Varied, complex conditions ensured that the famous Rallye Monte-Carlo lived up every bit to its reputation. The season’s difficult opener proved a tense affair from start to finish as the latest-generation World Rally Cars made their first public appearance. More spectacular and more powerful, the new machines thrilled the huge crowds that lined the event’s 17 challenging stages which provided a total competitive distance of more than 380km. As ever, the conditions were rarely consistent from one loop to the next and were even highly varied on individual tests. “We had to cover the whole spectrum of typical Monte Carlo conditions,” said Jacques Morelli, the manager of Michelin’s World Rally Championship programme. “It was cold throughout, and the crews also had to contend with fresh and melting snow, ice and frost, as well as dry and wet asphalt. This year’s Rallye Monte-Carlo lived up its promise and delivered all the ingredients expected of the rally, which in turn made tyre choices extremely difficult. The teams were naturally able to count on their previous experience of the rally, but Michelin’s technicians were once again invaluable allies in the decision-making process.” While only two types of tyre are available for all the other rounds of the WRC (asphalt and gravel), the unique characteristics of the Rallye Monte Carlo necessitate four different solutions to cover all the bases.

Wegen von Zuschauern verstopften Zufahrtswegen wurden die letzten zwei Prüfungen gestrichen. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt hatten sich die beiden ŠKODA Piloten bereits auf Gesamtrang acht nach vorn gekämpft, der Klassensieg war trotz Schnee und Regen ebenfalls längst in trockenen Tüchern. „So etwas habe ich noch nicht erlebt“, schildert ein überglücklicher und überhaupt nicht erschöpfter Sepp Wiegand. Bei der ersten Schlitterpartie über den Col de Turini hatte der ŠKODA Youngster im absolut zuverlässig laufenden Fabia S2000 bei dichtem Schneetreiben sogar ein vor ihm gestartetes WRC auf dem Plateau ein- und überholt. Bei der zweiten Überquerung drehte er – zur Freude der tausenden Fans – an gleicher Stelle ungewollt eine Pirouette. Das war es dann aber auch schon mit den Unartigkeiten des ansonsten äußerst diszipliniert agierenden Wiegand. Der 22-jährige Zwönitzer und sein 28-jähriger Copilot aus Oberhausen harmonierten bei ihrem ersten gemeinsamen Einsatz auf Anhieb hervorragend und absolvierten diese für sie komplett neue Rallye vom ersten bis zum letzten Meter clever und durchdacht. Wie souverän sie dabei den Klassensieg holten, zeigt der Abstand auf die Verfolger: In den drei Prüfungen des heutigen Tages konnten sie ihren Vorsprung auf das nächste WRC 2-Team ohne Risiko auf gut sechs

Although last month’s Rally Finland didn’t produce the ultimate result for our team, Hayden finished just outside the podium places after a strong drive. Thierry and Nicolas continue to lead the Drivers’ championship with an advantage of 21 points, while the Hyundai Shell Mobis World Rally Team heads the Manufacturers’ championship by 26 points so there’s plenty of reason to be positive. I must also congratulate our HMDP crew of Jari and Antti for recording their first WRC2 podium of the year with second in that class. Rallye Deutschland is the first tarmac event on the calendar since Tour de Corse in April. Since then we’ve worked on improving the suspension, especially the dampers, and centre differential mapping with two aims in mind: to achieve more grip for the Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC and find a better balance. This follows feedback from our drivers during Corsica where they reported being hampered by understeer. Our three drivers for Germany – Thierry, Dani and Andreas – have all sampled the changes during development testing and they also got the opportunity to finalise their set-ups during the recent pre-event test, which took place over five days so we could experience the vineyard roads and those within the Baumholder military range, which are very specific to this rally.

Corsica has long been known as a demanding test not only for the drivers, but also for their cars and tyres, and Michelin had three solutions for the event, namely the soft- (S5) and hard-compound (H5) versions of the MICHELIN Pilot Sport, plus the 2017-specification of its ‘Full Wet’ rain tyre, the MICHELIN Pilot Sport FW3. In the end, the weekend’s weather turned out to be clear and dry throughout and Michelin’s partners consequently opted for the ‘hard’ MICHELIN Pilot Sport H5 from start to finish. Its WRC2 runners, meanwhile, benefited from a new hard-compound tyre, the MICHELIN Pilot Sport R H3, which Michelin registered with the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) in January and which features a new tread compound. It builds on the successful career of its predecessor – the MICHELIN Pilot Sport R H2 – but gets up to its ideal working temperature more quickly and delivers enhanced lateral grip.

It is 15 years since a drivers’ title fight of similar magnitude and a compelling season-long battle involving three drivers was finally resolved on the last morning of the season in Australia. It was a similar story in the manufacturers’ championship. All four teams won rallies and three made the long journey Down Under still with an opportunity to claim the crown. Following a similarly enthralling and unpredictable 2017 cam- paign, when new-era World Rally Cars headlined a raft of major changes to the championship, it is clear our sport is in the midst of an unforgettable period in its history. Away from the close competition, the WRC has grown in stature.
