AAS2019 Values in Anthropology, Values of Anthropology School of Archaeology and Anthropology, Australian National University, 2-5 December 2019

QUICK REFERENCE: 'GETTING THERE'

The Acton Campus of Australian National University is located about a 1 kilometre west of the Canberra central business district. The campus is fairly compact, easy to navigate, and the buildings we’ll be using for the conference are clustered together in one area. The keynote lectures will take place at Coombs Lecture Theatre (honeycomb shaped building on the campus map – see map below). The reception desk, the book exhibit and catering will all be in the RN Robertson Building, while panels and labs will be divided between the RN Robertson Building, Hancock Library and the Science Teaching Building. The AAS AGM and the films will take place at RN Robertson Theatre, attached to the Robertson building.

Those looking for specific instructions connected with their accommodation or arrival, should make use of the Google map on the AAS2019 travel page.

Getting to the conference venue

If you’ve come by air is small and relatively close to the Acton campus and the town centre. There are three modes of public transportation to get to the ANU campus (either the conference venue or the University halls of residences) from the airport. These are: • Taxi • Uber • Bus If you have bulky luggage (as I have recommended packing equally for winter and summer, you’re likely to!) or you worry about getting lost on campus, I highly recommend getting a taxi or an Uber.

Taxis The taxi rank is located centrally on the ground floor of the terminal building, just a short walk from the baggage carousels in the arrivals hall (follow the signs on the ceiling). The taxi rank is fully under cover and the waiting area is indoors. There are three main taxi companies servicing the Canberra Airport area: • Canberra Elite Taxis Phone: 6126 1600 https://canberraelite.com.au/ • ACT Cabs: 6280 0077 http://www.actcabs.com.au/ • Silver Service Canberra: 13 31 00 https://www.silverservicecanberra.com.au/ Price: From $30 + Airport fees (Approx. $5) - to calculate your fare more precisely, check this website https://www.canberraairport.com.au/transport/taxi-fare-calculator/ If there are no taxis in sight, please visit the customer service office and a member of the airport team will organise one for you.

Uber Uber is available from Canberra Airport. Request a pick-up or obtain an estimate from the Uber app. Once you request the Uber, go to the Express Pick-up Waiting Lounge (follow the signs on the ceiling) and your Uber driver will meet you in the lounge. Uber to the city/Acton campus is generally cheaper than a taxi.

By bus from the airport: The Airport Express shuttle bus offers airport-city services daily during peak periods. Tickets can be purchased from the car park customer service office located opposite the bus stop or can be pre-booked at www.royalecoach.com.au or by calling 1300 368 897. The bus stop is located on the kerbside upon exiting the arrivals hall.

Price: $12 one way Pick up point: outside Canberra Airport arrivals hall Drop off point: West Row, Civic. Schedule: http://www.canberraairport.com.au/travellers/parking-transport/buses-and-coaches-2/

Notes: The airport express bus will drop you at West Row street in Civic. From there you can either catch a taxi to the campus or walk. The walk to RN Robertson Building will take about 15 minutes, the straightest way is via University Avenue – see the map below.

Public buses in Canberra are operated by ACTION bus services. The most convenient and direct route from the airport to the campus is to take Route 3 that runs through to the , interchange, Cohen St interchange to Spence Terminus - every 15 minutes through the day (weekdays) and every 30 minutes on weekends. The trip from Canberra airport terminal is about half an hour. You should get off the bus at Barry Dr Before Clunies Ross St and walk for about 12 minutes to the RN Robertson Building.

An official Transport Canberra ticket vending machine is located on the ground floor within Arrivals hall at Canberra Airport. Please view the Route 3 timetable and route map on the Transport Canberra website.

**Please note that public buses do not have storage space for large pieces of luggage** Price: $5 for a single trip (check this website https://www.transport.act.gov.au/tickets-and-myway/fares) Pick up point: Next to hire car and pick up lounge, just outside arrivals See timetable online for Route 3. Service varies according to the time of the day, and the day itself: https://www.transport.act.gov.au/getting-around

Alternatively, you can catch Route 11 from the airport to the city centre, and then walk to your residence by following the same route as the Airport Express option.

If you’re coming by car If you are driving straight to the main venue, use the full address in your phone/GPS device: 46 Sullivans Creek Rd, Acton ACT 2601

Parking The best option to park at the ANU campus would be the car park under Kambri Village. This car park is not managed by the university. On entrance the vehicle registration number is scanned, payment is made prior to exit, the registration number is scanned again and as long as payment has been made the exit gate will open and let the vehicle out. The car park has a $12.00 daily early bird payment for vehicles arriving before 10am. More information can be found here.

If you’ve come by coach or train If you do not wish to catch a taxi or rideshare from the train station to the ANU (approx. 20 minutes), you can take a bus. Cash fares are available on all services. Catch Route 2 from the Wentworth Avenue bus stop opposite and ride 11 stops to Barry Drive – see map above for the walk from the bus stop to the Robertson building. The ANU is located walking distance from both the City Bus Station and the (for all interstate bus services), but if you wanted shorten the walking distance, you can also catch bus number 6 from City Bus Station Platform 5 and ride to Marcus Clarke Station after Farrell Place. The walk to the Robertson building is shown in the map below.

Canberra by bike Canberra is known as the cycling capital of Australia, with its fine network of cycle paths and off-road mountain bike trails. Hire a bike (right in the city centre is http://www.cyclecanberra.com.au) or use your own bike and enjoy the scenic side of Australia’s capital on two wheels.

What to do when you have arrived? If you can, do go first to your accommodation, leave your luggage, have a nap and a shower, then come to the RN Robertson Building (46 Sullivans Creek Rd), at a time when the reception desk is open (starting 13:00 on Monday) or for the workshops. At the reception desk, the student volunteers will check if you have registered and paid your conference fees, and if all is in order, they will hand you your book and badge. You can then go on to enjoy the conference. If the reception desk finds any financial discrepancies in your record, you’ll need to go and find me (Triinu) and give me all your money in cash – I’ll be waiting for you eagerly in RN Robertson Building, in the Peripatus room.

Where is the reception desk and when does it open? Located in the R.N Robertson Building foyer (46 Sullivans Creek Rd), the Reception desk is staffed by volunteers. On arrival at the Reception desk you will be given the conference programme book and your conference badge. If you bought a ticket for the conference dinner when you registered, this will be printed on the badge (a cutlery icon). The desk will be open: Mon: 13:00-18:00; Tue: 08:15-16:00; Wed: 08:30-16:00; Thu: 08:30-14:00. 3

Please note that while the Reception desk only opens at 13:00 on the first conference day, the workshops start already at 10:00 - AAS Native Title in Hancock Library, room 2.24 (122 Sullivans Creek Rd, Acton ACT 2601) and ANSA postgraduate workshop in Jan Anderson (E101A), R.N Robertson building.

Currency exchange is available at banks, hotels and international airports, but you can also simply withdraw money with your card from an ATM.

Making use of your portable device Given that the programme inevitably changes after we go to press, we suggest checking the Errata the conference website: https://aasconf.org/2019/

It might be worth checking the webpage of the panel you're thinking of heading to, in case someone's dropped out or a convenor has rearranged things. If you find the book a little heavy/inconvenient to carry around, we recommend downloading the PDF from the conference home page.

The daily timetable and the campus map follow.

Full information will be in the conference programme that you can collect from the reception desk along with your badge.

Travel safely! Yours, Triinu
