Beekeeping in the Mediterranean from Antiquity Until Today: Historical Findings and Current Issues Book of Abstracts SYROS- GREECE 9-11 October, 2014 "Beekeeping in the Mediterranean from antiquity until today: historical findings and current issues" 2 "Beekeeping in the Mediterranean from antiquity until today: historical findings and current issues" 3 "Beekeeping in the Mediterranean from antiquity until today: historical findings and current issues" 4 "Beekeeping in the Mediterranean from antiquity until today: historical findings and current issues" Dear friends and colleagues, It is our pleasure and honor to welcome you to this unique Beekeeping Symposium taking place for the first time in the Cyclades, on the beautiful and historic island of Syros with a live link with the islands Andros, Milos, Mykonos, Paros, Naxos, Santorini and Tinos. The very theme of the Symposium is innovative and given the versatile contributions from Greek and international speakers which we expect to give rise to a productive discourse, we believe that the historical practice of beekeeping will help us better understand and cope more effectively with the problems of the present and expectations for the future. Thank you for joining us in this three-day creative journey from the past to the present to the future of beekeeping in the Mediterranean, which we hope will assist in a better understanding of this area and business sector toward the overall benefit of local economic and social development. While still a young woman, but already an established scientist and mathematician, she developed an interest in bees. For sixty years she tried to gather everything that had been written on bees, bee science and beekeeping and set about making this information available to everyone through the books she wrote and the journals she edited. In 1986 she visited the countries of the eastern Mediterranean including the island of Crete. In 1996 she returned again to Greece and went on to visit Turkey and Israel. She was particularly interested in traditional beekeeping and developed theories as to how beekeeping techniques were developed and transmitted around the Ancient World. Her research was based on: Study of excavated material Written texts from the writers of Antiquity through to more modern times Comparison of traditional beekeeping methods with what is currently practiced Her work led to make links in beekeeping methods from Scilly to Turkey, Greece to Northern India, Egypt to the Greek Islands. 6 "Beekeeping in the Mediterranean from antiquity until today: historical findings and current issues" Beekeeping in Turkey-Past to Present Irfan Kandemir Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, Ankara University-TURKEY, [email protected] Turkey is on the intersection of three continents and also on the way of two important past path namely Spice and Silk Road thus played a very important role bridging the Asia, Europe and Africa. Indeed Turkey also the place where very important civilizations were established like Romans, Hittites, Byzantines, Ottoman Empire and finally Turkish Republic. Covering all of these civilizations beekeeping can be divided into three main periods as recognized by archeological findings, written laws of Ottomans and the present period of new Republic. Although the previous findings in archeology and in the Ottoman period are scarce, the present period has lots of information regarding the beekeeping in Turkey. Archeological evidences came from the excavations during Hittites in two sites in Turkey. Comb figures on the walls and the buzzing bees on the carpets are the signs of beekeeping in that area. In Ottoman Empire period although there is not much direct evidence of beekeeping but there are several laws attributable to beekeeping. All of these laws are due to managing the taxation and prevention of theft incidences in Ottoman Empires. The third new period is after the establishment of Turkish Republic. However this latter section can be divided into two parts before Frederick Simon Bodenheimer and after. Modernization and the scientific beekeeping started after the second half and Turkey became one of the main beekeeping geography in the Middle East and the business is still growing. This work aimed to highlight the main developments in Turkish Beekeeping with pictorial presentation. 7 "Beekeeping in the Mediterranean from antiquity until today: historical findings and current issues" Beekeeping in the Land of the Pharaohs Stephen Petersen Beekeeping Consultant, Toklat Apiaries, Fairbanks, Alaska, USA 99712, [email protected] As one of the earliest “cradles of civilization”Egypt is well known for its’ ancient tombs and pyramids, but it is also known for its ancient beekeeping. Beekeeping (keeping honey bees in purpose-made containers) has been practiced in Egypt most likely since 3100 BC and perhaps as early as 5000 BC. Honey hunting (harvesting of honey from wild nests) was also practiced by ancient Egyptian in some of the oases. The race of bees indigenous to the Nile River is Apis mellifera lamarckii(Cockerell 1906) which today, especially in the Nile Delta, has been either genetically diluted or supplanted by imports principally Italian(A.m. ligustica) and Carniolans(A.m. carnica). The race of bees Apis mellifera lamarckii, hereafter referred to as Egyptian bees, are members of the African group which includes the races of the Sahel and central and southern Africa. They are well adapted to the narrow band of vegetation and environment along the banks of the Nile River. Ancient Egyptians

