationalism which is based on the phallogocentric principle informed by the Western Enlightenment logic. It will be shown how the idea of a modern India was in fact guided by the heteronormative logic of the British masters. India’s postcolonial politics was necessarily patriarchal and hence its nationalist agenda was deeply gendered. Exposing the marginalised status of the gendered and sexual subalterns in India’s grand narrative of nationalism, Ghosh questions the compatible comradeship of the “imagined communities”. He has published research articles in various national and international journals. His preferred literary areas include African literature, Literary Theory and Indian English Literature. At present, he is working on his PhD on Ngugi Wa Thiong’o. Abstract This paper is a critical investigation of the socio-political situation of the Indianised spectral king (Bhooter Raja) in Satyajit Ray’s Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne (1969) and also of Ray’s handling of the marginalised in the movie. The movie is read as an allegory of postcolonial struggle told from a regional perspective. Ray’s portrayal of the Bhooter Raja (The king of ghosts) is typically Indianised. He deliberately deviates from the colonial tradition of Gothic fiction and customised Upendrakishore’s tale as a postcolonial narrative. Since its inception this method of storytelling and communicating has changed its medium of transmission but not its manner of storytelling. For ages, oral tradition has been a medium of transmission of these stories and culture but with modernization, the medium changed to print, electronic, and now digital media. These folktales do not represent mere stories; but communicate the varied culture, tradition, rituals, history and much other vital information reflecting the timeline of various communities. Serving as an active agent of both information and entertainment at the community level for so many years today, there arises an immediate need to preserve this form of storytelling - Folktales, especially in the context of its presentation has witnessed a change in recent times. Animation being the latest medium of entertainment, folktales can also be narrated in the form of animation that will also help preserve the stories in animated form for future generations. -

INDIAN TOURISM INFRASTRUCTURE - Investment Opportunities & Challenges 3 4 INDIAN TOURISM INFRASTRUCTURE - Investment Opportunities & Challenges FOREWORD Travel and tourism, the largest service industry in India was worth US$234bn in 2018 – a 19% year- on-year increase – the third largest foreign exchange earner for India with a 17.9% growth in Foreign Exchange Earnings (in Rupee Terms) in March 2018 over March 2017. According to The World Travel and Tourism Council, tourism generated ₹16.91 lakh crore (US$240 billion) or 9.2% of India’s GDP in 2018 and supported 42.673 million jobs, 8.1% of its total employment. The sector is predicted to grow at an annual rate of 6.9% to ₹32.05 lakh crore (US$460 billion) by 2028 (9.9% of GDP). The Ministry has been actively working towards the development of quality tourism infrastructure at various tourist destinations and circuits in the States / Union Territories by sanctioning expenditure budgets across schemes like SWADESH DARSHAN and PRASHAD. The Ministry of Tourism has been actively promoting India as a 365 days tourist destination with the introduction of niche tourism products in the country like Cruise, Adventure, Medical, Wellness, Golf, Polo, MICE Tourism, Eco-tourism, Film Tourism, Sustainable Tourism, etc. to overcome ‘seasonality’ challenge in tourism. SETTING THE STAGE: A MATERIALIST SEMIOTIC ANALYSIS OF CONTEMPORARY BENGALI GROUP THEATRE FROM KOLKATA, INDIA by ARNAB BANERJI (Under the Direction of Farley Richmond) ABSTRACT This dissertation studies select performance examples from various group theatre companies in Kolkata, India during a fieldwork conducted in Kolkata between August 2012 and July 2013 using the materialist semiotic performance analysis. Research into Bengali group theatre has overlooked the effect of the conditions of production and reception on meaning making in theatre. Extant research focuses on the history of the group theatre, individuals, groups, and the socially conscious and political nature of this theatre. The unique nature of this theatre culture (or any other theatre culture) can only be understood fully if the conditions within which such theatre is produced and received studied along with the performance event itself. This dissertation is an attempt to fill this lacuna in Bengali group theatre scholarship. Materialist semiotic performance analysis serves as the theoretical framework for this study. The materialist semiotic performance analysis is a theoretical tool that examines the theatre event by locating it within definite material conditions of production and reception like organization, funding, training, availability of spaces and the public discourse on theatre. The data presented in this dissertation was gathered in Kolkata using: auto-ethnography, participant observation, sample survey, and archival research. The conditions of production and reception are each examined and presented in isolation followed by case studies. The case studies bring the elements studied in the preceding section together to demonstrate how they function together in a performance event. The studies represent the vast array of theatre in Kolkata and allow the findings from the second part of the dissertation to be tested across a variety of conditions of production and reception. -

(December 2011) Article-4 Bengali graphic novels for children-Sustaining an intangible heritage of storytelling traditions from oral to contemporary literature - Dr. Lopamudra Maitra Abstract The paper looks into graphic novels acting as an important part of preserving and sustaining a part of intangible heritage and a specific trend of socio-cultural traditions pertaining to children across the globe- the art of storytelling. In West Bengal, the art of storytelling for children sustains itself through time through various proverbs, anecdotes, rhymes and stories, handed down from generations and expressing more than mere words in oral tradition. Occupying a significant aspect of communication even in recent times, the publication and recent popularity of several graphic novels in Bengali have reintroduced several of these stories from oral tradition yet again with the help of popular culture. Along with the plethora of such stories from oral tradition is the recent range of literature for children in Bengali. Thus, the variety of graphic novels include various stories which were collected and published from oral traditions nearly a hundred years back, to the most recent creations of printed literature for children. The conceptions embrace the efforts of stalwarts of Bengali children’s literature, including, Dakkhinaranjan Mitra Majumdar, Upendrakishore Raychowdhury, Sukumar Ray, Satyajit Ray, Shibram Chakraborty, Narayan Gangopadhyay, Premendra Mitra and others. Exploring a significant part of the intangible heritage of mankind- the art of storytelling for children survives across the globe in varied and myriad hues of expression- with two significant contributors occupying centre stage- the narrator and the listener.
