As a freelance historian for much of my career, no institutional obligation has obliged me to be one of the publish or perish brigade, who are rushed into print only to repent at leisure. My engagement with the Anzac legend began in infancy when a favourite Liberal voting uncle handed me a venerable comic strip apology for the Gallipoli landing. It taught me that my people had been engaged in things larger than themselves. It was in effect my Iliad. This was in the 1960s, when Australia and indeed my relations were split by the War in Vietnam. My great grandparents had been Methodist opponents of the Boer War. My Labor voting grandmother and father opposed Australia’s involvement in Vietnam, and were very concerned for a conscripted cousin who did a tour of duty there. At the age of eight I wanted to march in the Moratorium demonstration in Burnie, Tasmania, using the credibility of my Cub Scout uniform. Dad talked me out of it, fearing political surveillance and damage to my future job prospects; as Lenny Bruce said around then, if you’re not paranoid, you’re not paying attention. -

Preface Preface The intersections of science and law occur from crime scene to crime lab to criminal prosecution and defense. Although detectives, forensic scientists, and attorneys may have different vocabularies and perspectives, from a cognitive perspective, they share a way of thinking that is essential to scientific knowledge. A good detective, a well-trained forensic analyst, and a seasoned attorney all exhibit “what-if” thinking. This kind of thinking in hypotheticals keeps a detective open-minded: it prevents a detective from ignoring or not collecting data that may result in exculpatory evidence. -

We received over 400 entries across the Advertising, Photography, Journalism and Newspaper categories. The judges were united in compliments about the professionalism and vital contribution our publications are making to our regional communities. It was unfortunate we were unable to fully celebrate our achievements with our highlight presentation night dinner this year, but we have been able to at least recognise the success of our teams and individual winners from the Southern Regions on Queensland, with a presentation luncheon at Toowoomba on Friday, November 6. Congratulations to all who entered, and deserving acknowledgment for the winners, place-getters and highly commended recipients. Maybe we can have an extra celebration at next year’s Awards dinner scheduled to be held at Mercure Brisbane Hotel on May 28.