  • Surveillance, Subjectivity and Resistance at the Frontiers of Europe: a Materialist Analysis of the Greece-Turkey Borders
SURVEILLANCE, SUBJECTIVITY AND RESISTANCE AT THE FRONTIERS OF EUROPE: A MATERIALIST ANALYSIS OF THE GREECE-TURKEY BORDERS by Özgün Erdener Topak A thesis submitted to the Department of Sociology In conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada (November, 2014) Copyright © Özgün Erdener Topak, 2014 Abstract The Greece-Turkey borders have become one of the main points of undocumented entry into the European Union since 2009. The borders operate through complex elements: historical processes that shape their structure, ideologies that legitimize their violent existence, techniques and technologies that allow them to be practiced over migrants, and migrants complying with or resisting these structures, ideologies, techniques, and technologies. In order to provide a comprehensive analysis of these complex elements of the border, this dissertation critically engages with Althusser’s aleatory materialism, Foucault’s analytics of power and other complementary theories, and it analyzes the four aspects of the border in individual chapters. 1. Structural-decentred aspects of the border: The dissertation analyzes the historical material processes of colonialism and racism and the contemporary material processes of neoliberal globalization and post-politics that enable the EU borders to function as a decentred totality and to exclude certain peoples and not others. 2. Practical aspects of the border: The dissertation analyzes how the border operates in practice with specific surveillance technologies (such as radar systems and EUROSUR mechanisms at the borderzones) and techniques (such as everyday racist violence in urban contexts) that produce specific biopolitical effects on migrants. 3. Subjective aspects of the border: The dissertation analyzes how migrants develop diverse subjectivities when confronted by the border’s material violence, including stranger subjectivity, abject subjectivity, religious subjectivity, nomadic subjectivity, and dissident subjectivity.

  • Most Deadly Week of 2015 in the Aegean Sea, Alarm Phone Alerted to 100 Distress Cases Alarm Phone Weekly Report 26 October - 1 November 2015
Most deadly week of 2015 in the Aegean Sea, Alarm Phone alerted to 100 distress cases Alarm Phone Weekly Report 26 October - 1 November 2015 Between the 26th of October and the 1st of November, the Alarm Phone experienced the most emergency cases since its launch about one year ago. Within just 7 days we were alerted to a total of 100 cases of distress – all but one in the Aegean Sea – and were able to provide help and support to several thousands of travellers both on boats in distress at sea and to those who had stranded on several Greek islands. In doing so, we cooperated with and relied on the invaluable work of numerous volunteers, contact persons and support networks, who forwarded distress calls to us, provided us with information and helped us to follow-up on the many incidents. The sharp rise of alerts to the Alarm Phone also reflects the enormous increase of border crossings in the Aegean Sea, where more than 210.000 travellers have entered the European Union within the last month alone – about as many as in the entire year of 2014.1 Without any prospect of legal entry and with weather conditions becoming even worse in the weeks ahead, travellers in need of protection seek to use their last chances to enter Europe through dangerous and life-threatening sea crossings. As a fatal consequence, the past week was also the most deadly week of this year in the Aegean Sea, where since January more than 450 people lost their lives. Last week, in at least 7 fatal shipwrecks, more than 100 travellers drowned, including many children and infants, and many more are still missing.2 It was only due to the brave and self-sacrificing actions of Greek and Turkish fishermen and many lifesaving volunteers, who went to the sea to rescue women, children and men who went over-board, that hundreds of further deaths could be prevented.3 The Alarm Phone was alerted to and directly witnessed the dramatic shipwreck of a wooden boat with more than 300 travellers on board, which had capsized north of the Greek island of Lesvos on Wednesday the 28th of October.

  • Carrying Capacity As a Tool to Design Tourism Policy: Case Study for the Islands of Dodecanese
This paper is part of the Proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Sustainable Tourism (ST 2016) www.witconferences.com Carrying capacity as a tool to design tourism policy: case study for the islands of Dodecanese D. G. Prokopiou1, G. Mavridiglou2 & B. S. Tselentis1 1Department of Maritime Studies, University of Piraeus, Greece 2Technological Educational Institute of Peloponnesus, Greece Abstract The tourist industry is one of the most important economic activities in Greece. The country receives over 20 million visitors per year. In an era where tourism is one of the fastest growing sectors of developing countries the competition with existing tourism destinations, such as Greece, will intensify. Greece has enjoyed increasing numbers and revenues from tourism due to its unique environment – both natural and man-made – making it a high profile tourist destination. However, it is already clear that the uncontrolled growth of the industry can bring serious environmental and social problems, leading to a decline in the quality of the tourist product and services provided. Tourism development is related to environment and natural resources management. Carrying capacity indices are tools for evaluation of the impacts caused from tourism policies. In previous studies we produced a model of carrying capacity evaluation. In this study we go one step further using the results of our analysis for Greek Islands archipelago Dodecanese to design a sustainable tourism policy scenario. Keywords: tourism policy, tourism carrying capacity, tourism development at Rhodes Greek Island. 1 Basic principles of the EU tourism policy After the Agreement of Lisbon, for the first time the European Union, recognized tourism as a major economic activity with a broadly positive impact on economic growth and employment in Europe and tried for an EU tourism policy.
