ABSTRACT Supporters of mega-sporting events such as the World Cup and Olympics claim that these events attract hoards of wealthy visitors and lead to lasting economic benefits for the host regions. For this reason, cities and countries compete vigorously for the right to stage these spectacles. Recently, developing countries have become increasingly vocal in demanding that they get the right to share in the economic benefits of these international games. China, for example, has been awarded the 2008 Summer Olympics, and an African nation seems destined to host the 2010 World Cup. The specialized infrastructure and operating expenses required to host these events, however, can be extremely costly, and it is not at all clear that either the long or short-term benefits of the games are anywhere nearly large enough to cover these costs. This paper reviews other researchers’ as well as our own previous work on mega-sporting events such as the Super Bowl and World Series as well as international events like the World Cup and Olympics.

    2010 Year in Review From the General Manger UTA marked its 40th anniversary in 2010. I am honored to have been part of UTA for more than 30 of those years. I remember when we were a small, 67-bus operation with one garage. Now we are a vibrant, multimodal transit system serving six counties with 118 bus routes, 20 miles of TRAX light rail lines and 44 miles of FrontRunner commuter rail. Despite the current economic challenges, I have never been more excited about our future. We're working hard to place a major transit stop within reach of every resident in the counties we serve. We are even closer to that goal with the FrontLines 2015 program, which will add 25 miles of light rail in Salt Lake County and 45 miles of FrontRunner commuter rail in Salt Lake and Utah counties. In 2010 we completed more than half of the FrontLines 2015 program and announced the openings of the Mid-Jordan and West Valley TRAX lines for summer 2011. We're on track to complete the rest of the lines in this massive project by 2015, as promised. None of these major projects would be possible without the support of community members along the Wasatch Front. So as we celebrate 40 years of service, remember our best years are yet to come.     Directions The Matheson Courthouse is at 450 South State Street. If you take Trax, Courthouse Station is the closest stop on the N/S Line. From there the courthouse west entrance is about ½ block. On the University Line, the closest stop is Library Station, about 1½ blocks from the east entrance. If you drive, we can validate your parking if you park at the courthouse. Public parking (Level P2) is accessible only from 400 South, eastbound. If you are already west of the Courthouse, drive eastbound on 400 South and turn right into the driveway about mid-block between Main and State. (Don't go to the parking garage for the old First Security Building.) If you are east of the Courthouse, take 500 South to Main Street, turn right, and then right again on 400 South. Enter the driveway as above. Bear to the left as you descend the driveway. A deputy sheriff might ask you your business at the courthouse. After parking, take the elevator to the first floor rotunda. The courthouse has airport-type security, so leave whatever might be considered a weapon in your car. We are in the Judicial Council Room in Suite N31. To get to Suite N31, take the elevator to the 3d Floor. The elevators are near the east entrance to the building. Then turn left as you exit the elevator.     The Impact of the Olympic Games on Employment Growth: A Synthetic Control Approach Candon Johnson* West Virginia University June 22, 2020 Abstract The Olympics Games stand as the largest sporting event in the world. The Games include approximately 200 countries during the Summer Olympic Games and 90 countries competing in the Winter Games, each occurring once every four years. Potential host cities fiercely compete to host the games under the guise of economic prosperity. Event promoters claim substantial economic benefits, such as employment growth, to be had from hosting these costly games. This paper examines the impacts of the Olympic Games on employment growth rates using a synthetic control approach. Results show transitory increases in employment growth rates following a county being awarded the Olympic Games in Fulton County, GA and Salt Lake County, UT. Results also indicate a decrease in employment growth rate in Los Angeles County, CA due to being awarded the 1984 Summer Olympic Games.     2011 Year in Review From the General Manger The past year has been momentous for the Utah Transit Authority. With a dedicated and talented team and strong community participation, we marked a year of progress and transformation. We simultaneously opened two new light rail lines ahead of schedule and under budget in August, while increasing system-wide ridership to more than 41 million trips—a six percent increase relative to the previous year. In conjunction with the new TRAX openings, we modified bus services. Community input played a critical role as we planned our bus service transitions. As we plan for the future, the public remains the richest resource for research and needs analyses. We will continue to invite public participation as we prepare the openings of our newest FrontLines 2015 projects. This past year we also renewed our pledge to keep safety our highest priority, as we will every year. We work hard to plan and engineer the safest possible transportation systems. To supplement our engineering, we will continue to do our utmost to educate and enforce measures designed to keep our riders and the public safe. It remains our number-one priority. For example, working with the international organization Operation Lifesaver, UTA team members will be seen throughout our service areas at schools, businesses and community groups talking about how to be safe around trains. We will remember 2011 as an incredible year. With hard work and continued community support, 2012 will be just as transformative and memorable. On the cost side, there are three major categories: general infrastructure such as transportation and housing to accommodate athletes and fans; specific sports infrastructure required for competition venues; and operational costs, including general administration as well as the opening and closing ceremony and security. Three major categories of benefits also exist: the short-run benefits of tourist spending during the Games; the long-run benefits or the "Olympic legacy" which might include improvements in infrastructure and increased trade, foreign investment, or tourism after the Games; and intangible benefits such as the "feel-good effect" or civic pride. Each of these costs and benefits will be addressed in turn, but the overwhelming conclusion is that in most cases the Olympics are a money-losing proposition for host cities; they result in positive net benefits only under very specific and unusual circumstances.

Airport Information The closest airport is the Salt Lake City (SLC) International Airport, and the Utah Department of Health Cannon Building (Cannon Building) is located 5.8 miles from the Airport. Transportation to/from Hotel For the detailed information, please visit the Airport’s website about the ground transportation. Taxi rates within SLC limit are flat rate. From SLC Airport to the hotels listed on this ‘guide book’ should be $25 for 1-2 passengers (as of May 2017). Please note: since 2015, taxi fare is not regulated in Utah, however, Salt Lake City has set a flat rate fare system within the Salt Lake City limits. The Airport website recommends negotiating the price before you leave the airport to avoid any misunderstanding. Utah Transit Authority (UTA) provides TRAX services that runs every 15 minutes from the Airport to Salt Lake City Downtown area for $2.50 one way. The Cannon Building is located between the Airport and Salt Lake City Downtown on the Green Line (see last TRAX Green Line page). It takes about 20 minutes (including 11 minutes walking) from the Airport using the TRAX.
