In most cases, 'permanent' is synonymous with 'purpose-built'. However, some circuits were not purpose-built but actually started out as tempo- rary courses. Florida's Sebring International Raceway, for example, was originally a temporary airfield course, laid out over the runways of Hendricks Field. Likewise, Portland International Raceway in Oregon evolved from a street course. Both circuits are nowadays permanent facilities. The starting point for this list was the 2003 edition of Allan Brown's book "A History of America's Speedways: Past & Present". This is an indispensable reference work for which Allan cannot be praised enough. However, in the book the road courses are a bit buried between the vast number of ovals. Listing them separately gives a better overview. Also, I found the information in the book is not always accurate. It is an excellent basis for further research but the data should be treated with great care. I have done my best to present the most correct and accurate info in this file, although there may well be errors here and there. In general, there are three main types of American road courses. The most interesting are the 'pure' road courses which were built specifically for road racing.

  • Joliet, Illinois Community Profile Overnight Itinerary
Joliet, Illinois Community Profile Overnight Itinerary Full of history, culture, shopping and great sporting activities, Joliet is the place where everyone can play! Start exploring with a visit to the Joliet Area Historical Museum, Route 66 Welcome Center, Rialto Square Theatre, Chicagoland Speedway & Route 66 Raceway, Autobahn Country Club, or attend a Joliet Slammers Baseball game. Try your luck at Harrah's Joliet and Hollywood Casinos or maybe a round of golf at one of Joliet's four beautiful golf courses. Visit the Splash Station Water Park or do some shopping at the Louis Joliet Mall. The city's origins date back to 1833, but it wasn't until 1852 that it was incorporated officially as the city of Joliet. The origin of the name of the city is generally believed to be in part to honor explorer Louis Jolliet. It is the 3rd largest city in Illinois, with a population of 149,395 as of 2016. Joliet is part of the original 1926 alignment of Route 66 in Illinois. The Joliet alignment (most of which is currently designated as IL 53) remained until it was bypassed in 1940 with a new alignment that ran through Plainfield. Portions of Route 66 in Joliet also parallel the I&M Canal (Illinois & Michigan Canal State Trail) and the Lincoln Highway. The portion of Route 66 traveling from Joliet to Wilmington was placed on to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. ATTRACTIONS: Joliet Area Historical Museum and Route 66 Welcome Center Stop in to the Joliet Area Historical Museum and Route 66 Welcome Center to view the free, interactive Route 66 Experience exhibit, located at the crossroads of Route 66 and Lincoln Highway.

  • Dekalb Taylor Municipal Airport Organizational and Governance Study by Sixel Consulting Group, Inc
DATE: October 19, 2016 TO: Honorable Mayor John Rey City Council FROM: Anne Marie Gaura, City Manager Tim Holdeman, Public Works Director Tom Cleveland, Airport Manager SUBJECT: Presentation of the DeKalb Taylor Municipal Airport Organizational and Governance Study by Sixel Consulting Group, Inc. Executive Director, Strategy and Development, Jack Penning. Background The City hired Sixel Consulting Group, Inc. in January 2015 to research, report, and provide recommendations on the organizational and governance structures for the DeKalb Taylor Municipal Airport (DTMA). The draft report was completed in June 2015, however, finalization of the report was delayed when the former Public Works Director resigned. Subsequently, the current Public Works Director Tim Holdeman was hired and has been involved in the review of the report. The report (attached) was provided to the Airport Advisory Board in September 2016. Sixel Consulting Group, Inc. Executive Director, Strategy and Development, Jack Penning presented the findings and recommendations of the report to the Airport Advisory Board during a special meeting held on October 4, 2016 (attached). The Conclusions and Recommendations section of the report (p. 44–53) lays out five goals. City staff agree that these goals represent short-term actions that will better position DTMA to take advantage of its assets and potential new business. Goal one is to facilitate better communication between the Airport Manager, Public Works Director, and City Manager by having one-hour meetings at least once each month. These meetings have been taking place since June 2016. Another key goal is to change the structure and purpose of the Airport Advisory Board.
