Welcome

The ACT Kendo Renmei invites competitors, officials and supporters to attend the 37th Australian Kendo Championships and Kendo Seminar to be held in Canberra from Friday 6th to Wednesday 11th April 2012.

The members of the ACT Kendo Renmei are keen to make your stay in Canberra as pleasant as possible and will be happy to help you however they can. We look forward to meeting old friends as well as seeing new competitors.

Location

The venue will be the Australian National University Sports and Recreation Centre (building 19) on North Road ANU, see map below. The main hall will be the main venue for the competition. A warm-up area (one full basketball court) will be available adjacent to the competition area during the weekend. It is the same venue where the 2005 Championships and the annual ACT Kendo Championships are held.

About the 2012 Australian Kendo Championships

The Australian Kendo Renmei (AKR) is the official representative body authorised by the International Kendo Federation (FIK). The AKR is responsible for Kendo as well as Seitei Iaido and Seitei Jodo activities in Australia.

The Australian Kendo Championships (AKC) is the official national championships for kendo and is held in a different state/territory each year.

The Taikai (competition) is comprised of both team and individual events for both Kyu and Dan levels as well as a seminar and grading opportunity. The event list includes the following:

Competitor Eligibility

A member whose fees have not been received prior to the 31st of November 2011 is ineligible to participate. All competitors must be an Australian Citizen or a Permanent Resident of Australia.

Competition The 37th Australian Kendo Championships will be conducted on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th April, 2012. A Shinpan briefing shall be conducted from 2:00pm, Friday 6th April. This schedule may change slightly as arrangements are finalised.

Seminar The Annual Australian Kendo Seminar will be conducted on Monday 9th and Tuesday 10th April, 2012. Two visiting Sensei from the AJKF will conduct the seminar. Specific details regarding the sensei will be circulated as soon as they become available.

Grading A Dan grading will be conducted in the morning Wednesday 11th April, 2012. At this stage it is expected that the grading shall be conducted to 4th Dan. Grading applications need to be submitted through your state association on the appropriate AKR application form to the ACTKR, along with competition registrations. Grading application and registration fees will be as per AKR guidelines.

Registration and Fees

State Registrations Seeded registration lists shall be submitted by the state association as per the instructions and spread sheet on the 37th AKC web site:

Each competitor can only enter ONE Individual event.

Registrations need to be submitted by 22nd February 2012. The ACTKR will confirm placements for events with state associations by 29th February. An invoice for the appropriate amount shall be issued at that time. Final payments are required by 21st March 2012.

All registrations must be made through the state and by the nominated representative.

Fees Competition and seminar fees shall be as follows – note these costs do not include grading fees:

Competition + Seminar $190.00 Competition Only $170.00 Seminar Only $90.00 Seminar Only (1 X Day) $50.00 Non Competitor - Competition Only $60.00 Extra Dinner $60.00 Non Competitor + Seminar $150.00

A "Non-competitor" applies to those people who are attending the competition in an official capacity only, for example refereeing.

Final payment for all fees needs to be payed through State Associations by 21st March 2012.

Meals Lunches for Saturday and Sunday, as well as Saturday night dinner are included in the competition fees. Lunches for Monday and Tuesday are included in the seminar fees. Please indicate any special dietary requirements on the state registration spreadsheet or contact the ACTKR.

Championship Welcome Dinner The Championship Welcome Dinner shall be held at the Mercure Canberra, formally Olms Canberra. http://mercurecanberra.com.au/

Please confirm your attendance at the dinner, together with any special dietary requirements and any extra places on the state registration spreadsheet or contact the ACTKR. Extra places for the dinner are available at $60 per head.

Transportation

Car: The ANU Sports and Recreation Centre on North Road is most easily accessed from the Barry Drive entrance to the university. Parking restrictions will be in force on the Tuesday 10th and Wednesday 11th April. There is ample paid parking as they have just opened a second car park next to the venue.

Air: is located about 8km from the venue. A taxi fare is around $25 to the venue (one way). There is no public transport to/from the airport to the city.
