To test the study, Pearson’s product moment correlation, ANOVA and KMO statistic has been used and factor analysis is used to group the factors needed to develop for producing a successful film. The study reveals that the first factor (named convenient factor) is the most important factor for producing a film as well as to grab the attention of the audiences by 92% and competitive advantage by 71%, uniqueness by 81%, supports by 64%, features by 53%, quality of the film by 77% are next consideration consecutively according to the general people perception. The implication of the study is that the film makers and promoters should consider the factors properly for watching more films of the Dhallywood industry in relation to the foreign films especially Hindi, Tamil and English. The government can also take the initiative for the betterment of the industry through proper governance and subsidize if possible. -

Indian Foreign Affairs Journal Vol. 4, No. 3, July - September, 2009, 102-117 ORAL HISTORY Birth of Bangladesh: Down Memory Lane Arundhati Ghose, often acclaimed for espousing wittily India’s nuclear non- proliferation policy, narrates the events associated with an assignment during her early diplomatic career that culminated in the birth of a nation – Bangladesh. Indian Foreign Affairs Journal (IFAJ): Thank you, Ambassador, for agreeing to share your involvement and experiences on such an important event of world history. How do you view the entire episode, which is almost four decades old now? Arundhati Ghose (AG): It was a long time ago, and my memory of that time is a patchwork of incidents and impressions. In my recollection, it was like a wave. There was a lot of popular support in India for Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his fight for the rights of the Bengalis of East Pakistan, fund-raising and so on. It was also a difficult period. The territory of what is now Bangladesh, was undergoing a kind of partition for the third time: the partition of Bengal in 1905, the partition of British India into India and Pakistan and now the partition of Pakistan. Though there are some writings on the last event, I feel that not enough research has been done in India on that. IFAJ: From India’s point of view, would you attribute the successful outcome of this event mainly to the military campaign or to diplomacy, or to the insights of the political leadership? AG: I would say it was all of these. -

Abstract The aim of this thesis is to trace transformations among the Santal of Bangladesh. To scrutinize these transformations, the hegemonic power exercised over the Santal and their struggle to construct a Santal identity are comprehensively examined in this thesis. The research locations were multi-sited and employed qualitative methodology based on fifteen months of ethnographic research in 2014 and 2015 among the Santal, one of the indigenous groups living in the plains of north-west Bangladesh. To speculate over the transitions among the Santal, this thesis investigates the impact of external forces upon them, which includes the epochal events of colonization and decolonization, and profound correlated effects from evangelization or proselytization. The later emergence of the nationalist state of Bangladesh contained a legacy of hegemony allowing the Santal to continue to be dominated. -
Obituary Professor Dr Abul Khair Muhammad Siddiq
Obituary Professor Dr Abul Khair Muhammad Siddiq (1923-2018) It is difficult for one to write an obituary of a person who had been one's teacher, colleague, friend, philosopher and guide. The person was no other than the celebrated gentleman physicist Professor Dr Abul Khair Muhammad Siddiq commonly known as A.K.M.Siddiq who had an eventful long life and had witnessed many developments in Physics in the Curzon Hall starting from the golden days of S. N. Bose of whom he was a student. Prof Siddiq produced dozens of very successful physicists who have been highly placed in different stations in Academic and Administrative Fields. And he always tried to be in touch with them as far as possible. My interactions with Prof Siddiq have been in several fields: as a student, as a colleague and finally as a family friend. I first met him in the mid 60's when I registered myself for Physics Studies in the Dhaka University (1956-1960). I still remember the day when Dr Siddiq entered our class for the first time as a young smart teacher on return from Saskachuan University, Canada where he obtained his Ph.D in Nuclear Physics. We learnt later that his first appointment in life was not as a university lecturer but as an officer first in the Patent Office in Calcutta (now Kolkata) and then after the partition of India in1947 in the Patent Office in Karachi in Pakistan. He did not relish this job as his heart and mind had always been craving for research and teaching. -

DEPARTMENT OF BOTANY University of Dhaka Dhaka-1000 BACHELOR OF SCIENCE WITH HONOURS (BS HONS) AND MS DEGREE PROGRAM IN BOTANY 1. Introduction The Department of Botany was established as Biology Department under the University of Dhaka in 1939 by the active leadership of Professor Panchanan Maheshwari. At that time, the department consisted of Botany and Zoology and the students were enrolled under BSc pass degree program. The students of the then Bengal Agriculture Institute (At present, Sher-e-Bangla Agriculture University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka-1207) were also taught for the BSc pass degree in the same Biology Department. At the beginning, the department was housed in the neighboring Chemistry Department, situated in the Curzon Hall Campus of the University of Dhaka. The department was later on shifted to the present building. In 1948, the first MSc program in Botany was started and the first batch of the students were awarded MSc in 1950. Professor Panchanan Maheshwari, the founder head returned to India in 1949 and then Dr. Majeed Ahmd, Reader of Biology, took the charge. Dr. Ahmad left the department in December. 1951. Professor Girija Prashanna Majumdar, Professor of Botany of Presidency College, Calcutta, India was appointed as the Head of the Department. Professor Majumder started BSc (Hons) course in Botany in 1952. Under this new program, tudents of Botany were first awarded BSc (Hons) degree in 1954. On the Executive Council of Dhaka University at its meeting on 24 April, 1954 decided to establish separate Departments of Botany and Zoology by splitting the Department of Biology. -

Supervisor: Professor Elissa Helms Budapest, Hungary 2014 CEU eTD Collection I Abstract This research is about the discursive battle between radical Bengali nationalists and the Islamist supporters of accused and convicted war criminals in Bangladesh where the gendered issues are used as weapons. In Bangladesh, the online discursive frontier emerged from 2005 as a continuing battle extending from the 1971 Liberation War when the punishment of war criminals and war rapists became one of the central issues of political and public discourse. This online community emerged with debate about identity contest between the Bengali nationalist ‘pro-Liberation War’ and the ‘Islamist’ supporters of the accused war criminals. These online discourses created the background of Shahbag protest 2013 demanding the capital punishment of one convicted criminal and at the time of the protest, the online community played a significant role in that protest. In this research as a past participant of Shahbag protest, I examined this online discourse and there gendered and masculine expression. To do that I problematized the idea of Bengali and/or Muslim women which is related to the identity contest. I examined that, to protest the misogynist propaganda of Islamist fundamentalists in Bangladesh, feminists and women’s organizations are aligning themselves with Bengali nationalism and thus cannot be critical about the gendered notions of nationalism. I therefore, tried to make a feminist scholarly attempt to be critical of the misogynist and gendered notion of both the Islamists and Bengali nationalists to contribute not only a critical examination of masculine nationalist rhetoric, but will also to problematize that developmentalist feminist approach. -

Christiansen ABSTRACT OF DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History in the Graduate School of Northeastern University September, 2012 3 ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the history of East Pakistan/Bangladesh’s student movements in the postcolonial period. The principal argument is that the major student mobilizations of Dhaka University are evidence of an active student engagement with shared symbols and rituals across time and that the campus space itself has served as the linchpin of this movement culture. The category of “student” developed into a distinct political class that was deeply tied to a concept of local place in the campus; however, the idea of “student” as a collective identity also provided a means of ideological engagement with a globally imagined community of “students.” Thus, this manuscript examines the case study of student mobilizations at Dhaka University in various geographic scales, demonstrating the levels of local, national and global as complementary and interdependent components of social movement culture. The project contributes to understandings of Pakistan and Bangladesh’s political and social history in the united and divided period, as well as provides a platform for analyzing the historical relationship between social movements and geography that is informative to a wide range of disciplines. -

Second supervisor Dr. Massimo De Angelis Professor of Political Economy and Development Co-ordinator, Centre for Social Justice and Change School of Social Sciences, UEL ii Abstract The study focuses on rural livelihoods in the northeast region of Bangladesh highlighting two important aspects: household strategies and financial intervention. It uses participatory methods and quantitative evidence to understand the livelihood dynamics and the extent of financial inclusion in livelihood securities. In the broader context of vulnerability, the study focuses particularly on vulnerability to risk related shocks and the strategic uses of livelihood assets in combating such risks. The livelihood strategies include income-generating activities, risk coping strategies and the role of institutions in confronting vulnerability. Households develop coping and adaptation strategies to manage risks using various resources available. Strengthening the capacity often needs resilience building with self-efforts and external interventions in order to nullify the impacts of shocks and hazards. Given the vulnerability context, the study investigates how rural people deal with risks to achieve livelihood securities. Findings show that rural people handle minor risks by self- insurance mechanism including cash on hand and household savings.
